The Hebrew word Chanukah shares the same root as the word Chinuch-education. During Chanukah, we focus our attention on educating our children about the strength of our people. They learn how the weak can overcome the mighty, how the few can be victorious over the many, and how the righteous will ultimately win over the hearts of the wicked. In the story of Chanukah, the occupying Greek forces were determined to force Hellenism upon the Jewish population; unfortunately, they were quite successful in their endeavor. After the Greeks were defeated, it was necessary to reeducate the Jews; to reintroduce a large part of the population to Torah values, thus the strong link between Chanukah and education. Never throughout history has there been a nation that has put more importance on education then the Jewish people, this high regarded value is rooted in our very beginnings when G-d tells us why He loved Abraham: Because he commands his children and his household after him that they keep the way of G-d, doing charity and justice. From all of Abraham s great and worldly ideological and humanitarian achievements, G-d chose him for one reason only, because he is a good father who educates his children. The Torah`s axiom of Adam etz hasadeh Man is like a tree analogy, conveys that educating our children is a lifelong task and it begins mainly by planting seeds. During Chanukah we plant many seeds. My father used to give me $20 as Chanukah Gelt but this gift came with a condition that I must give 10% to Tzaddakah. For me It was a great deal - I give $2 to charity and keep $18. After many years, two principles were transmitted, 1) give 2) give with a light heart and with joy. These are the seeds that are planted in every ritual of Chanukah from the letters of the draidel, to the stillness of the candle, to the ever increasing light of the Menorah. Education is not just conveying information, but inspiring within a child a sense of what they can ultimately be. Our job as parents must be to plant, nourish and enable. The fruits will come. This is the ultimate lesson of Chanukah - to ignite even just a small cruze of oil, and the rest entrust to the miraculous hands of G-d. Rabbi's Message THE COURAGE TO EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN Chanukah was the first time in history that a people had fought not for their country or their lives, but for their beliefs and their right to religious observance. The holiday challenges us to look within ourselves and find heroism and determination through spiritual courage. Unlike all other Jewish holidays that we celebrate with feasts, surrounded by family and friends, indulging ourselves in the sacramental foods of challah, wine, and special holiday delicacies, this holiday is celebrated through light. Its moving songs, bright candles, and inspiring stories move us to reflect on our own spirituality and that of our children. I write this note coming off the spiritual high my family and I experienced with the Bar Mitzvah of our son, Yacov Dovid. It was a day that will forever be etched in our minds and hearts. Lieba and I are grateful that so many of you were able to witness and join us at our special Simcha. Yacov, in a very surprising and fearless way, gave us so much Nachas. Standing proudly as a Jew taking on the Mitzvot of the Torah, Yacov, you lit up the entire Congregation, Kol hakavod! A special blessing of strength and success to our new lay and professional leadership. Our President Arnold Cohen and his new Executive are working hard to make a real difference, Beruchim Habaim to our new Executive Director Alice Geiger and Sarah Miller, administrative assistant. It is my hope that the new leadership will infuse our Synagogue with vitality and enable The Chevra to be a force of good and a guiding light to our members and community. Lieba and I extend to each and every one of you our heartfelt wishes for a bright and inspiring Chanukah coupled with the fulfillment of your hearts desires for good in every respect. May we all have our lives illuminated by this Chanukah. Rabbi Asher and Lieba Jacobson ADDREss If you would like to be part of the Rabbi's list, please send your address to Rabbi@ckbj.org 2 3

