GREAT EVENTS OF THE BIBLE -- GOD S COVENANT WITH DAVID. (Slide #2) Introduction: A. Illustrations: 1. You come up with a great idea; your parents tell you No! 2. You come up with a great idea to save money at your work; your bosses will not accept the suggestion. 3. You come up with a great idea at church; the elders do not initiate it. 4. How do you react in those situations? B. ( ) David -- One Of The GREAT Heroes Of The Bible. C. In Our Last Three Lessons, We Examined: 1. David anointed during Saul s reign; he was a mighty warrior but he had to constantly flee Saul s attempts to kill him. 2. He was king over Judah for 7 ½ years; then he was king over all 12 tribes of Israel for 33 years. 3. He set up his throne in Jerusalem; his desire to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. D. ( ) Tonight -- God s Covenant With David. E. Text: 2 Sam. 7:8-17 I. David s Anxious Joy To Bring The Ark Of The Covenant To Jerusalem. A. (Slide #3) His First Attempt: II Sa. 6: The Ark was at the house of Abinadab; this is when Abinadab s sons, Uzzah and Ahio put it on a cart. 1
2. David was elated! a. Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the LORD on all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals. 5 b. When the oxen stumbled and Uzzah put his hand up to steady It, he was killed. 6,7 c. David was angry at God! 8 3. The Ark was left at the house of Obed-Edom for 3 months. 4. During that time David and the religious leaders studied the Law and realized that they had disobeyed God by moving It on a cart instead of having the Kohathites to carry It. B. (Slide #4) His Second Attempt: II Sa. 6: They moved It according to God s directions. 2. David was leaping and dancing with joy -- it seems that having the Ark in Jerusalem was an ultimate goal for him! a. They were shouting and blowing trumpets. 15 b. He was rejoicing before the Lord! 21 C. But This Was Not His Ultimate Goal -- David LONGED To Build A Temple To Honor God And To House The Ark Of The Covenant. II Sa. 7: Remember that David had built a magnificent house of cedar. II Sa. 5:11 2. When David brought peace and rest to the nation from enemy attacks, he immediately asked Nathan if he could build a Temple to house the Ark of God; he felt bad living in a fine cedar house while the Ark was in a tent. II Sa. 7:1,2 a. Nathan initially told David to proceed. 3 b. However, that night God told Nathan that He had never commanded that a permanent house be built! Later God told David that He would not allow him, a man of war, to build him a house! I Chr. 28:2,3 II. (Slide #5) God s Covenant With David. II Sa. 7:8-17 A. Text: (Slide #6) Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, Thus says the LORD of hosts: I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the 2
earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, (Slide #7) 11 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the LORD tells you that He will make you a house. 12 When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. (Slide #8) 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever. 17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David. B. (Slide #9) God s Message To David: ( ) I have blessed you abundantly! a. I took you from the sheepfold to be ruler over Israel! 8 b. I have delivered you from all of your enemies. 9 c. I have made you a great name to compare with all the great men on the earth! 9 2. ( ) I will ordain a place for My people; they will not move again! 10 a. They will have their own land. 1. They were nomads from the time that Abram left Ur until Israel came into Canaan. 2. They will not have to move any more. b. Israel was their home. 3. ( ) I will give My people peace from oppression. a. They were oppressed in Egypt. b. They faced constant struggle as they cleared out Canaan in the days of Joshua. c. They faced a constant cycle of peace followed by oppression as they were punished for their disobedience during the days of the Judges. d. God is going to give them peace from their enemies. 4. ( ) I will establish your house. 11. When you die, I will establish your son as king! 12 a. David will have a dynasty -- kings will follow who are from his lineage! b. Your son will build My house! 13 c. I will establish his kingdom forever. 13 d. I will be His Father; he will be my son. 14 e. If he commits sin, using men I will chasten him! 13 3
