RSS10 World Religions 2: Christianity OR Judaism OR Islam: The Way of Submission General Comments There were slightly fewer entries for this paper than in previous years. As in previous years, the vast majority of entries were for Islam. There were some exceptional papers, showing that many students had been well-prepared for the exam. There are still some students who do not read the whole question, particularly at AO2. Where there were two parts to the question, like outline and examine, the balance between the two parts was often towards the outline. This meant that students failed to reach the higher levels on those questions, as the examine element allows students to achieve the higher levels. Section A: Christianity Question 1 Some beliefs about God: Trinity and salvation 01 This was the most popular question in the Christianity section. There were some excellent responses with students examining both parts of the question, using some scholarly references and relevant examples. Weaker responses either only tackled one part of the question or gave very descriptive answers that did not unpack the ideas, as is required by the examine trigger. 02 There were many good answers with students arguing both sides of the view. However, some answers did not focus on the full question and missed out the word vitally thereby preventing them from reaching the higher levels. Question 2 Christian scriptures: nature and purpose 03 This was the least popular Christianity question, but there were some exceptional answers. Overall this was not a strong question for many students. Other answers were often very unbalanced with almost the whole answer being about gospels and very little about Jewish law, or the sections on Jewish law very descriptive, mentioning the 10 commandments but little else. 04 Again, there were not many strong responses to this question. Many answers compared the importance of the Old and New Testaments but did not consider the question, which was about different types of material found in the scriptures. 3of 7

Question 3 Aspects of Christian worship 05 There were good answers to this question but many did not answer the whole question and wrote about the role of the laity in general rather than in worship. These answers got some marks because they considered worship, but only as part of the answer. There were some good comparisons made between High and Low church Christians. 06 Again, those students who had ignored the word worship in 05, tended to do the same in 06. This made it difficult for them to achieve the higher levels. However, good responses focused upon the role of the clergy in Christian worship today. Question 4 A Christian way of life; initiation, marriage and death 07 Many of these answers were excellent and focused on the explain element. However, some answers became long descriptions of Christian wedding ceremonies, with students seeming to assume that all the practices associated with Christian marriage were part of the wedding, rather than on-going in their married life. The best answers used their outline of practices to exemplify the beliefs about marriage. 08 Some students looked at modern ideas of marriage and secularisation, making interesting balanced answers. The majority of answers to this question, however, became a general discussion about heterosexual vs. gay marriage with little or no specific connection to Christianity. Section B: Judaism Question 5 God and his people 09 This question was generally well-answered, with most students focusing on the Holocaust as the main challenge to traditional ideas about God. A significant number of students read this question as Challenges to Judaism and discussed assimilation and the development of the Reform movement as challenges. Most answers talked about the challenge from science, but better answers connected science to the question, whereas weaker answers just talked about the challenge to the existence of God from science, not to the ideas about God. 10 Some weaker responses could not identify the difference between ideas about God in the past and the present day. Many continued from Question 09 and discussed the relevance of Judaism now and in the past, with a lot of descriptive information about Jewish practices in Eastern Europe in the past. The best answers defined the ideas about God and used that to discuss their relevance. 4of 7

Question 6 Scripture 11 This was not a popular question. Those that answered this question did so well, and demonstrated good knowledge and understanding of the nature of the Talmud, including when the various sections were added as well as its use in Jewish life. Most considered whether the Talmud was divine in nature. 12 Most answers to this question were balanced with use of examples to demonstrate whether there was a need for the Talmud. Some students looked at the word Torah as encompassing both written and oral law and produced strong arguments from this perspective. Question 7 Aspects of worship and festivals: Shabbat, Yom Kippur and Pesach 13 This was a popular question. The outline element was well done with most students showing that they understood the practices. Some students interpreted the fact that Yom Kippur is described as the Sabbath of Sabbaths to mean that Yom Kippur is always on a Saturday, which skewed their answers as they included Shabbat practices. Some students outlined prayers said in different services, but chose to mention those prayers which are in every service, like the Shema or the Amidah, rather than those which are specific to Yom Kippur. The explanation part of the question was less well done with many students ignoring the second part of the question. Those that did discuss beliefs did not always relate them to the practices. Very few discussed repentance and forgiveness as central beliefs connected to the festival. 14 Those students who had not mentioned forgiveness or repentance in Question 13 struggled with this question. Some gave interesting answers which looked at increasing lack of belief in God, so why should Jews seek forgiveness from a God they do not believe in. Most argued that attendance at Yom Kippur services showed that the statement was not right. Question 8 Styles of Judaism: Orthodox and Reform beliefs and practices 15 Very few students attempted this question. Those that did demonstrated that they knew what the Orthodox believe about the Temple and were able to give textual examples to support their knowledge. A few tried to include Reform views, which was not relevant to this question. 16 Most students answered this question thoroughly, contrasting Orthodox views with those of other Jews. 5of 7

Section C: Islam Question 9 The Qur an 17 This was a very popular question and was completed well in most cases. Some students did not discuss both uses of the Qur an in enough detail. There were answers that veered away from the question and gave a lot of description about wudhu, which was not part of this question. 18 This question was well-answered with most students looking at the need for the Hadith and Sunnah as well as the Qur an. Question 10 The Five Pillars 19 This was also a popular question, but many students struggled with the concept of pillar and a significant number of answers became a description of each of the 5 pillars with minimal explanation or even reference to the concept of pillar. Some answers included concept implicitly which was credited, but were unable to reach the higher levels. It was clear that many schools / colleges had not taught the concept of pillar directly, even though it is on the Specification. 20 This question had better responses, in that the opposing argument could be presented without having discussed the 'concept' of pillar. Many answers were unbalanced but included two different viewpoints. Question 11 The doctrine of God 21 This was not as popular as the other questions. Most answers were really thorough with examples and evidence supporting the points made. Answers typically discussed different kinds of shirk and the implications of those types of shirk for Muslims. 22 This was also well-answered. Those students who had already discussed different types of shirk were able to use that to compare and contrast which types might be forgiven or might be unforgivable. Even those who had produced weaker answers to Question 21 were able to give reasoned arguments in this question. Question 12 Key beliefs 23 The nature of prophets was usually well-outlined however, the explanation of how belief in prophets affects Muslim life was often only one paragraph at the end of the answer. This prevented many students from reaching the higher levels. 6of 7

24 There were some good answers to this question but many did not consider the word vital and answered whether belief in prophets was important instead. The best answers considered the whole question. Mark Ranges and Award of Grades Grade boundaries and cumulative percentage grades are available on the Results Statistics page of the AQA Website.
