1 SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON The Captivity NEHEMIAH REBUILDS THE WALL Elementary Lesson Year Two, Quarter Two, Lesson 13 AIM: to use the story of Nehemiah to teach my class what to do when they hear bad news OBJECTS TO HAVE: A postcard A beautiful cup A trowel and/or a hammer A sword A wall Your Bible POINT OF CONTACT: How many of you have ever received a postcard? Usually a postcard says something like this: It s beautiful here! The weather is great! We re having a great time! Wish you were here! And on the front the postcard will have a picture of some exciting place or some beautiful place where the person who sent you the postcard has visited. The great thing about a postcard is that it almost never contains bad news. Usually a postcard is happy news from a far-away place. But the truth is, from time to time all of us may receive bad news from a far-away place. None of us likes to receive bad news. And bad news always seems worse when it comes from some place far away, because we wish we could be there to help and to encourage the people who are suffering. Today I am going to tell you about someone who received bad news from a far-away place, and what he did about it. STORY: For weeks now I have told you about a period in the history of Israel known as the captivity. The captivity was a time when the people of Israel, because of their sin, were taken from the land of Israel, and forced to live in a far-away place. They lived there for 70 years. During that time the people grew old and most of them died. But children were born to them in that far-away place. To them, this far-away place seemed like home. But their mommies and daddies taught them that, no, this is not your home. Your home is in Jerusalem, their parents told them, and some day you are going to get to go back and live in your home, Jerusalem. So to them, home was a far-away place. Finally the seventy years of captivity were ended. As we learned last Sunday, the new king, King Cyrus, sent many of the Jews back to their homeland of Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple. When the rebuilding of the Temple was completed, they continued to live in Jerusalem with their families, and they began to rebuild the nation of Israel. Of course, many of the Jewish people continued to live back in Babylon. Some people, for example, had jobs working for the king, and they and their families were not able to leave when the captivity ended. One of these people who had not been permitted to leave was a man named Nehemiah. Nehemiah had a very important job in the land. Nehemiah was a cupbearer. A cupbearer was a man who worked for the king. The cupbearer s job was to serve the king all of his food, and to drink from every cup and eat a bite from every bit of food that he served the king. Why? Because there were some people who hated the king and wanted him dead. Those people might try to kill the king by putting poison in his food. The cupbearer s job was to taste the food while the king was watching, so that if the king s food was poisoned, the cupbearer would die instead of the king. That was Nehemiah s job. Another part of Nehemiah s job was to always be happy when he served the king his food. The king wanted to enjoy his meal, and he could not enjoy his meal if his cupbearer was in a bad mood. If Nehemiah was in a bad mood when he served the king, Nehemiah could be put to death. One day, Nehemiah received a visit. The visit was from some of Nehemiah s friends. Nehemiah s friends had been among those who had been allowed to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple. The Temple project had been completed, and now the people in Jerusalem were trying to get their lives back to normal. But things were not going as well as they had hoped. The people back in Jerusalem were very discouraged. They were living scared. Any time a band of thieves came riding by, they would stop in Jerusalem and hurt anybody they wanted to hurt and steal

2 anything they wanted to steal. Why? Because the walls of Jerusalem were broken down, and the gates were destroyed. The people had no protection from their enemies. All of the people who lived around Jerusalem would laugh at them because they were so poor, weak, and helpless. When Nehemiah s friends visited Nehemiah and told him this sad news, Nehemiah began to weep. Nehemiah mourned and fasted and prayed for days. Nehemiah said, Lord, I know that we have sinned, and that is why we were in this captivity; but you promised that if we would turn our hearts to you, you would save us. Oh Lord God, forgive me, and forgive us; and grant us mercy in the sight of the king. During those days that Nehemiah wept and prayed and fasted, he continued to do his job as the king s cupbearer. Though Nehemiah s heart was heavy, he tried very hard to do his job right. But the king noticed that Nehemiah was upset. The king asked Nehemiah what was wrong. Nehemiah told the king his problem, how he had heard from some friends back home in Jerusalem that the walls of Jerusalem were broken down. When Nehemiah was finished explaining the problem, he waited nervously for the king s answer. After a few moments of silence, the king finally responded. To Nehemiah s complete surprise the king asked, What can I do to help? Since Nehemiah did not know that the king was going to ask this, he did not have his answer ready. Right away Nehemiah prayed and said, Lord, help me know what to ask for. Then Nehemiah said, King, I request that you would let me go and fix the wall; and give me a letter of permission, letting everybody know that you have said that we can fix the wall; and allow me to take wood from your forest to rebuild the