f. My mercy will not depart from him as I took it from Saul. 15 g. Your family, your kingdom, and your throne will be established forever. 5. Discuss forever in the O.T. meaning as long as the covenant lasts. C. Nathan Gave The Message To David Just As God Had Given It. 7:17 III. (Slide #10) David s Response To God s Covenant! A. Text: (Slide #11) Then King David went in and sat before the LORD; and he said: Who am I, O Lord GOD? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O Lord GOD; and You have also spoken of Your servant s house for a great while to come. Is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD? 20 Now what more can David say to You? For You, Lord GOD, know Your servant. 21 For Your word s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all these great things, to make Your servant know them. (Slide #12) 22 Therefore You are great, O Lord GOD. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 And who is like Your people, like Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a name--and to do for Yourself great and awesome deeds for Your land- -before Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, the nations, and their gods? 24 For You have made Your people Israel Your very own people forever; and You, LORD, have become their God. (Slide #13) 25 Now, O LORD God, the word which You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house, establish it forever and do as You have said. 26 So let Your name be magnified forever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel. And let the house of Your servant David be established before You. 27 For You, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant, saying, I will build you a house. Therefore Your servant has found it in his heart to pray this prayer to You. (Slide #14) 28 And now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant. 29 Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You; for You, O Lord GOD, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever. B. (Slide #15) Observe David s Reactions To God s Promises: 4
C. ( ) David Was SO Humbled By God s Promised Blessings! 1. Who am I, O Lord GOD? And what is my house, You have also spoken of Your servant s house for a great while to come. 19 D. ( ) He Gave Praise And Glory To God! 1. You are great, O Lord GOD. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You! 2. He understood that he did not deserve all these blessing; his descendants did not deserve all these blessings; Israel did not deserve all that God had and would do for them! 3. God chose to redeem one nation, Israel, as His people! God performed great and awesome wonders as you delivered Israel from Egypt, the nations, and their gods! You have made Israel your people forever and have become their God. 24 D. ( ) David Prayed That God Will Establish His Covenant Forever! 25 E. (Slide #16) David Prayed That The LORD Will Be Magnified Forever! 26 F. ( ) He Prayed That His House Will Be Established Before God! 26 G. ( ) He Prayed God s Blessings Upon His Family Forever! H. ( ) Of Course There Is A Messianic Component To God s Promise To David! 1. The Messiah would come through his lineage! Mt. 1:1, 5-6 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:.. 5 Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, 6 and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah. 2. The Messiah would be the seed of woman Gen. 3:15; he was the seed of Abraham, Gen. 22:18; this was a prophecy about the Christ! Gal. 3:16 5
3. He would set up an everlasting Kingdom that was greater than David s Kingdom; He would set up a spiritual kingdom that would be for believers of all nations who would submit to Him! IV. (Slide #17) What Is Your Reaction When You Are Told No? A. Your Reaction To Your Parents, Boss, Or Elders When They Say No Tells Volumes About Your Heart! 1. It is so easy to become angry. 2. Many are hurt, sulk, and are never as involved as in the past. 3. They just stop putting their heart into their efforts. B. (Slide #18) Look At David s Reaction When He Was Told No! David Was Not Allowed To Build The Temple; However, He Was Determined To Make All Of The Preparations So Solomon Could Build It! 1. He was in awe of God s Covenant! 2. He began to make preparations for the building of the Temple! I Chr As he neared death, David called the nation together and prepared for the transition the kingship from himself to Solomon. I Chr He explained how he longed to build the Temple. I Sam. 28:2-3 Then King David rose to his feet and said, Hear me, my brethren and my people: I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool of our God, and had made preparations to build it. 3 But God said to me, You shall not build a house for My name, because you have been a man of war and have shed blood. 5. He urged Solomon to serve God with his whole heart and to erect the Temple. I Chr. 28:9,10 6. David gave Solomon the plans for the Temple. I Chr. 28:
Conclusion: A. God Gave His Covenant To David! B. This Covenant Impacted The Nation For The Next 400 Years (Ten Tribes Were Loyal For About 275 Years; The Two Tribes Were Loyal For About 400 Years). It Continued For The Remnant Throughout The Old Testament Age. C. What A Great Event This Is -- This Covenant Reached Beyond The Law Of Moses; In David s Seed, The Precious Messiah, Jesus, Came As The Savior Of All Sinners! 7
