1 Deuteronomy 34:1-12 Seeing the Promised Land February 7, the curtain rises on Deuteronomy 34 -Moses has reached the end of his journey -it s been forty years since he led God s people out of slavery Egypt and brought them to this place -now he climbs Mt. Nebo, across the Jordan from Jericho -from this vantage point, God shows him the Promised Land from one end to the other as it stretches out in all its glorious splendour -Deuteronomy 8 describes it this way: The LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. -it s been a long and difficult journey and Moses won t share this land with the people he has led all these years -Moses, you see, is at journey s end he is at life s end, he is ready for a blessed eternity -in his earthly life he had given up so much -Hebrews 11 reminds us of all the things that could have been:
By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. -Moses had sacrificed all the treasures of Egypt -he could have lived the life of a prince in Egypt, but instead, he chose to be mistreated along with the people of God -and Hebrews 11 tells us why he was looking ahead to his reward -that reward wasn t a seaside villa, or a mountain chalet -Moses was waiting for an even better reward -he knew that his ultimate citizenship was in heaven -he knew that he and the people of Israel were part of God s great plan to send a Messiah, the seed of the woman, the offspring of Abraham, who would be the sacrifice for sin and bring God s people home -Moses knew all those promises after all he wrote them, remember? -now, from the top of Mt. Nebo, Moses could see something even more remarkable that the Promised Land -he could see this One who was thus far invisible -Moses was like Abraham before him... Jesus says, Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad -Moses saw it too -there would one day be a true Passover Lamb whose blood would save God s people from death 2
3 -there would one day be a true Lamb of God who would carry away the sins of the world -today s Gospel comes from Luke 9 -here we are transported to the top of another mountain -it s called the Mount of Transfiguration -from the top of that mountain, you can see a long, long way -if you look west, you can see all the way back hundreds of miles and hundreds of years -you can see all the way back to the days of slavery in Egypt -you can see God s rescue plan unfold -you can see the Red Sea part and Pharaoh s army perish -you can see 40 years of travel through the wilderness -and you can see the road that God s people travelled to the Promised Land -if you look to the south, you can see the road that lies ahead for Jesus and his disciples -you can see all the way to Calvary and the cross -you can see the empty tomb -if you look closely enough, you can see eternity from here -back there in Deuteronomy 34 as Moses approached the end of his earthly life, you can almost hear him quote from St. Paul, something St. Paul hadn t written yet -can t you just picture Moses saying these words: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing
4 -for Moses, the journey started a long way back -it was 120 years ago, in a land far away -Moses was still a baby when God used water to save him -in those days, Pharaoh and his officials were worried because their slave nation, the Israelites, were having babies at an alarming rate - Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us They are going to outnumber us and we will lose control of them. They will help our enemies to be victorious over us -they tried working them harder -they told the midwives to murder the baby boys, but they would not -finally Pharaoh issued a decree that all the male babies born to the Israelites be thrown in the river to drown -Moses mother tried to hide him as long as possible, and when she no longer could, she put him in a basket, coated with pitch and floated him in the river -his older sister was sent to watch what would happen to him -that basket, coated in tar was mini-version of Noah s ark, -it would be Moses personal ship of salvation -Pharaoh s own daughter soon found him in the river -she knew it was one of the Hebrew babies, but she adopted him as her son and took him home to the palace -and so it turned out that the water that the devil planned to use to kill him was used by God to save his life and gave him a new future
-80 years later, God used water again to save all of Israel -they were all baptized into Moses in the Red Sea -and God used the same water to destroy Pharaoh and his hordes and to save his people and put them on the road to the Promised Land -today, we come to another miracle deliverance at the other end of the spectrum, -little Grace Parker is just starting out on her journey -she can t see much from her crib -from her car seat, she can t hardly see out the windows -with her snow-suit on, all you can see is her eyes -today God used water to save her too -in the waters of baptism, her old sinful nature drowns and dies -the Father claims her as his own dear child -in the power of the Holy Spirit the devil is cast out -in the power of Jesus death and resurrection she is clothed in white -from this day on the perfect and holy life of Christ covers her -today she is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit -now, as a child of God and an heir of heaven, she now possesses the same blessed destiny that Moses had -she has been rescued from death -her sins are forgiven -she has a future and an enduring hope -whatever this life and this world might bring her way, she can look ahead to her eternal, heavenly reward 5
6 -every baptized child of God is given that blessing -Peter says that According to his great mercy, God has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. -we don t know where Grace s life s journey may take her -we know that she will face life s challenges and life s storms -but we know that God is faithful, and he who has begun this good work in her will bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ -we know that God will not allow her to be tempted beyond her strength -we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him -we know that the Spirit will intercede for her with sighs that words cannot express -as we gather in the Lord s house today we see life at both ends -with little Grace, we look in one direction and see the beginning of life with all its potential and all of its promises -with Moses, we look in the other direction and see the end of his life with all its memories -but there s more we see an unbroken record of God s faithfulness -God has kept his promises -that is true always and at every stage of life
7 -we ve had a glimpse of the beginning with Grace -we ve had a look at the end with Moses -now I want to take you to the middle -as Jesus brings his disciples to the Mount of Transfiguration, he is at the midpoint of his journey to the cross -should we be surprised at who is there with him? -Moses is there he s the one who could see him who is invisible -he could see this day from afar -most important, Moses could see that Jesus would be the one to finish what Moses had started but had been unable to finish -do you know why Moses didn t go into the Promised Land? -the only two adults that left Egypt and went all the way were Joshua and Caleb -why not Moses? -surely he earned it, he deserved it -actually he didn t earn it he didn t deserve it -he was a sinner like the rest of us, and he let his sin give way to an angry outburst against God -the people were complaining there was no water and God said to Moses, talk to the rock and it will give forth water -but Moses didn t talk to the rock -in his anger he shouted at the people, Here, I will give you water, and he struck the rock -and he stole the glory of God for himself
-and God said, I won t let you go into my Promised Land -if you lead my people across the Jordan, they will give you the glory and the praise -and that would not be a good thing, for them or for you -Moses sins were forgiven, but it was time for him to go home -and God took him home -God had someone else in mind to be the Saviour of the world -up until now, Jesus and his disciples have been on an uphill journey -little by little the twelve are learning who Jesus really is -he can calm storms and cast out demons -he can feed the hungry and heal the sick and turn water into wine -but much more Jesus introduces the year of the Lord s favour -he is the light of the world -he is the Word made flesh -he is the Good Shepherd -he is the bread of Life -he is the Seed of the woman, the offspring of Abraham -he is the I am that Moses met at the burning bush in Exodus 3 -by faith, Moses knew all that -he could see the invisible one -now Peter has seen it too -with the eyes of faith he had been bold to confess, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God, -so now, on this mountain, Jesus and his disciples have reached the high point of their journey 8
9 -Jesus was transfigured before them and they saw Jesus glory revealed -what was even more important was what they heard that day -they heard the voice of the Father, This is my Son, whom I have chosen, listen to him -and they got to sit in for a few moments and listen to a conversation between Jesus and Moses and Elijah -Luke tells us that they were talking about Jesus impending exodus at Jerusalem -how Jesus was the Word made Flesh who had come to finish what Moses had started -to die for the sins of the world -and to bring God s people home -Moses couldn t do it -Elijah couldn t do it -Jesus did -he did it with a blood soaked cross -he did it with an empty tomb -he did it with his body and blood, given and shed on the cross -he did it with a splash of water in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
