Name A Plot Summary External Vs Internal Conflict by Isaac Bashevis FYI-Bashevis won a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1978 Mr. Zindman s Class
What is a conflict? A conflict is a struggle between two opposing forces. I do not care what you say, I m never going back to the Krusty Krab! Squidward, I told you to go out and get a job now! a job!
Here is an example of an external and internal conflict. In the Lion King, the external conflict is Simba has to fight scar to regain his place at pride rock. The internal conflict is him having to face his past because he thinks it's his fault his father died. I have to take back Pride Rock from Scar, but how can I do that if I caused my father s death? I have an external and internal conflict!

Story Plot Diagram Zlaeth The Goat Learning Objective Describe the internal and external conflicts in a fictional story or drama and determine how the character develops or changes in response to that conflict. I Can Statements I can identify and explain the external and internal conflicts from a fictional story. Just before Hanukkah- Winter Exposition/Setting Setting: A small village in the past. The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. The holiday implies it is Winter. Reuven, needs money to buy presents for the Hanukkah. The peasants complained a poor harvest of grain, because of the unusual dry weather. This means its going to be a difficult Winter. Reuven, the furrier, tells his son Aaron to sell their beloved goat, Zlaeth to Feivel the butcher for money. Internal Conflict: Aaron has to sell their beloved goat to the butcher. Aaron loves the goat because Zlaeth provided milk and love for years. Arron wants to keep Zlaeth! Internal Conflict is a conflict that takes place in the character s mind External Conflict is a struggle between a character and an outside force. Personification is when something nonhuman is given human characteristics. Aaron takes Zlaeth to the butcher Rising Action Aaron brought Zlaeth on the road to town. Personification is evidenced, page 48,line 12- Zlaeth says, where are you taking me? In Lines Why are we out in such a storm? Can a goat talk? Suddenly the weather changes. The snow intensifies! Aaron is worried and needs to seek shelter from the blizzard. Aaron seeks shelter in a haystack Climax Aaron admits that Zlaeth and he are in serious danger and needs to find shelter. External Conflict: How can Aaron and Zlaeth survive the deadly snow storm? Aaron discovers a haystack and builds a shelter inside the haystack to survive the mighty blizzard. Zlaeth provides milk for them both. Arron shares his cheese with Zlaeth. How is the discovery of the haystack a temporary resolution? Zlaeth is saved for the moment. Arron still needs to take him to the butcher to please his father. I can explain the external and internal conflict from a story. Pearson, Common Core Literature Textbook, Page 46 Aaron never parts with Zlaeth Falling Action and Resolution On the fourth day, the external conflict is solved! The blizzard ends Aaron decides to settle his internal conflict, face his father, and not sell Zlaeth! The family decides never to sell Zlaeth again when the see Aaron and Zlaeth. They were worried about them missing. The internal conflict is resolved! Central Idea-What is the author telling us in the story? We need each other! Theme-You never know what you have until you lose it!
1. What is the exposition in the story? Hint: who, where, when, and conflict? 2. How did the dynamic character solve the conflict? 3. What is the central idea of the story, Zlaeth The Goat? 4. What is the external conflict in the story. 5. What is the internal conflict in the story? 6. Explain the resolution in the story. 7. Explain the theme in the story?
