3 Leadership Jewish Disability Awareness Month Rabbi Janice Mehring February is Jewish Disability Awareness Month. There was a time when there were many barriers for disabled people s full inclusion in Jewish life even though our tradition teaches that God s house is open to all people - not just to those that can walk through the door, hear the prayers unassisted, or see the siddur. I am happy to report that we as a Jewish community at large have made great strides over the past 10 years this month s observance was started. Leviticus 19:14 teaches, Do not curse a person who is deaf and do not place a stumbling block in front of a person who is blind. Thanks to the generosity of Mary Bianco and our most recent adult B not Mitzvah group (Mary Bianco, Naomi Blakely, Joan Bloomfield and Frieda Russell), we now have a new digital projector and audio system in our synagogue. Donations to the temple in their honor upgraded these systems, a donation that directly speaks to the mitzvah/ commandment from Leviticus. The sound quality and volume is equal whether you are sitting in the front row or the last. But it only works if we use it. Because the new system is so user friendly, I encourage all service and program leaders to use it regularly. Let February be our time to reenergize our commitment to the rights of all people to be included in our Jewish community. Change your thinking. