Why I Am Richer Than the Thieves in Liberia (Part TWO) By Rabbi Gbaba Friends, children, grandchildren, family members and foes alike: As a storyteller for the Liberian people Please permit me to continue The juicy mongers I started a few days ago Because I know your eyes are popping out of their sockets And your ears are itching to hear some more gaylah And to read what I have to say next So that you may gain God s wisdom And put aside your selfish desires And seek the best interest of all Liberian At home and in the diaspora My dear Liberians hear me out: Money indeed is the root of all evil But money is not everything in life For it is said in the great books of life The Holy Bible, the Koran, and Torah That Good name is better than silver and gold For instance, here is why I say so: When you have a sudden heart attack 1
And you fall down in the street Your money in your pocket will not jump from your pocket To put you in an ambulance to take you to the emergency ward But a human being standing by can However it depends whether or not you treated that human being With respect and love when you were up there Other than that people will walk right past you Like June passing by July when you are in trouble or need And people will not shake because of your arrogant and wicked ways! I saw some wicked and rich Liberians die like flies In the soldier barracks (BTC) during the civil war I mean very powerful people during the Doe days I saw them beg for bread crumbs from the poor they suppressed When they were in power and in big time gravy! But when they died Fly self had a better funeral than did our big shots For they were put in wheel barrows and buried in unmarked graves In the sand on South Beach! And so what is this rat race and selfishness all about? How much can we eat and wear? 2
Also you may have all your riches in the world But you cannot keep company with your money Because money cannot talk like human beings can And so you have all the wealth but you are lonesome Because your money will not play a game of card with you; Or play a game of chess with you But a friend, a human being can If you treat people with respect and love Irrespective of your social, political and economic status For example, when you are ill and are lying in bed And you need a glass of water to drink, You cannot call on money to bring you water to drink But you can call on your house boy to serve you If you treat him as a human being and not as a piece of trash Simply because you got money Hence, even though your money might serve you indirectly But it is actually man that serves you directly If you act good to your fellowman Also you may live in a huge mansion of fifty bedrooms But you can only sleep in one bedroom and on one bed You may have a thousand cars in your yard But you can only ride one car at a time 3
And the rest of the other cars will remain parked Unless you share with others around you who do not have a car And how many of our Liberian thieves are willing to share? None because they are too selfish! They are only concerned about I, me, and myself And that is not what the Lord asks of us He asks that we share with our brothers and sisters And that we treat others as we would like to be treated Further, you may have all the monies in the Swiss Bank But the only money that is truly yours is the one you use to buy food to eat And the money you take to buy clothes to wear For the rest will go to others who wish you could die today So they can enjoy your stolen monies and properties tomorrow Therefore money is not all to life; But rather it is how you live with people That can bring you happiness and satisfaction in life I am sure you see this around you every day in Liberia You see how the Liberian people chlorkee when rebel warlords And those with stolen wealth come around In their big, big cars they purchased with blood money Because most Liberians do not want to be bothered with individuals 4
On whose hands are spilled the blood of our loved ones Even though there are some Liberians with pure dly eye Who worship money more than they worship God Such persons will stick behind those killers like flies on poo-poo Without blinking their eyes Just to suck the living blood out of their warlords Because they are Draculas and vampires like their masters And so they play the Chief game with their masters In order to get their aims accomplished Because like their masters they are deceitful creatures And birds of the same feathers flock together Against this backdrop I ain t mad at Liberians who ignore those that broke the law And that roam about as though they are gods in Liberia For the day of the Lord is close at hand When every last one of those Responsible for our suffering, Every last one of those Who forced Liberians to scatter around the world in refugee camps, Every last one of those who are subjecting Liberians to neo-slavery around the globe And subjecting our children to prostitution and poor health conditions Denying our children access to equality of educational opportunities And depriving our children of their childhood 5
And Subjecting our people to bad roads and poor medicare; Every last one of those who do not care to look back To find out how their brothers and sisters are doing in strange lands; Or to find out what foods they eat and what clothes they wear And how they get their next daily meals; And whether Liberians in refugee camps around the world Have roofs over their heads and mattresses to sleep on Or whether they are sleeping on cold hard floors But yet you Liberian warlords and rebel supporters Continue to drink chilly pissy Club Beer and Guinness Stouts And continue to keep foreign troops in your pocket books and wallets So as to ransack the limited resources of Liberia And prolong the suffering of the Liberian people Well dear warlords and your staunch supporters I got good news for you! Long ago God used to be way in heaven looking down at us In those days he used to send Angel Gabriel to warn us But these days God does not send his angels to us anymore He comes down himself to stress the gravity of the matter So these days God is not far away And he does not wear the big country gown He used to wear when addressing our forefathers; 6
He does not keep the long beards he wore in centuries past And the long plait of hair he had on his head These days God shaved his beard and keeps a Sarboo hair cut These days God wears Addidas shorts, Nike sneaks, and a headband to show all of us He is not aftas! I saw Him put on his shorts, sneakers, and headband And He is ready to chase every last one of you out of Monrovia For suppressing the Liberian people And he won t stop until you are behind bars at the Zwedru Corrections Palace That is the type of palace where people your kind That caused the death of over a quarter million people belong! Rabbi Gbaba September 19,
