1 B120 Pentateuch (3 Credit hours) Prerequisite: B110 Introduction to the Old Testament September 5-9, 2016 Module A Mon-Fri: 9am-4pm Christopher R. Lortie, Ph.D. (cand.) lortiecr@gmail.com Course Description A study of the Pentateuch that will provide orientation to the original context of the first five books of the Old Testament, as well as the influence these works had in the shaping of the Old Testament and New Testament and the importance it still have in our current context. This course will address the following competencies: Biblically / Theologically Sound Skilled Communicator Contextually Aware Relation to Horizon s Mission The Pentateuch is the beginning point of the unfolding story of God working in and through his creation. Wrestling with the text and interacting with the lives of the Patriarchs, the people of Israel, and Moses and engaging with how they lived in relationship with God guides us as we wrestle in our context with what it means to live out our relationship with God in Christian life and ministry. Learning Outcomes Cognitive: (all assignments) Orient the Pentateuch within the culture of the ancient Near East (assignment 2) Explore the theological trajectory of the Pentateuch (assignment 2) Gain new insights into the character of God with specific attention to His revelation in the Pentateuch (all assignments) Affective: Be enriched by the devotional importance of the Pentateuch (assignment 3) Engage with the manner God interacts with his people in Pentateuch (all assignments)

2 Conative: Apply the theological witness of the Pentateuch to contemporary issues (assignments 2 & 3) Articulate the importance of the Pentateuch in the rest of the Old Testament and also the New Testament (assignment 3) Required Textbooks Wenham, Gordon J. Course Outline: Monday Orientation; OT Exegesis; History of Israel; Genesis 1-36 Tuesday Genesis 37-50; Exodus Wednesday Leviticus; Numbers Thursday Deuteronomy Friday Authorship and Composition; Theology; Pentateuch in OT and NT Course Assignments and Evaluation 1. In Wenham s textbook there are opportunities to engage with the biblical text by Digging Deeper and also to Think About important aspects of the Pentateuch. Each day students will be assigned a topic and expected to prepare about 200 words on the topic for discussion in class the next day. (4 submission) 10% Due: These will be collected each day after the discussion. 2. One major writing project that will be completed in stages throughout the term. In consultation with the professor students must select one passage from the Pentateuch and work through that passage using various exegetical tools. Guidelines will be provided in class and available on Populi (consult also Scott and Hays and Stuart). After the

3 completion of each section the student must submit the work for evaluation and feedback. The final stage will be putting all the work into a final submission. 60% Stage 1: Literary Study (Due Saturday, September 24, 2016) Stage 2: Historical Context and Background (Due Saturday, October 1, 2016) Stage 3: Secondary Sources (Due Saturday, October 8, 2016) Stage 4: Theology and Application in a Final Submission (Due Saturday, October 15, 2016) 3. A final take-home exam based upon course reading material and classroom discussion. The focus of the exam will be the theology of the Pentateuch as a whole and its value for today. The final exam will be made available on Populi Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 12:00pm. 30% Due: Friday, October 21, 2016 General Guidelines for Submission Papers must be typed in Times New Roman; 12pt; double spaced Submission must be uploaded to Populi in pdf format by 11:59pm on the assigned date. Evaluation for Papers Each paper will be considered in three categories: presentation, argumentation, and content. Assessment for Course Students will be assessed on whether they are meeting the necessary competency: 1 = Not Yet Meeting Competency 2 = Beginning to Meet Competency 3 = Meeting Competency 4 = Exceeding Competency Late Policy: Overdue assignments incur the following penalties: 1-3 days late 10% penalty 4-6 days late 20% penalty After 6 days: an automatic F Sundays and statutory holidays are not counted in assessing penalties for late submission.

4 Academic Honesty Horizon uses the University of Saskatchewan definition of plagiarism described as the presentation of work or idea of another in such a way as to give others the impression that it is the work or idea of the presenter. Adequate attribution is required. What is essential is that another person have no doubt which words are research results are the student s and which are drawn from other sources (Office of the University Secretary, 2012).