3 Even though your new Board of Trustees and Executive were only elected just before the High Holidays, we are already hard at work. Just like any house or building, we need to ensure that your shul has a strong foundation, and that foundation is its office and professional team. Accordingly, the first act of the new Board was to approve the hire of our new Executive Director, Alys Geiger. She brings with her a wealth of experience working with nonprofit organizations, including as Executive Director of Dorshei Emet (the Reconstructionist synagogue). We are privileged to have her with us and welcome her to The Chevra mishpacha. Our first order of business is to review our professional team and systems, to ensure that we are working to serve you as efficiently and skillfully as we can. After some 40 years with the shul, Kathy Gardos has retired, and we thank her again for all that she has done for us. We have already engaged Sara Miller to help in the office. Sara may be known to some of you for her assistance with synagogue events, but she now joins us in a fulltime capacity as Events and Social Media Coordinator, with special emphasis on membership relations and communications. As far as communications are concerned, we realize that many of you are not getting the weekly bulletins on Erev Shabbat by , and we have already began working diligently to migrate to a new communications software package. If you want to ensure receipt of the bulletin, please contact the office and provide us with your address and other appropriate contact information. Please also check our Facebook page and our improving website for news and announcements at I hope that all of you enjoyed the chagim in the shul as much as I did. From the high holidays through Sukkot, the shul sparkled, the Rabbi, Chazzan and choir dazzled and inspired us, and we enjoyed being in each other s company. This carried forward through to the Rabbi s son s magnificent Bar Mitzvah simcha - mazel tov again Yakov and the entire Jacobson family! President's Message Like many of you, I was not a regular shul-goer. It was only this year, following the sudden passing of my father, that I found myself regularly attending morning minyan and Shabbat services. I can only say that for whatever reason might compel you to attend services from time to time, be it to say kaddish, honour a yahrzeit, or just because you want to re-connect with your yiddishkeit, you will find the shul to be a welcoming and warm place that is not judgmental of your practices, beliefs or background. In a very short time, I have built heartfelt friendships, established a close bond with the Rabbi and Chazzan, and found the time spent in services to be meaningful and personally fulfilling. My goal as your President is to ensure that the shul remains a haimish place that is welcoming to all that seek its benefits, and that we can provide you with an enjoyable blend of programs and events, both cultural and religious. I anticipate we will be off to a good start with our upcoming Night of the Senses evening on December 16. The primary objective of this event is to bring the shul community together, on the first night of Chanukah, for an evening of l chaims, friendship and good times while offering you the opportunity to purchase Jewish artwork, a loge for a Habs game and other unique gifts. I hope that you will share the evening with us once your family s latkes have been sampled and your Chanukah gelt has been distributed to your loved ones. We are now in the midst of planning a new array of programs, classes and shabbatons, so please stay tuned for more details as they become available. Please feel free to contact me, the office or the clergy with any thoughts or suggestions you might have. In the meantime, on a personal note, I want to thank you all for the enthusiasm, kindness and support you have shown me and the entire Board and Executive as we endeavor to live up to your expectations for the shul. I wish you all a Happy Chanukah, and a warm, safe and fun winter! Despite the threatening weather, the sun shone through long enough for us to gather in the Sukkah. Our Rabbi Jacobson started the program with an inspiring D var Torah about the temporary shelter in the desert and the shelter today in Auberge Shalom for destitute and suffering women. After everyone had the chance to have the mitzvah of Lulov and Etrog, a delicious lunch prepared by our esteemed Cantor was enjoyed by all. Next we heard a lecture by Simcha Fine, the last of her lectures over the past year, this one entitled The Extra Mile Tools for Implementing Lasting Change. Everyone agreed it was a wonderful and meaningful event. Please note that our next event will be on April 29, when we will have guest speaker Alison Pick, author of Between G-ds a novel that traces the author s discovery of her Jewish roots and her conversion to Judaism. 