1 Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary NT549: Studies in the Book of Revelation Professor: Dr. Alvin Padilla Fall 2013 Office Hours M-F 8:30AM-5:00 Tel: COURSE DESCRIPTION An in-depth study of one of the most fascinating, complex and abused books of the NT. This course seeks to improve the students hermeneutical skills by focusing on exegeting the text against the OT, Jewish and Hellenistic backgrounds. Particular emphasis will be devoted to understanding apocalyptic imagery and literature and how to translate that understanding to a 21 st century world. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. The student will grow in his/her ability to read and faithfully interpret the Greek text of Revelation (Articles 1-2 of the GCTS Mission Statement). 2. The student will grow in his/her understanding of, and ability to appropriate, the theological and pastoral resources of Revelation and his/her ability to think critically and biblically about the issues raised in reading apocalyptic literature (Articles 1-4 of the GCTS Mission Statement). 3. The student s life, theology and ministry will be more significantly informed by the message of Revelation (Articles 3-4 of GCTS Mission Statement). REQUIRED TEXTS It is assumed that the student will have a good study Bible and a number of modern day versions (English [NIV, ESV, NRSV], Spanish, or any other modern language) for his/her use. 1. Mounce, Robert. The Book of Revelation. (NICNT). Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, Any other commentary of the student's choosing with a different theological perspective than the student's. In preparation for each class, the student should read and analyze the assigned passages. 2. Read the secondary literature (the commentaries) that corresponds to the assigned passage. 3. Exegesis paper: The student will prepare an exegesis paper dealing with a passage in Revelation. The paper will discuss the meanings of key words and concepts, grammatical issues (as mentioned in the grammars and commentaries), the structure of the passage, and the author s purpose in writing the passage. 4. New Testament Theology paper. The student will prepare a theology paper on his/her position relative to the millennium. The paper reflect a thorough acquaintance with Revelation 20:1-4 and the various millenial views evident in Christian theology(ies). 5. Exegetical Notebook The student shall prepare an Exegetical Notebook on the Book of Revelation in which he/she will record his/her reflections and analysis of each assigned passage on the schedule, along with other relevant exegetical and theological notes gathered from the reading, class lectures and the exegetical task. The exegetical notebook will be turned in on the last day of class COURSE EVALUATION Class requirement a. Exegetical notebook 25% b. Theological position paper 25% c. Exegesis paper 25% d.
