Introduction Thank you for volunteering to facilitate a group. In this Guide you will find some suggested weekly session agendas with questions (some taken from the reconnect Workbook) for your large- and small-group discussions. These are just suggested agendas, so feel free to add your personal touch and don t be afraid to ask your group for feedback as well. Included in some of the agendas you will find additional suggestions you may wish to use to help advance the class s study and participation. Your six-week group sessions will be divided up as follows: Week 1 Longing for Connection Week 2 Prayers: Our Connection With God s Power Week 3 Presence: Our Connection With God s People Week 4 Gifts: Our Connection to God s Generosity Week 5 Service: Our Connection to God s Transformation Week 6 Commitment: Making the Connections Each group session will focus on reinforcing the readings in the Workbook and class members thoughts and reflections on the week s themes. Each week there is also an optional video from Hyde Park United Methodist to play for the class, or your church may choose to create its own video. The ebb and flow of the group will help dictate what works best for your group in allocating your session time for big-group discussion versus smallgroup breakout discussions. While it might seem your group may wish not to break up into smaller groups we would encourage you to try it. Small groups of three (no more than four) provide a real, personal opportunity for members to open up in a more protected environment versus sharing their personal thoughts in front of the entire group. You may choose one of the following format options, or adapt these as you wish to meet the schedule and needs of your particular group. (Note: The times indicated are merely estimates. You may move at a faster or slower pace, making adjustments as necessary to stay on schedule.) Basic Option: 60 minutes Welcome and Opening Prayer Video* Group Discussion Breakout Small-Group Discussion Wrap Up, Prayer Requests, and Closing Prayer 5 minutes 5 minutes 25 minutes 15 minutes 10 minutes Extended Option: 90 minutes Welcome and Opening Prayer Video* Group Discussion Break Breakout Small-Group Discussion Wrap Up, Prayer Requests, and Closing Prayer 5 minutes 5 minutes 30 minutes 10 minutes 30 minutes 10 minutes
Again, this is your class, so we only offer this Guide as a support aid to guide you. Thank you for your service and blessings to you in helping your class walk the path to a more reconnected spiritual-guided life. *NOTE: You can access videos created by Hyde Park United Methodist at Cokesbury.com (click on the Downloads Store tab and search Reconnect ). Each of the six video segments run about 3 minutes in length: Week 1: Introduction An overview from Hyde Park Pastor James Harnish on the importance of the program and what a congregation can expect. Week 2: Prayers, Week 3: Presence, Week 4: Gifts, and Week 5: Service Hyde Park members share their experiences with the practices of prayers, presence, gifts, and service. Week 6: Closing Pastor James Harnish reiterates the importance of committing to prayers, presence, gifts, and service. However, your team may choose to film your own church members sharing their experiences as Hyde Park did. Video, whether the online segments from Hyde Park members or your own video, is not necessary but is a nice addition.
Week 1 Longing for Connection SESSION 1 AGENDA (Suggested) Welcome and Opening Prayer Before class begins, choose a sidebar quote from the Workbook readings in Week 1, and write it on a board or chart. Welcome participants. Open the meeting in prayer. Introductions of Leader(s) and Participants (For example, each could share a 30-second bio.) Possible Ice Breaker: Start with the group going around the room and answering the question: What are you looking for in this group? (Workbook p. 18, Question #2) Video Optional: Show Video for Week 1 Group Discussion Questions for Discussion: 1. In what ways do you ever feel cut off from the rest of the world? 2. Do you feel like people in our world are searching for a connection? Why? 3. Could it be a connection to God they re subconsciously seeking and are unaware of? Read Acts 1: What do you observe in this passage? 5. How do you think the disciples felt between the time of Jesus ascension and the day of Pentecost? 6. What gets in the way of your connection with others? With God? (Workbook p. 16, Question #3) The Bible says that our searching for a connection with God is the result of God s insatiable desire to connect with us. Those first followers of Jesus were longing for the kind of connection with God that they shared when Jesus was among them. 7. Why do we need Christian community? Why isn t it enough to show up in worship on Sunday and skip out, grabbing a donut hole for the road? (Workbook p. 18, Question #1) Read John 14: How does this passage describe a connection between people and God? 9. Do we feel the Holy Spirit in our daily lives or do we reserve that connection just for church? (Workbook p. 22, Question #1)