5 Shana Tova Umetoukah Rosh Hashanah 2014/5775 What a nice way to extend good wishes for the New Year, Shana Tova Umetoukah, a Happy Sweet New Year. That is exactly what the Chevra Chesed Committee did, extended our best wishes to our dear seniors in residence, seniors at home and those that are ill. A week before Rosh Hashana members of the Chevra Chesed Committee gathered in the Singerman Auditorium to prepare gifts for our members. Colorful gift bags with tissue paper and ribbon, personalized greeting cards, together with delicious honey cakes were prepared for delivery. The chatter and laughter was music to our ears, everyone was having a great time doing this Mitzvah of Chesed. As the day progressed, volunteers were happily picking up their gift bags for delivery, within a few days, all the gifts were delivered and everyone was so pleased. The feedback was great. Calls from recipients, and family members of the recipients, were coming in to thank the Chevra Chesed Committee for the thoughtfulness, caring and kindness that was extended. We achieved our objective of bringing a spark of joy to these people. As it is said in Tehillim, Ivdou et Hashem BeSimcha... (Serve Hashem with Happiness) that is what the Chevra Chesed Committee did, we did this Mitzvah of Chesed with Happiness and it was felt by all. A hearty Yasher Koach Thank you to all the Chesed volunteers who participated: Hilda Adler, Terri Allister, Elaine Budning, Belle Burak, Cantor Yitzhak Epstein, Joyce Fishman, Erdvin & Kathy Gardos, Doreen Green, Clara Pinda, Marvin & Iona Redler, David Silverstone, Jack Starke and his grand-daughter Amber. In the merit of this Mitzvah may you be blessed with a warm and healthy winter, with a great deal of happiness. Marsha Epstein, Chair Chevra Chesed Committee Hold the Date Purim with Chesed Preparation of Mishloach Manot Baskets March 2, :00 a.m. Pick up & Delivery Starting at Beit Hazikaron Part of blessings recited during Chanukah upon lighting the candles is "She-asha nissim la'avotrinu bayamim hahem bazman haze." "Who makes miracles to our fathers in those days at this time." Although, "at this time" in liberal translation refers to the historical time when the miracle was performed by G'd, I would like to give it a meaning "bazman haze" in present time. Do we ever need miracles in our days. Things happening around us would make one expect the worst to come. Yet we are Jews and therefore our traditions, like Chanukah, and immense feeling of hope will sustain us till the end of time. Our little Hungarian speaking group is still ticking. The Chevra remembered of the late Imre Fried Z'L during November 15th Kiddush, facilitated by his daughters. Rabbi Jacobson's remarks were well deserved, as Mr.Fried was an exceptional member of both CKBJ and B.H for many decades The timing for closing our 7-8 months activities was perfect. It's cold and wintry outside already. But let the Chanukah light warm you up and fill you with hope, that winter will pass soon and we will continue those nice Sunday afternoon meetings comes Spring Chag sameach Ernest Gross, Irene Romer and Andrew Sallai The Kaballah of the Tanya Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of the Chabad movement Continue the journey with Rabbi Jacobson as he explores The Tanya. 4,000 editions have been printed in every conceivable language Every Thursday 7:30 p.m. at the Chevra 5237 Clanranald Avenue All are welcome To register, ; iona@ckbj.org; or Dedicated in loving memory of Rabbi Betzalel Jacobson, Z L 8 9

6 THE HERSHEL RUDY CHILDREN S LIBRARY OFFICIALLY OPENS ONE MAN S LOVE OF BOOKS LEADS TO A HAVEN FOR YOUNG READERS To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark Victor Hugo - Les Miserables It is difficult for me to express how pleased I was and am with the actual launch and reception. It was more much more than I had anticipated. Rabbi Jacobson continued in his attempt to assure me that all would all be fine. I wasn t convinced. But everything came together and the opening was a huge success. I wish to commend Rabbi Jacobson, Cantor Epstein, Iona Redler, Jerry Sherman, Clara Pinda and Sara Miller for their help in bringing this four-year long project to fruition. Last but not least hats off to the barman, Daniel Acoca, who certainly entertained many of the guests. I hope that you and your children will get many years of enjoyment from the Library. To you and yours I wish you good health and much happiness. Joanne Kelly Rudy Rabbi Jacobson of the Chevra Kadisha and Jo Anne Kelly Rudy are pleased to announce the opening of the Hershel Rudy Children's Library on November 20, 2014, a centre devoted