Heb. 9:1-14 The New & Better Sanctuary We are working through Hebrews, and the writer is comparing the Old Covenant - the Law given through Moses - with the New and Better Covenant in Messiah Jesus This first half of Hebrews ch. 9 speaks about the tabernacle of Israel, and compares it to a greater and better sanctuary. The first was earthly, we may say that the greater sanctuary is heavenly. The tabernacle was God s tent among the tents of Israel. We must imagine a huge tent city, with a couple of million inhabitants. God s tabernacle is right in the centre, and three tribes are camped on each of the North, South, East and West sides of God s tent. The tabernacle was probably even built in a similar way to their tents. Above it was a pillar of cloud during daylight, which became a pillar of fire at night. There is much in the design of the tabernacle which foreshadowed Jesus and the New Covenant. For instance, there were 33 rows of coloured animal skins covering the tabernacle, but the last 3 were pulled back and what was inside was on view. How many years was the Lord Jesus among us? How many of those years was He hidden, and how many years was He in the public eye? You can find many books or Youtube movies that will take you through practically every detail of the construction and rituals of the tabernacle of God in the wilderness and learn point-by-point about Jesus and the New Covenant - just 1 keep in mind that no matter how wonderful the tabernacle was, it was only a foreshadow of the light of Jesus Himself. Remember too that this is not about going back to a former glory, but that these things - which had glory - pointed forwards to greater glory in the Gospel of Jesus. The reason I am not going into lots of details about all these things today is because Paul in v. 5 says: of these things we cannot now speak in detail. Neither can I, for my task is to explain an apply what Scripture gives us here, and leave a thorough and detailed explanation of the tabernacle of God for another time. Moving in from the entrance on the East, you would have come to the bronze altar of sacrifice, upon which the prepared animal sacrifices and offerings were burned, then to the bronze laver - a large pool of water for the priests to wash. There would have been a lot of blood and gore in that outer court, and the smell of that area was that of a slaughter-house combined with a camp-fire barbecue, as animals were burned on the altar. But Paul has ignored the brazen altar, and the laver containing water, and all the business of sacrifices and offerings in the outer court. He focuses our attention on the tent - the sanctuary - and what it contains. Now even the first covenant had regulations of divine worship and the earthly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle prepared, the outer one, in which were the lamp-stand and the table and the sacred bread; this is called the holy place. [Heb. 9:1-2] The outer part of the tabernacle itself contained a lamp-stand (which was shaped like a tree), and a table upon which bread (show-bread) was placed each day. The lamp-stand reminds us of the tree of life in the Garden of Eden, but it is now a tree of light. The table of bread had 12 fresh loaves laid there each day - one for each tribe of Israel. It was not for God to eat, but the intention was that the priests would eat the bread in the presence of God. Adam ate with God - before he fell. Abraham ate with God. David ate this bread, and wrote about the table of the Lord [Psa. 23]. Now, let me repeat: all of this is about JESUS. JESUS AND THE TABERNACLE Follow these statements with me from John ch. 1 1 Some writer and commentators - including Andrew Murray and Watchman Nee - take the tabernacle with it s outer court and outer and inner sanctuaries as a symbol of the human soul, or of the deeper life of a Christian. I think that is to miss the point. This is firstly and primarily about Jesus. " 1 of " 6

In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. [John 1:4] And the Word became flesh, and dwelt [tabernacled] among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. [John 1:14] The tabernacle of Israel was a foreshadow, a type as Bible scholars say, of Jesus. His glory was hidden within a human frame, yet He is the life and the light of men, and John and others saw His glory. Later in John s Gospel, the first two of the 7 I AM statements of the Lord Jesus are these I AM the Bread of Life. [John 6:35, 41, 48, 51] I AM the Light of the World. [John 8:12, 23, 24, 28, 58 & John 9:5] Those are two of the pieces of furniture in the Holy Place, the altar of incense being counted as part of (or the entrance to) the Holy of Holies. That is tabernacle imagery, used by the Lord Jesus of Himself. Jesus is the Bread of Life. We are fed by Him, and we eat at His table every time we celebrate communion. Jesus is our Tree of Life and of Light. He is the source of all our light and all our life. But we are moving in even closer here Behind the second veil there was a tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies, having a golden altar of incense [Heb. 9:3-4] The golden altar of incense was in fact across the entrance to the Holy of Holies, and the high priest stepped behind that, through the veil, to stand before the ark of the covenant just once a year on the Day of Atonement. Scripture here speaks of that altar of incense as belonging to the inner sanctuary, even though it stood outside the veil. The altar of incense had burning charcoal coals - which were renewed throughout the day from the bronze altar of sacrifice - on which incense was burned. If you have been to an Orthodox, Catholic or High Anglican church, you may 2 have seen and smelled incense smoke. The smoke and smell filled that Holy Place. Incense in Scripture is a symbol of prayer and of worship. Zechariah the father of John the Baptist was offering incense at the table in the temple when an angel of the Lord appeared to him [Luke 1:9-11]. But we are going into the very inner part of the tabernacle - the Holy of Holies - within the thick curtain or veil. There we see the Ark of the Covenant and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding the manna, and Aaron s rod which budded, and the tables of the covenant; and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail. [Heb. 9:4-5] Ark The Ark contained the broken tablets of the Law - the first set, which Moses had thrown down when he saw the people in wild rebellion against the Lord. (A replacement set was made and put on public display in the camp of Israel - probably outside the tabernacle enclosure.) It also contained a golden jar containing manna (the food which God provided every day for the people of Israel in the wilderness), and Aaron s rod that had budded (which was a sign of divinely appointed leadership). Cherubim 2 When Christian churches apply gold leaf to their buildings, put on holy robes, and burn incense they are retreating from the reality of Jesus to the shadows of the Old Covenant. " 2 of " 6

Above the ark two statuary cherubim looked down onto the golden lid - the mercy seat - which covered the ark of the covenant, which contained the broken law of God. Their wings almost touched in the space above the mercy seat. (Both cherubim and seraphim are described in Scripture as having wings, but angels are not.) 3 In Genesis, after the Fall of Man, the entrance to the Garden of Eden was guarded by cherubim and a flaming 4 sword. [Gen. 3:24] 5 In Ezekiel the prophet sees cherubim The cherubim that Ezekiel saw had wings and four faces: the face of a cherub the face of a man the face of a lion and the face of an eagle. The ark and the cherubim were an earthly copy of a heavenly reality. Heavenly beings guarding the presence of the Most Holy One. Cherubim are guardians of the presence of the Holy One. A number of times in the OT the LORD is declared to be 6 7 enthroned among the cherubim. The cherubim are not protecting God, they are protecting us from approaching God. Adam could not stay in the presence of God having become a sinner. Cherubim and a flaming sword kept him away. 8 Ezekiel and Isaiah were kept from coming too close to the majesty of God by heavenly guardians. Our God is holy, holy, holy [Isa. 6:3, Rev. 4:8]. He is a consuming fire [Exo. 24:17, Deu. 4:24, 9:3, Isa. 29:6, 30:27, 30:30, 33:14, Heb. 12:29]. People say and sing some very odd things about the fire of God. It is an expression and symbol of His holiness, and His holy fiery presence burns up sin and evil. Be careful about asking for the fire of God to come. If you do, be ready yourself to be lit up by His light, and cleansed by His fire. So there were moulded and carved golden cherubim above the the ark of the covenant, looking downwards, their wings almost enclosing a space above the mercy seat, and beneath their wings was? Shekinah The cherubim are called cherubim of glory, for above the ark of the covenant - between the cherubim - was the shekinah, a visible sign of God s presence. The word is Hebrew, but does not come from the Bible but from Rabbinical literature. It means dwelling or settling. What did that look like? The nearest that I can arrive at is that it resembled a ball or point of fire and light. When Moses saw a bush burning, but it was not burning, yet full of fire and light - what did he see? The presence of God - visible as shekinah. When Jesus was transfigured before His closest three disciples, and His face shone like the sun, what did they see? The shekinah of God - light and fire (which is what Jesus is, no less than the Father). And above that shekinah between the cherubim - above the tabernacle - was another sign of God s presence, the pillar of cloud by day and fire by night - directly above the Holy of Holies. The pillar of cloud spread out and covered the 3 Cherubim [Hb. keruvim] is plural, the singular is cherub [Hb. keruv]. 4 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life. [Gen. 3:24] 5 Eze. 9:3, 10:1-20, 11:22. 6 English versions usually add above in italics to these verses, but between or among would be equally valid. 7 2Sam. 6:22, Kings 19:15, 1Chr. 13:6, Psa. 80:11, Psa. 99:1 8 Isaiah saw seraphim ( fiery serpents ) [Isa. 6] " 3 of " 6