10. When Judas asks why Jesus would show himself to the disciples and not the world, Jesus doesn t answer directly. Think of a time that you didn t feel as if God answered you directly. How did that impact your relationship/your connectedness to God? (Workbook p. 22, Question #2) Breakout Small-Group Discussion Break group into smaller groups and have participants share from their daily readings and reflections ways that God spoke to them. In their small groups, have participants read John 16: and discuss the following questions: 11. Are sorrow and confusion emotions that we usually keep to ourselves? Do we share them with others? With God? (Workbook p. 26, Question # 1) 12. Jesus tells us, Ask and you will receive. Do you know how to ask God for what you need? Rate your prayer life. What do you want to learn about prayer during this study? What assumptions do you have about prayer? (Workbook p. 26, Question # 3) HOMEWORK: Ask each class member as they read the daily prayers for Week 2, to choose one that touches them in particular and can be shared with the group next week. (Sharing will be voluntary.) NOTE: There will not be homework each week, but you may find it helpful to encourage participants weekly readings in between meetings. Wrap Up, Prayer Requests, and Closing Prayer Have small groups rejoin the larger group. Depending on time remaining, ask if there is anyone who might want to share any personal revelation, insights, or comments from their small-group discussion time. Summarize some of the points brought out in class. Ask for prayer requests. Close in prayer. READING FOR NEXT WEEK: Week 2: Prayers: Our Connection with God s Power
Week 2 Prayers: Our Connection With God s Power SESSION 2 AGENDA (Suggested) Welcome and Opening Prayer Before class begins, choose a sidebar quote from the Workbook readings in Week 2, and write it on a board or chart. Welcome participants. Open the meeting in prayer. Ask for class members to share their favorite prayers from the readings in Week 2 (Week 1 Homework). Video Optional: Show Video for Week 2 Group Discussion Questions for Discussion: 1. What are ways that you keep in touch with friends? 2. How do those habits help build your relationship? 3. What s not helpful in building friendships? 4. How does that translate to your relationship with God? How not? Read Mark 1:35; 6:46; Luke 5: What are some barriers to establishing a personal prayer connection between God and myself? (Workbook p. 36, Question #1) 6. What kind of discipline can I establish that will help build that connection? (Workbook p. 36, Question #2) 7. How have you experienced a connection to God through prayer? 8. How has it been difficult? 9. What will you try next? Read Matthew 6: What do you observe in this passage? Read Matthew 6: A central theme of the Lord s Prayer is the kingdom of God. It is not enough to just pray for the kingdom; we must help create the kingdom. Prayer without action is unfulfilling. What steps can you take to bring action to your prayers? What small step can you make this week to begin bringing about the kingdom? (Workbook p. 42,
Question #1) Breakout Small-Group Discussion Break group into smaller groups and have participants share from their daily readings and reflections ways that God spoke to them. In their small groups, have participants read Matthew 26:36-46 and discuss the following questions: 12. When have you been in a difficult situation? Did you turn to God for help? (Workbook p. 46, Question #1) 13. How have you felt God s strength in a hard time? (Workbook p. 46, Question #2) 14. What can we learn from Jesus prayer about how we might pray? (Workbook p. 46, Question #3) Wrap Up, Prayer Requests, and Closing Prayer Have small groups rejoin the larger group. Depending on time remaining, ask if there is anyone who might want to share any personal revelation, insights, or comments from their small-group discussion time. Summarize some of the points brought out in class. Ask for prayer requests. Close in prayer. READING FOR NEXT WEEK: Week 3: Presence: Our Connection With God s People
Week 3 Presence: Our Connection With God s People SESSION 3 AGENDA (Suggested) Welcome and Opening Prayer Before class begins, choose a sidebar quote from the Workbook readings in Week 3, and write it on a board or chart. Welcome participants. Open the meeting in prayer. Video Optional: Show Video for Week 3 Group Discussion Questions for Discussion: 1. How is the African concept of ubuntu different than what some may think in America? 2. What are some things in life that just showing up for and not actually participating in is okay? 3. Why do you think it s not enough to just show up for worship and small groups? Read Luke 4:42; 5:16; 6: Discuss the concept of sabbath (discussed in the Workbook pp ). 5. What was Jesus doing when he wasn t going off to rest and pray? 6. Jesus deserved a holy break from the work of ministry to renew his relationship with God. Why do you think it s important for us also? Eugene Peterson calls worship the primary means by which we immerse ourselves in the rhythms of stories of God s work... the primary way in which the people of God stay in rhythm with their creator (Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places, pp. 112, 114). 7. Why else do you think it s important for us as Christians to gather with others for times of worship on a regular basis? 8. What about being in a small group together? Why is our presence for others sometimes more than for ourselves? 9. When have you experienced the importance of being in a small group? Read 1 Corinthians 1: Is it a realistic goal to ask that we all agree with one another so that there are no divisions? (Workbook p. 60, Question #1)
