5 MEMORY VERSE HELPS MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 119:11 GOD S WORD AND ME #4 The Prodigal Son Thy Word have I hidden in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee. (The underlined portion of the verse indicates what the younger children should memorize. See Involvement Helps for Younger Children for helps in teaching the verse to the younger children.) INTRODUCE THE VERSE: Have you ever hidden something? Perhaps you hid it so you could keep it for a special time when you would need it. Our Bible verse today tells us that if we hide God s Word in our hearts, it will help keep us from sin. Let s learn the verse to see how that can be. READ THE VERSE: Read the verse from the Bible or have an older child read it; then have all the children read with you from the verse visual. EXPLAIN THE VERSE: Psalm 119:11 This is where the verse is found in the Bible. We call it the address or reference. It is found in the book of Psalm, chapter 119, verse 11. Thy Word have I hidden in mine heart, When we memorize God s Word, we are hiding it in our hearts. In other words, we are storing it up for future protection. that I might not sin against Thee. As we store away God s Word in our hearts, it helps protect us and guard us when we are tempted to disobey God and sin. REPEAT THE VERSE: Boys or Girls After reading this verse from the Bible, explaining what it means, and repeating it at least two times, you may begin this drill. Have the class pass a Bible from one child to the next child as they recite the verse. If a girl is holding the Bible at the end of the verse, all the girls join in reciting the verse together. If the Bible stops in the hands of a boy, then all the boys recite the verse. (Be sure you tell the children to handle the Bible with care.) CHILD EVANGELISM FELLOWSHIP OF EASTERN PA, INC. P.O. Walk around room as if going on a trip, looking happy. Wave good-bye. Under Figures IV-36, IV-37 Allow children to tell what they would buy if they had a lot of money. Have each child pull out his pretend money bag and reach in, trying to find another coin. Reach deeper, all the way to the bottom. Turn bag upside down and shake it. Under Figures IV-39, IV-40a, b Have everyone rub his tummy, looking hungry. Ask, What do you think he would like to eat? Allow children to tell things for which they get hungry. Under Figure IV-42 Celebrate together by raising hands into the air and cheering, Hip, Hip, Hooray! Hip, Hip, Hooray! BIBLE LEARNING GAME: You Are Special to God Have everyone form a circle. Choose a child to represent the son who left home. This child stands in the center. Everyone else sings and claps to London Bridge tune: My son has come back home today, Home today, home today. My son has come back home today. I m so happy. Choose three children to be servants: #1 puts robe on returning son. #2 puts on ring. #3 puts on sandals. Say, That son was very important to his daddy. 8 GO AND TELL BOX Week #15 Information About the Saüls INFORMATION (Suggested item to put in the Go and Tell Box Map of Haiti) What do you think map of Haiti has to do with going and telling? (Let the children share their ideas.) The map reminds us of our missionaries in Haiti. Who remembers their names? (Show picture.) Haiti a small country, is part of an island in the Atlantic Ocean south of the state of Florida. It is a very poor country. Perhaps you have heard of the hurricane and other storms that have struck Haiti in recent months. There was no major damage to the area where Pastor Lucien has the school, health clinic, and the Bible Institute is located. But some of the churches from which the pastors who came to the Bible Institute this year had major damage; roofs blown off, walls knocked down, and huge amounts of flooding. Many people also lost their homes to the winds and floods from the hurricane. Pastor Lucien recently wrote a letter, in which he remind us, that the children in Haiti need to be rescued from the darkness of sin. They help the children by sharing the Good News of Jesus coming to earth to be their Saviour. They do this by inviting them to church, almost half of those who attend their church are children. You may also remember that they have a Christian Elementary school. At the school, they have devotions and classes every day where the Bible is taught at their grade level. Because Haiti is a poor country they provide a hot lunch every day. Pastor Lucien and his son Royden helped over 15 different churches hold Vacation Bible Schools for the children in different areas this past summer. They also helped the Pastors and children s workers host special holiday programs for Christmas and Easter. PRAYER THANK God for protecting Pastor Lucien and the school property from the hurricane so the children can continue to hear about Jesus. ASK God to give Pastor Lucien wisdom and understanding of ways they can reach more children. CHILD EVANGELISM FELLOWSHIP OF EASTERN PA, INC. P.O. BOX 4375 HARRISBURG, PA