whole camp, in fact, and sheltered the Israelites from the burning desert sun. The pillar of fire by night lit up the whole camp, so that if you stepped out of your tent at night you needed no light but God s light. Mercy seat The top of the Ark was covered with gold, and is called the mercy seat (Gk. hilasterios). On that golden lid was sprinkled once a year the blood of the atonement for the sins of Israel. Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle performing the divine worship, but into the second, only the high priest enters once a year, not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance. [Heb. 9:6-7] Once a year, the High Priest took the blood of the atonement offering into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled it onto the mercy seat, between the cherubim, into the very presence of God. Let s put that together in this way God - between the cherubim - looked down on the golden lid of the ark of the covenant, within which was His broken law, but the broken law was covered by the blood of atonement. That is why that lid is called the mercy seat - the sin of Israel was covered by the blood of atonement, so that God was merciful and forgiving towards Israel. We will come back to that as we work through the rest of Heb. ch. 9 and into ch. 10 The Holy Spirit is signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the outer tabernacle is still standing, which is a symbol for the present time. [Heb. 9:8-9] Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, since they relate only to food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation. [Heb. 9:9-10] Israel were given the sanctuary of God among them in the wilderness, were to enter their rest in Canaan, live in their promised land and Jerusalem their city, with a Davidic king to rule over them. These are all fulfilled for us through Jesus, and the New and better Covenant. They are for us eternal and heavenly realities. We live in the new, greater, better and final Covenant. The detailed rituals of the Old Covenant are not for us. We are not under (that) Law. We are not even under the food laws and sabbath-keeping of the Old Covenant. The tabernacle -though rich in meaning and symbolism, was only a symbol until the present time - the age of Messiah and of His Gospel. The time of reformation came. No, not Luther, Zwingli and Calvin Long before that - Jesus Messiah! We are not under Law but under Grace. We are not under Moses but Messiah. At Messiah s death on the cross the veil in the temple (closing off the holy of Holies) was torn open from top to bottom. The way into the holy place has been disclosed, and it is not into any earthly sanctuary but into to the throne room of God. But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. [Heb. 9:11-12] " 4 of " 6

Having made atonement by His own blood, Jesus ascended to the Father. He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation. He entered into the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. That holy place is not earthly, it is the throne of God. Jesus is our atonement and our mercy seat. 9 The same word appear also in Romans 3 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation [mercy seat] in His blood through faith. [Rom. 3:24 25] The ark, the mercy seat above the broken law, the sprinkled blood - these are a picture of Jesus and what He has done for us in propitiation, atonement and redemption by His blood. He stands between God and His broken Law for us, and it is through faith in His atoning blood that we are forgiven and restored to God. but we pick up again on the mercy seat and the blood of Jesus in the second part of Heb. ch. 9 and into ch. 10. He is our high priest of the good things to come. We live in the now-and-not-yet of His Covenant and Kingdom. We are saved from sin but must still overcome sin. We live in a fallen world. But the better is yet to come, and our High Priest will lead us there. One day all difficulty, and distress, and disappointment, and duress, and disease, and disaster, and demonic opposition, and even death will be put away forever. Our Lord Jesus will lead us through to that better day, from the start of faith to the end of faith. He is Alpha and Omega - the beginning and the end. So here is the application for us today at the end of this section For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? [Heb. 9:13-14] [Tabernacle plan] This is all about Jesus, and here are the lessons for us Jesus has been offered as our perfect and final sacrifice, for all people, for all sin, for all time. He has made eternal redemption. He is our atonement and mercy seat. We are forgiven through His blood, simply on the basis of faith We are washed and renewed by the Holy Spirit, our conscience cleansed from works of death (so that we are now engaged in works of life) We draw near and find Jesus to be our Light, our Life, our Daily Bread We draw even nearer, and see His glory, and worship Him and We serve the living God. Notice we serve the living God - the God who is in all life, and engages in all of our life. There is no divide between spiritual and secular in serving the Lord. It is not about whether we do this or that - in-church, beyond-church, in the home, out of the home, paid or unpaid. Having come to find Jesus as our All-in-All, being devoted to Him from the heart, we serve Him. Firstly, in devotion, in prayer, in worship, in obedience. Then 9 Only Paul and John among the NT writers use the Gk. words relating to propitiation : hilasterios, hilaskomai, hilasmos. " 5 of " 6

If we have a family to raise, we serve the Lord doing so. If we go to an office or workplace we serve the Lord doing so. If you think that in doing those things you cannot serve the Lord, you need to read the Scripture, and you need to see that serving Him flows from the heart, and whatever we do during our waking hours is serving the Lord if we do it from our heart for Him. Even most Protestant services follow a pattern seen in the tabernacle Altar of incense: We have stood as in His presence and offered Him worship today. Lampstand: In receiving from His word today, we have stood before His light. We may have been enlightened in our understanding. We may have been searched by His truth Bread table: In communion today, we come to our table of showbread. It is the Lord s table, and by taking bread and wine we show the Lord s death until He comes. We eat with Him. We sit at His table as Abraham sat with the Lord. We eat the Lord s bread as David ate the showbread from the tabernacle. It is true for us as for David: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. [Psa 23:5] Jesus broken body and shed blood are our salvation, but He also is our Daily Bread, our Bread of Life. Having received light and life again from the Lord Jesus, we worship Him, giving thanks to Him, (as if at the altar of incense), and then we go out again to serve Him in His world. That is the lesson of the tabernacle - an earthly image of a heavenly reality. It is all about Jesus. The day will come when we can dwell in the house of the Lord forever - in the Holy of Holies with our God. For now, we come to Him, worship Him, receive from Him, and go to serve Him - again and again - until He comes.