to young readers aged 0 to 100 and dedicated to the memory of a life-long book enthusiast. Rafael Tzoubari Honoured Outgoing President Rafael Tzoubari was honoured at the Annual General Meeting of The Chevra on September 18, 2014 for his devotion and dedication to the Shul for the past two years. Farewell To Kathy Gardos Working in a Synagogue is a multi-faceted undertaking. The days are filled with an enormous variety of tasks, running the gamut from sending invoices, processing payments and making the Congregants feel important and worthwhile. The Chevra has been very lucky for the past 40 years to have had Kathy Gardos at the helm of the office, overseeing all aspects of the workplace and garnering respect and admiration from all. The Hungarian Contingent was a perfect fit when the Beit Hazikaron became part of The Chevra family, as Kathy s first language is Hungarian. She was able to ease this transition from their Synagogue to ours. The Clergy, the Executive, the Sisterhood, the Calendar Girls, and her office colleagues all discovered that Kathy s way was the best way She knew every Congregant by name, welcomed them warmly, and had a hand in everything that transpired in Shul. Bar/ Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, events large and small, were organized by Kathy she led rehearsals for all nuptials until the Synagogue wedding co-ordinator took over that enormous task. For years, she also hand wrote each and every life-cycle event in the Shul register. This did not leave Kathy with free time; she managed to take on the Scroll and she made sure every High Holiday seat was negotiated to please the seat holders. The Clergy, Executive and staff wish Kathy a wonderful retirement, days filled with cruising with Erdvin, exercise classes and enjoying her children and grandchildren. We hope that she will visit often, preferably to help with the Scroll and Synagogue events. Pearl Rothenberg Honoured Outgoing Vice President and Board of Trustees member was honoured at the Annual General Meeting of The Chevra held on September 18, 2014 for her many years of outstanding leadership at the Synagogue

7 This year we begin the Chanukah holiday with the lighting of the first Chanukah candle on Tuesday evening December 16, 2014 after 3:52 p.m. Before proceeding to light the Chanukah candles, we first light the shamash servant candle, and recite the following blessings: Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha olam Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe asher kidishanu b mitz votav v tzivanu Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us l had lik neir shel Chanukah. (Amein) to light the lights of Chanukkah. Blessing for Chanukkah Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha olam Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe she asah nisim la avoteinu bayamim haheim baziman hazeh. Who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time Shehecheyanu (first night only) Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha olam Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe Chanukah commemorates an oil-based miracle which explains why we eat oily foods to commemorate it. Some eat fried potato pancakes, a.k.a latkes, while others eat sufganiyot deep-fried doughnuts. Some eat both. Most survive the holiday. Yes, food can be dangerous. One of the greatest Maccabeean victories was the result of feeding the enemy cheese so we also eat dairy foods on Chanukah. Chanukah Gelt: During Chanukah it is customary to give gelt (money) to children, so that we can teach them to give some of it to tzedakah and just to keep things festive and happy. Some have the admirable custom of gelt-giving each week night of Chanukah. Dreidel (Sevivon): The Greek oppressors outlawed Torah schools, so the children would study in the forests, posting a sentry to alert them of Greek patrols. When the alert came, the children would hide their texts and start playing with dreidels (spinning tops). We, too, play dreidel games on Chanukah to commemorate the courage of these heroic children. The four Hebrew letters on the dreidel are an acronym for Nes Gadol Haya Sham a great miracle happened there. So playing dreidel keeps us mindful of the Chanukah miracles even during fun and games. The Prayers: Each day of Chanukah we thank G-d by reciting the complete Hallel in the morning prayer service. We also insert a special prayer of thanksgiving, V al Hanissim, in the Amidah prayer and Bircat HaMazon. Every morning we read from the Torah about the inauguration offerings brought in honor of