1 The World Goes On I. Introduction and review A. In our last study we considered the human government which God set up at the start of Chapter Nine 1. He established capital punishment 2. We were able to come to understand, to some extent, the mystery of blood 1. We saw that it is much more than just a bodily fluid 2. But that blood is something that God considers to be equivalent to life and that he holds life in very high regard a. You can tell when a nation or country is godless for their value of human life will be very low C. Now we have to look at a very perplexing passage which many interpreters believe holds great meaning II. Genesis 9:18-19, Times and heritage A. In Verses should the translation be was or became 1. Noah was 500 years old when he first had a child 2. No children were born to the three sons of Noah until after they left the ark 3. That means that Noah didn t have any children until after God told him about the extent of the iniquity on the earth and the coming judgment of the flood B. What was Noah? 1. He was in fact a prophet 2. In the NT God's ambassador, and the herald or proclaimer of the divine word. 3. The understanding that Noah was a prophet will be important to understanding a subsequent passage we will consider. III. Genesis 9:20-27 The drunkenness of Noah A. Did Noah become intoxicated? Page 3 of 7

4 1. Word used rk;v' shakar {shaw-kar'} 2. It means to become drunk or inebriated 3. There can be no question as to what happened. B. Is drunkenness wrong? 1. The Scripture clearly indicates that it is, see: a. Isa. 5:11-12, 22 b. Rom. 13:13 c. I Cor. 6:9 d. Gal. 5:19 e. Eph 5:18 f. I Thess. 5:6 2. So did Noah go through all that he did and at the end go on a long drunk? C. Is that the kind of man Noah was? 1. There is no evidence of that 2. Therefore is there any other explanation? 3. It was not just a drunk after the ark, it took time to plant, grow, cultivate a vineyard a. It takes about three years before a vineyard will produce grapes of sufficient quality and quantity to make wine 4. If this was sin why didn t God do something or at least say something a. 5 D. Noah was used to a different world then the one he now lived in 1. The old world had a waterous canopy surrounding it 2. The water molecules that surrounded the earth would have absorbed most short-wave radiation [actinic radiation] 3. This type of radiation increases the decomposition rate of organic material 4. The atmospheric pressure went from 2.18 to one 5. Noah and his sons it is believed were living on the northern slopes of the mountains of Arrat 6. Would these factors have any effect on this situation? a. Due to the increase in short wave radiation the fermentation process would have significantly increased b. In addition, the change of air pressure would have also caused the fermentation process to occur at a faster rate than pre-flood fermentation c. The lowered atmospheric pressure, no canopy and living on higher altitude would increase the rate of the inebriation process, that is you get drunk faster E. As a result I have concluded that this was a mistake Noah made and not sin 1. Consider if you were to drink a glass of wine with a nice dinner or a beer while watching a ball game, but afterward became intoxicated 2. If you tried to explain it who would believe you only had one 3. 6 [4:7] F. But what about Ham 1. What did he do? 2. We really don t specifically know 3. There are all kinds of explanations a. Homosexual acts b. Disrespect for his father c. Public ridicule of his father 4. Whatever he did, it was considered grievous G. Noah s response 1. This is not a curse that means something will happen to someone or that that person will do something as result of the curser s power 2. Instead this appears to me to be a prophecy concerning Ham and his son Canaan a. It appears that Canaan was Ham s fourth son [See 10:6 ] 3. What didn t happen the origin of the black race as punishment 4. What did happen: a. Genesis 10:6 6 The sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan. b.