11. How can we be united in the love of Christ and allow for diversity of personal conviction? (Workbook p. 60, Question #3) 12. What are the core beliefs that bind us together? What holds us together as a church? (Workbook p. 60, Question #s 2, 4) Breakout Small-Group Discussion Break group into smaller groups and have participants share from their daily readings and reflections ways that God spoke to them. In their small groups, have participants read 1 Corinthians 11:17-26 and discuss the following questions: 13. With what attitude do I approach Communion? (Workbook p. 64, Question #1) 14. Why is Communion a communal event? Does my experience of Communion influence my commitment to stay connected to other disciples in the church? How? (Workbook p. 64, Question #s 2, 3) Wrap Up, Prayer Requests, and Closing Prayer Have small groups rejoin the larger group. Depending on time remaining, ask if there is anyone who might want to share any personal revelation, insights, or comments from their small-group discussion time. Summarize some of the points brought out in class. Ask for prayer requests. Close in prayer. READING FOR NEXT WEEK: Week 4: Gifts: Our Connection to God s Generosity
Week 4 Gifts: Our Connection to God s Generosity SESSION 4 AGENDA (Suggested) Welcome and Opening Prayer Before class begins, choose a sidebar quote from the Workbook readings in Week 4, and write it on a board or chart. Welcome participants. Open the meeting in prayer. Video Optional: Show Video for Week 4 Group Discussion Questions for Discussion: 1. In everyday life, what compels you to be generous with your money and / or possessions? 2. Describe three examples of Christian generosity. 3. If generosity is good, why is greed foolish? Read Luke 21: Why do you think Jesus used this story to illustrate financial generosity? The tithe is mentioned several times in the Old Testament. It is the spiritual discipline of financial generosity that Christian disciples aspire to. 5. As with other spiritual disciplines, financial generosity is not a once-in-a-while practice. What are ways that we can build the discipline of generosity in our lives? Read Matthew 6:1-4, What do you observe in this passage? 7. What is the connection between our relationship with God and our financial generosity as described in these verses? 8. What difference could the spiritual discipline of tithing make in the ministry of the church? Read 2 Corinthians 8: If our command is to follow Jesus, how do we become poor? Does that mean volunteering until we are burnt out and end up with the flu? (Workbook p. 74, Question #1) 10. Is there a practical way to approach this self-sacrificial giving? What makes us willing to give? (Workbook p. 74, Question #2)
Breakout Small-Group Discussion Break group into smaller groups and have participants share from their daily readings and reflections ways that God spoke to them. In their small groups, have participants read Acts 4:32-37 and discuss the following questions: 11. What is hardest for me to share? My money? My time? My expertise? (Workbook p. 72, Question #1) 12. What is my gut reaction when I hear about tithing? (Workbook p. 72, Question #2) 13. Would people outside the church realize I am a Christian on the basis of my generosity? (Workbook p. 72, Question #3) HOMEWORK: Direct class members to take a Spiritual Gifts Assessment before next week s class meeting. While your church may recommend a particular assessment, here are a few suggestions: From the official website of The United Methodist Church: From the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America: To go deeper in exploring spiritual gifts, try Serving From the Heart (Abingdon, 2002), which includes 4 to 8 sessions on spiritual gifts, talents, resources, and passion for service as well as a gifts assessment: (search: Serving From the Heart ) Wrap Up, Prayer Requests, and Closing Prayer Have small groups rejoin the larger group. Depending on time remaining, ask if there is anyone who might want to share any personal revelation, insights, or comments from their small-group discussion time. Summarize some of the points brought out in class. Ask for prayer requests. Close in prayer. READING FOR NEXT WEEK: Week 5: Service: Our Connection to God s Transformation