the dedication of the Tabernacle reminiscent of the Maccabeean rededication of the defiled Temple, the Chanukat HaBayit. Shabbat Chanukah: On Friday afternoon December 19, light the menorah before lighting the Shabbat candles. The Friday night Chanukah candles must burn for at least 1½ hours so you may need more oil or larger candles. On Saturday night, light the menorah after dark at 5:04 p.m., after the Havdallah ceremony. The Chevra Cordially invites all our members and friends to the Annual Festive Service of Shabbat Shira Sabbath of Song Shabbat Morning January 31, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. Featuring Cantor Yitzhak Epstein and our inspirational Synagogue Choir under the direction of Choirmaster Yossi Milo Under the Spiritual Leadership of Rabbi Asher Jacobson shehecheyanu v kiyimanu v higi anu laz man hazeh. 8 THE CHEVRA PRESENTS: A SHABBAT OF GROWTH TU B SHEVAT 5775 Join us for a memorable Shabbat your whole family will enjoy. Celebrate trees SHABBAT MORNING YOUTH LED SERVICES FEBRUARY 7, 2015, AT 9:00 A.M. Kiddush following HAPPY PURIM Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were miraculously saved from mass murder. The story of Purim is told in the Biblical book of Esther. The heroes of the story are Esther, a beautiful young Jewish woman living in Persia, and her cousin Mordechai, who raised her as if she were his daughter. Esther was taken to the house of Achashverus, King of Persia, to become part of his harem, and he loved her more than his other women and made her queen. But the king did not know that Esther was a Jew, because Mordechai told her not to reveal her identity. The villain of the story is Haman, an arrogant, egotistical advisor to the king. Haman, a descendant of Amalek, hated Mordechai because Mordechai refused to bow down to Haman, so Haman plotted to destroy the Jewish people. In a speech that is all too familiar to Jews, Haman told the king, There is a certain people dispersed and scattered among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom whose customs are different from those of all other people and who do not obey the king's laws; it is not in the king's best interest to tolerate them. If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them. Esther 3:8. The king gave the fate of the Jewish people to Haman, to do as he pleased to them. Haman planned to murder all of the Jews. Mordechai persuaded Esther to speak to the king on behalf of the Jewish people. This was a dangerous thing for Esther to do, because anyone who came into the king's presence without being summoned could be put to death, and she had not been summoned. Esther fasted for three days to prepare herself, and then went to confront the king. He welcomed her. Later, she told him of Haman's plot against her people. The Jewish people were saved, and Haman was hanged on the gallows that had been prepared for Mordechai. The book of Esther is unusual in that it is the only book of the Tanach that does not contain the name of G-d. In fact, it includes virtually no reference to G-d. Mordechai makes a vague reference to the fact that the Jews will be saved by someone else, if not by Esther, but that is the closest the book comes to mentioning G-d. Thus, one important message that can be gained from the story is that G-d often works in ways that are not apparent, in ways that appear to be chance, coincidence or ordinary good luck. Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar, which this year is on Thursday March 5th. The 14th of Adar is the day that Haman chose for the mass murder of the Jews. In the time of Joshua, Purim is celebrated on the 15th of the month, because the book of Esther says that in Shushan (a walled city), deliverance from the massacre was not complete until the next day. The word Purim means lots and refers to the lottery that Haman used to choose the date for the massacre. The Purim holiday is preceded by a minor fast, the Fast of Esther, this year on Wednesday March 4th, which commemorates Esther's three days of fasting in preparation for her meeting with the king. The primary commandment related to Purim is to hear the reading of the book of Esther twice. The book of Esther is commonly known as the Megillah, which means Scroll. Although there are five books of Jewish scripture that are properly referred to as megillahs (Esther, Ruth, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Lamentations), this is the one people usually mean when they speak of The Megillah. It is customary to boo, hiss, stamp feet and rattle gragers (noisemakers) whenever