The people have been redeemed from Egypt through faith and under sacrificial blood Now they ve come to Mt. Sinai (see Ex 3:12) Where God is going to formalize the terms, principles and blessings that will characterize their ongoing relationship The Mosaic Covenant The Law Then He ll ask them for their commitment EXCURSUS ON THE LAW What Is It? The Mosaic Covenant It s a standard of godliness It governs both religious and civil life Living according to it allows the Israelites to fully appropriate God s inheritance and enjoy its blessings It will serve as the nation s constitution It s an expression of God s love and grace It was (and is) good (see Romans 7) It reveals God s holy character It reveals His standard for godly fellowship It s an expression of His will for sanctification (growth in holiness), not for salvation The Tenses of Holiness WITH A VIEW TO... Abrahamic Covenant Palestinian Davidic New Covenant Covenant Covenant Land Seed Blessing Mosaic Covenant What Are Its Blessings? IF Israel will walk in obedience to God s covenant THEN Israel will enjoy all the freedom and fullness of her unique relationship with God (Ex 19:5) He ll make them His unique representatives (mediators) in the world (Ex 19:6a) And they ll live out uniquely fulfilling and holy lives as His adopted heirs (Ex 19:6ff; Ge 15)
2 True freedom and fulfillment aren t found through living any way you want they re only found through obeying God s Word Overall Outline For Ex Moses and Joshua receive the covenant inscribed on stone tablets (24:12-18) The Covenant is Offered YHWH announces the covenant (3-6) The people prepare themselves to assemble before YHWH (7-25) Concepts being taught at the mountain are Holiness Purity Separation from defilement or uncleanness Mediation The Form of the Covenant Its General Stipulations Based on Who YHWH is and what He s done in bringing His people out of Egypt His 10 commandments, not 10 suggestions! Sinai Adoption/heirs He s entered into a special, formal covenant relationship with those He redeemed from Egypt It was ratified by blood on the altar It was celebrated by a covenant meal It requires their obedience for blessing APPLICATION: True freedom and fulfillment aren t found through living any way you want they re only found through obeying God s Word Freedoms For The Obedient Freedom of a clear conscience before God and men (Heb 10; Rom 13) Freedom of a clear life purpose (John 17:3) Freedom to know that our ordinary lives will serve as a powerful witness to those who don t believe (1 Pet 2:12, 15-17) Freedom of knowing we ll have answered prayer (Ps 66:18-20; 1 Pet 3:7) Freedom From Having to strive to achieve your own success Having to strive to establish your own significance Having to strive to provide for your own security How About You? Is there somewhere you re not experiencing true freedom? Success, significance, security? Matters of conscience? Is there somewhere you re not experiencing true fulfillment? Purposelessness?
