2 The People enter in silence and may sit quietly in Meditation or kneel in Prayer Performance Notes: The Taizé Chants are intended to be sung over and over again as mantra-like prayer. Persons may join in or simply listen as one prefers. Leader: Loving God, the comfort of all who sorrow, the strength of all who suffer: accept our prayers, and to those who seek comfort in this night of sorrow, grant the power of your grace, that the weak may be strengthened, sickness turned to health, the dying made whole, and our sorrow at the death of your beloved Son be turned into joy; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Chant No. 1 The People join as desired, standing or Wait for the Lord whose day is near. Wait for the Lord; be strong take heart. Lesson 1 - from Genesis 1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." So God separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And it was good. And there were lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the

Chant No. 2 The People join as desired, standing or Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom Lesson 2 - from Job Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a human being, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? "Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped'? Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting

4 you are God. You turn us back to dust, and say, "Turn back, you mortals." For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night. You sweep them away; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning; in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. For we are consumed by your anger; by your wrath we are overwhelmed. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. For all our days pass away under your wrath; our years come to an end like a sigh. The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong; even then their span is only toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. Who considers the power of your anger? Let your work be manifest to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands-- O prosper the work of our hands! Lesson 4 - from Ecclesiastes For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. What gain have the workers from their toil? I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with. He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; moreover, it is God's gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil. I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor

5 anything taken from it; God has done this, so that all should stand in awe before him. God The Lord s Prayer From the New Zealand Book of Common Prayer The People join Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, pain-bearer, Life-giver, source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, loving God, in whom is heaven: The hallowing of your name echo through the universe. The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world. Your heavenly will be done by all created beings. Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and test, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. 6 The People Pray Leader: O God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom you chose us, before the foundation of the world, and destined us in love to be your own: help us to pray for all your children. For the life of the world; that your peace may be known and may prevail: Lord, hear us. For all who suffer injury, death or loss; that they may know the hope to which you call us: Lord, hear us. For all who exercise rule and authority; that they may acknowledge your power: Lord, hear us. For the Church which is Christ's body; that it may live for the praise of your glory: Lord, hear us. For the special needs and concerns of those here present: The People are invited to pray quietly or aloud. Individuals are invited to come forward and pray at the Cross of Thorns if desired. Silence for intercessions Lord, hear us. which we offer in his name for the world you have created and redeemed; through him in whom you have set forth the mystery of your will, to unite all things in heaven and on earth, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done.