GOD S WORD AND ME #4 Luke 15: Have you ever lost something: a book, some money, or special toy? - Were you happy about that? Of course not! It makes you sad - Bible tells us about something that was lost; let s see what happens (Place figs. IV-31, IV-32, IV-33) - Young man in our lesson lived with father and older brother - Father was rich; owned cattle, sheep, many fields, and pastures - Bible says, had servants; probably had large, beautiful home - Father must have taught his sons about the true God; maybe they had some of God s Word on scrolls - No doubt, he taught them about the coming Messiah, or Saviour O (Remove all figs.; add figs. aa, bb) - When each of boys reached age 12, probably went on special a trip to Jerusalem, to the House of God - While there, the boys would have learned about sacrifices - Because of their sin, a lamb had to be killed and burned on altar - This would remind them that one day a Saviour would come and die for their sins (Add figs. cc, dd) P, E Heb. 9:22... Without shedding of blood is no remission. (Remove all figs.) - After making sacrifices, father and boys would travel home - The younger son was not happy at home; he wanted his own way more than his father s way - He wanted his own way so much he decided to leave home (Place figs. IV-31, IV-32, IV-34) - One day, he said to his father, Give me the portion of goods that falleth to me

13 - He didn t say please; he didn t even let his father know what he wanted it for - He just said, Give me - Bible says father divided up all he had & gave each son his part - It was not many days later when he packed everything up and left (Remove all figs.; add fig. IV-35) - I ll go far away, he probably thought, and have a great time! - The father sadly watched his son leave; perhaps father wondered if son would be safe or get into trouble - The father could have been angry, but he wasn t; he never stopped loving his son - Father was living what God said in His Word MT YOU SHOULD LIVE GOD S WORD - The young man traveled many miles to another country - He ran away because he wanted his own way, just like we do S, PAU Isa. 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way When the young son got far away from home, it didn t take long for him to find trouble (Place figs. IV-36, IV-37) - Others found out he had money; they pretended to be his friends - The got him to go to one place and then another where they could have a good time - Was he really happy? No; God must have reminded him that the things he was doing were wrong - This younger son kept right on spending his money; he didn t seem to notice moneybag empty - One day he had no money; what would he do? - Soon his clothes began to look ragged; then a famine hit that country, and there was no food - Only the rich people could buy food; poor people went hungry - He went back to his friends, after all, he had given them a lot - Surely they would help him now (Replace fig. IV-35 with 38; move 36 & 37 to opposite sides of board) - They didn t care what happened to him since his money was gone (Remove figs. IV-36, IV-37) - He wandered, hungry and unhappy, trying to find a job so he could get something to eat - He went to one man and begged for a job; I ll do anything! he pleaded - You may go to the field and feed my pigs, the farmer said (Remove fig. IV-38; add figs. IV-39, IV-40a, b) - The young man s face must have grown pale; Feed the pigs? What a terrible job! - He had to have something to eat; as he fed scraps to the pigs, no one gave him anything to eat - As he watched the dirty, greedy pigs, he began to think about the good things in his father s house - If only he had stayed at home! It was such a wonderful home! - How foolish he had been not to listen to his father - He had done many wrong things; worst sin was not believing what his father had taught about God - Each day, he got more hungry; he finally said, My father s servants have plenty to eat I am dying with hunger; I will go to my father and say, I have sinned against Heaven & you make me as one of your hired servants (Remove all figs.; add fig. IV-38) - He got up, left pigs and started home; would his father forgive him? - He didn t seem to know that his father would never stop loving him; dad lived what God said in His Word MT, PAS YOU SHOULD LIVE GOD S WORD Psalm 119:11 Thy Word have I hidden in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.