the name of Haman is mentioned in the service. The purpose of this custom is to blot out the name of Haman. We are also commanded to eat, drink and be joyous. According to the Talmud, a person is required to drink until he cannot tell the difference between cursed be Haman and blessed be Mordechai, though opinions differ as to exactly how drunk that is. In addition, we are commanded to send out gifts of food or drink, and to make gifts to charity. The sending of gifts of food and drink is referred to as shalach manot (literally sending out portions). Among Ashkenazic Jews, a common treat at Purim is hamentaschen (literally Haman's pockets). These triangular fruit-filled cookies are supposed to represent Haman's three-cornered hat. It is customary to hold carnival-like celebrations on Purim, to perform plays and parodies, and to hold beauty contests. Work is permitted as usual on Purim, unless of course it falls on a Shabbat. FAsT OF AsARA B TEVET Thursday, January 1, 2015 The Fast of the Tenth of Tevet commemorates the date on which Nebuchadnezzar began his siege of Jerusalem three years before its fall in 568 B.C.E. The fast day was established by the prophets and is mentioned in the Tanach (Zecharia 8:9). Since the fast begins at dawn (an hour and one-quarter before sunrise) and occurs during winter, it is the shortest fast of the year. It commences at 6:02 a.m. and ends at 4:45 p.m. TU B shevat Tu B'Shevat, or the 15th of the month of Shevat, is "The New Year of the Trees". This year it occurs on Wednesday February 4, It is the "New Year" basically in reference to the different tithes which are separated from the fruit each year in Eretz Yisroel and dispensed variously to the Levites, to the poor, and for usage in Jerusalem. Only fruit grown during the course of one year can be used as tithes for the rest of the fruit grown that year, but not for fruit grown in a previous or a future year. Our sages of the Mishnah have designated the 15th of Shevat as the cutoff date between one year and another, since most of the rains of the previous year have already fallen. Any growth after this day is a result of the blessings of the new year. Since Tu B'Shevat marks the renewal of growth in the land of Israel, Jews rejoice on this day and express their solidarity with the people of Israel. It is customary on this day to eat fruit which come from Israel and which are associated in the Bible with the Holy Land, such as dates, figs, grapes and pomegranates. There is also a custom on this day to eat a new fruit of a kind which one has not yet eaten in the present year in order to recite "Shechecheyanu", the Blessing that we may be sustained to reach this occasion. THANK YOU TO HIGH HOLIDAY USHERS Sincerest thanks are extended to Allan Tannenbaum, Jerry Sherman and Paul Kushner for devoting much of their time in organizing the High Holiday Aliyas. To the following ushers: Mish Granik, Manny Fayer, your dedication, time and efforts are greatly appreciated. Snowbirds, Fare Thee Well Go in peace and return in peace It's that time of the year again when our snowbirds opt in favour of winter nesting grounds in sunnier climates. Although our snowbirds will be sorely missed at the synagoue until spring when, G-d willing, they will all come roaring back. We can feel comfortable in the knowledge that they will be in good hands at synagogues in places like Miami Beach, Hallandale, Boca Raton, Palm Beach and, of course Israel. We wish each and every one of them, a safe trip and good health over their winter sojourn and will be looking forward to seeing them at the Synagogue soon. HOLD THE DATE The Chevra Sisterhood 5237 Clanranald Ave. Invites you, your family and friends to their book review on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 2015 AT 7:30 P.M. When ALISON PICK Will review her award winning book BETWEEN GODS Between Gods is that rare memoir brilliantly well written... profoundly moving... a beautifully woven story of family, partnership, love and reconciliation not just with one s past but with oneself. As far as Pick knew, both her parents were Christian -- growing up in Kitchener, Ont., her family only celebrated Easter and Christmas. But what she discovered after prodding her parents for answers was that her paternal grandparents were in fact Jewish, escaping the former Czechoslovakia on the heels of Nazi occupation during the Second World War and masking their heritage with new Christian identities when they settled in Canada. Dessert reception will follow Please call the office at to make your reservation 20 21
