3 S T O Y xodus Getting out of gypt The children will participate in the story of srael s exodus from gypt as they consider Moses faithful leadership and God s powerful protection of his people. Materials For the teacher: 1 pillar from the Preclass Activity 1 yard stick or long cardboard tube large writing surface Preparation 1. On the large writing surface, write: Night and Day; e Still; Arms Up; Happy nding. 2. Practice presenting this story with emphasis and enthusiasm, using the props. ntroducing the ible Story Open your ible to xodus Tell the children that today s ible Story is found in the Old Testament book of xodus chapters 12 through 14. emind them that in the last lesson they saw the many ways that God used his power to convince Pharaoh to let the sraelites go. Many times, Pharaoh said no to God and each time, God did something to show Pharaoh his mighty power. Finally, after the final plague of death to the firstborn in gypt, Pharaoh said yes to God and he let Moses and the people go. n today s lesson, you will hear about more amazing ways that God used his power to lead the people out of gypt and across the sea! God showed his people that he would protect them even when it seemed impossible. Today s lesson will show you that God leads his people and protects them along the way. Have you ever been in a place that made you feel scared or unhappy and you just wanted to get out? (Take a few brief responses.) That s how God s people, the sraelites, felt about living in gypt. For more than four hundred years they had worked as slaves and the gyptians had been very mean to them. After God used Moses to bring all the plagues on gypt, Pharaoh agreed to let God s people leave. The people were so happy that they could finally get out of gypt. Presenting the ible Story Tell the children that they will help you tell the story by acting out four different events written on the large writing surface. Tell them to listen and watch you closely. ntroduce each of the four events by referring to its title on the large writing surface. Night and Day! During the night, Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and told them to get up, take the sraelites and leave gypt! God told Moses to tell the sraelites to ask the gyptians for pieces of silver and gold and clothing. So the sraelites did this and the gyptians gave them whatever they asked for. God led the sraelites through the desert toward the ed Sea. y day, God went ahead of them and guided them in a pillar of cloud. And by night God went ahead of them in a pillar of fire to give them light. God worked it out so that they could travel by day or night. Hold up one of the children s pillars from Preclass and have the children line up behind you. ead them by marching in a circle, saying: With a pillar of cloud, God leads us in the day. With a pillar of fire God leads us at night. March around the circle several times, saying this with the children and then have them sit down. e Still! When Pharaoh realized that the sraelites were gone and he had no more slaves to do his work, he changed his mind. Pharaoh sent his army to chase the sraelites and bring them back. When the sraelites saw the gyptians chasing them, they were very afraid and cried out to God. Moses told the people to not be afraid, but to be still and God would fight for them. Tell the children to imagine they are being chased by the gyptians. Have the children cry out, God, please save us! Help us! We are going to die! As the children are crying out, stand up and say, e still! God will fight for you! Have the children be quiet as soon as you say these words. Spring by Discipleship Publications nternational 9-4-3
4 S T O Y xodus Then God told Moses to raise his staff over the ed Sea and God would divide the sea in half! The sraelites were going to walk through the sea on dry ground! Arms Up! Moses believed God and obeyed. Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night God drove back the sea with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land! The waters were divided, and the sraelites went through on dry ground with a wall of water on their right and on their left. Have the children form two lines, facing each other and forming an aisle. Stand at the head of the aisle and hold up your staff. Tell the children to wave their arms, making a blowing sound like a heavy wind and bringing their arms up like the waves being blown back. et each child take a turn stepping out of line and walking down the aisle, as if through the ed Sea, and then returning to their place in the line. Happy nding! Not only did God s people cross the ed Sea on dry ground, but the gyptians chased after them into the sea! God looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the gyptian army and threw it into confusion. He made the wheels of their chariots come off so they couldn t chase the sraelites. The gyptians saw what was happening and they knew they had to get away from the sraelites because God was fighting for them! Then God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea so the waters would flow back over the gyptians. Moses obeyed and the gyptians were swept into the sea, and not one of them survived. When the sraelites saw the great power God displayed against the gyptians, they feared God and put their trust in him and in Moses. Have the children line up side by side. Stand in front of them and hold up your staff. Tell them to pretend to look into the sea and tell them to imagine all of the gyptians being covered up by the walls of water. Have them get down on their knees and thank God for protecting them and helping them to escape. Share and Tell God did so many amazing things to lead and protect his people. Who can remember the ways God used his power? (led the people by a pillar of cloud and fire; opened the ed Sea so the people could cross on dry ground; closed the sea over the gyptian army) Moses was a great leader because he believed and obeyed God. Think of all the people that Moses helped to cross the ed Sea There were thousands and thousands! God wants to use you also to help people today to learn about him. Can you think of some people that you could tell this amazing ible Story to? et the children respond. Close with a prayer thanking God for his power to lead and protect his people. Teacher Tips A sheet or towel draped around your shoulders will give you a simple Moses costume. et the children see your awe and amazement about what God did to open the ed Sea! 5 C A F T xodus Just Passing Through The children will make a craft that reminds them of how powerfully God used Moses to lead srael out of gypt. Materials For each child: 1 triangular piece of sandpaper, 3" x 3" x 4 1 /2" crayons or markers white glue 1 cotton swab For the teacher: scissors eproducible Pages: Page, 1 copy for each child Preparation 1. Cut out the squares on the copies of eproducible Page for the children. 2. Cut along the designated line between sections A and, as shown in Figure A. 3. Prepare the pieces of triangular sandpaper. 4. Make a sample of this craft to show the children. nstructions 1. ntroduce today s activity: n this week s lesson, you are learning about the powerful way that God led the people of srael out of gypt. God used Moses to open the ed Sea! God made the waters stand up like two walls so that the people could walk across the middle of the sea on dry ground! God used his amazing power to help the people escape from the gyptians. n your craft today, you will imagine what it might have looked like to walk through the ed Sea. 2. Show the children the craft you prepared. Tell them that this display can help them to imagine what it might have been like to walk through the ed Sea with the walls of water on either side. ead the Scripture Memory Verse at the bottom to the children. 3. Distribute the squares that you prepared, the crayons, and cotton swabs. Tell the children to color in their pictures, suggesting they use blue and green for the walls of water, and brown for the dry ground. 4. When they have finished coloring their pictures, show them how to create fold lines by folding their squares in half diagonally (both ways), as shown in Figure. 5. Have them open their squares and place side A underneath side, as shown in Figure C. Place a very small amount of glue on side A and have the children spread it out with the cotton swab, and then press down side on top of it. 6. Distribute the sandpaper to the children. Place a small amount of glue in the designated corner of side and have the children spread it out with their cotton swabs. Have them place the sandpaper over the glue, as shown in Figure D. Tell the children to be careful not to cover the Scripture Memory Verse with the sandpaper. 7. Tell the children to write their names on their crafts and set them aside for the glue to dry. Conclusion ncourage the children to show their craft to someone and tell the story of how God led the sraelites out of slavery in gypt. Close with a prayer praising God for his amazing power and for helping Moses to have great faith.