Week 5 Service: Our Connection to God s Transformation SESSION 5 AGENDA (Suggested) Welcome and Opening Prayer Before class begins, choose a sidebar quote from the Workbook readings in Week 5, and write it on a board or chart. Welcome participants. Open the meeting in prayer. Video Optional: Show Video for Week 5 Group Discussion Questions for Discussion: 1. Ask the group to discuss what spiritual gifts are. Read 1 Corinthians 12: Have you ever found out what your spiritual gifts are? If so, could you share what they are? (Have participants refer to their individual spiritual gifts assessments. If some haven t taken an assessment, direct them to one to help them discover their gifts.) Read 1 Corinthians 12: Do you think we ever hold certain spiritual gifts as more important in the church than others? Why is that? 4. What happens when Christians serve based on their spiritual gifts? God has chosen to redeem this world through the church. Transformation happens when individual disciples discover the unique gifts the Spirit has given them and release those gifts in Christ s service. Read Ephesians 4: How can we, as the body of Christ, reach out to a world that is broken? (Workbook p. 100, Question #1) 6. What will people see in us that will make them want to connect with Christ? (Workbook p. 100, Question #2) Breakout Small-Group Discussion Break group into smaller groups and have participants discuss these next questions and share from their daily readings and reflections ways that God spoke to them. In their small groups, have participants discuss the following questions: 7. Where do you sense God calling you to serve? Is there something holding you back?
8. What steps can you take to begin serving out of your giftedness? Ask groups to end their small-group time by praying together the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi (also printed on Workbook p. 99): Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen. -St. Francis of Assisi ( ) Wrap Up, Prayer Requests, and Closing Prayer Have small groups rejoin the larger group. Depending on time remaining, ask if there is anyone who might want to share any personal revelation, insights, or comments from their small-group discussion time. Summarize some of the points brought out in class. Ask for prayer requests. Close in prayer. READING FOR NEXT WEEK: Week 6: Commitment: Making the Connections
Week 6 Commitment: Making the Connections SESSION 6 AGENDA (Suggested) Welcome and Opening Prayer Before class begins, choose a sidebar quote from the Workbook readings in Week 6, and write it on a board or chart. Welcome participants. Open the meeting in prayer. Video Optional: Show Video for Week 6 Group Discussion Questions for Discussion: 1. What are some groups of which we can be members without much commitment? 2. Are you a member of somewhere that does require a significant commitment? If so, what is it? You ve probably heard the statistic that 20 percent of the people do 80 percent of the work in the church. 3. Though we can understand how that can even happen at churches, why should it especially not happen in churches if everyone is given spiritual gifts? Read Romans 14: Do I view my commitment to Christ as a debt to be paid? (Workbook p. 120, Question #1) 5. Do I make the commitment willingly? (Workbook p. 120, Question #2) 6. What makes me choose the Christian path? (Workbook p. 120, Question #3) 7. What commitments am I ready to make in prayers, presence, gifts, and service? (Workbook p. 120, Question #4) 8. Name some ways that our commitments matter to and make a difference to the church. 9. How do our commitments matter to us? 10. Have you already thought about what commitments you ll be making to the church this year? Breakout Small-Group Discussion Break into smaller groups to share what commitments you will be making this year. (People don t need to share financial amounts.)
If time allows, in their small groups, have participants read Colossians 2:6-7 and discuss the following questions: 11. When do I feel most rooted in Christ? (Workbook p. 122, Question #1) 12. How can I continue to grow in my connection to Christ? (Workbook p. 122, Question #3) Wrap Up, Prayer Requests, and Closing Prayer Have small groups rejoin the larger group. Depending on time remaining, ask if there is anyone who might want to share any personal revelation, insights, or comments from their small-group discussion time. Talk about ways that you have grown in the areas of prayers, presence, gifts, and service over these past six weeks. Ask participants again the question you asked in Week 1: What are you looking for in this group? (Workbook p. 18, Question #2) and see if members accomplished their goals and/or found themselves changing their perspective during the six weeks. Since this is the last meeting, decide together the next step for your group. Perhaps you will keep meeting together. Talk with your church staff about options if you decide to stay together. Close with a prayer of commitment. NEXT WEEK and FOREVER: Making God s Love Real Each and Every Day!