walls. Then Nehemiah waited for the answer. He could not believe it when the king said yes to everything that Nehemiah had requested!! Nehemiah and some men went to Jerusalem and began the work of rebuilding the wall. Have you ever seen a man working on a special building project? Have you ever see a man wearing a tool belt while he is working? What does a worker usually have in his tool belt? A hammer? A measuring tape? A knife? Some nails? Some screwdrivers? Well, these men carried some tools that were very different from any worker you ve ever seen. Every man who worked on the wall had a tool in his hand and on his side he carried a sword! Why? Because some of Israel s enemies heard about this great building project, and they wanted it to stop. They attacked them as they worked, so when the enemy attacked, the workers put their tools down, and pulled their swords out to fight. They would fight off the enemies, and when the enemies ran away, they would put the swords away, pick up the tools, and go back to work. These were dedicated men! After much opposition, these men finally finished the wall around Jerusalem. There was a great time of revival and rejoicing when the wall was completed. God s people and God s enemies knew that God had done a great work for His people. When you receive bad news, or when you find that you are discouraged, do the same thing that Nehemiah did: 1. He prayed. Nehemiah didn t know what to do, so he prayed. He prayed for several days. Then when he had to make an important decision, he prayed again, right on the spot. When you face a problem, go to God first and say, God, I need your help! Show me what to do! 2. He got his heart right with God. Nehemiah didn t blame anyone else. He told God, I have sinned, and I ask you to forgive me. If you want God to solve your problem, you must be sure that your heart is right with God, that there is no hidden sin in your life, and that you are willing to do whatever God wants you to do. 3. He got busy. He said, I ve got to do something about it. Nehemiah said, I can make a difference. Don t complain about how bad things are if you are not willing to do something about it. Too many people sit around feeling sorry for themselves, complaining about all of their problems, when they should be busy DOING something to fix their problems. 4. When the victory came, he gave God the credit. Nehemiah knew that it was God who had done this great work. When God helps you to solve a problem, make sure you take time to stop and think about what God did for you, and let God know how thankful you are that He fixed your problem. Nehemiah is one of the greatest examples in the Bible of a man who made a difference in a very difficult time. Will you let God use you like Nehemiah let God use him? Let s learn our memory verse. Psalm 68:1 Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.

3 NEHEMIAH REBUILDS THE WALL Teen and Adult Lesson Year Two, Quarter Two, Lesson 13 SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON The Captivity Teacher, choose one of the following truths to expand upon in teaching this portion of Scripture to your teen/adult class. Teach and apply the truth that you choose using statements and illustrations that are most helpful and applicable to your students. I. WE OUGHT TO HAVE A BURDEN FOR SUFFERING PEOPLE. 1:1-4. Nehemiah was safe and secure in his position as the king s cupbearer in Babylon. When he received word about the plight of the people in Jerusalem, he could have easily decided that it was not his problem. But it was not Nehemiah s nature to turn a deaf ear to people who were hurting, especially the people of his own nation. Nehemiah could not do nothing. A child of God must have the same heart that Nehemiah had; we must allow our hearts to be burdened for people in need. II. PRAYER IS OUR FIRST COURSE OF ACTION. 1:5-11. There was no immediate solution for the people of Jerusalem, especially no solution that was in Nehemiah s power to carry out. Yet he did immediately take the problem to God in prayer. It is not wrong to find yourself in the position where you feel helpless to make a difference. But when we think there is nothing we can do, we can ALWAYS take the need to God in prayer. Prayer is always the right first step in any crisis or need. III. GOD CAN WORK IN THE HEARTS OF PEOPLE TO ASSIST US IN ACCOMPLISHING HIS PURPOSES. 2:1-8. Nehemiah might not have expected the king to offer his help in solving the problem in Jerusalem. Nehemiah didn t ask the king for his help. But when Nehemiah prayed, God put it in the king s heart to ask Nehemiah how he could help. When a need arises, God can touch the hearts of people whose help we might never expect. He will do so when we pray earnestly as Nehemiah did. IV. WHEN WE SET OUT TO DO GOD S WORK WE CAN EXPECT SOME PEOPLE TO OPPOSE US AND SOME PEOPLE TO SUPPORT US IN THE WORK. 2:9-20. As Nehemiah took the first few steps in carrying out this project, we are immediately told of one group of men who OPPOSED Nehemiah, and of another group of men who JOINED Nehemiah in his effort. Both of these groups will always exist, and they will reveal themselves as soon as we get busy for God. We should not be alarmed at the opposition, nor should we hesitate to let willing, sincere people help us. V. WHEN OPPOSITION ARISES, DO NOT ABANDON THE WORK OF GOD TO COME DOWN TO THE LEVEL OF YOUR ACCUSERS. 6:1-14. Nehemiah s enemies tried many different schemes to try and stop the work. Each time Nehemiah s response was the same: I will stay focused on the work that God has called me to do. It is very easy to be distracted by our critics, but when we do so we are enabling the enemies of God s work to be successful
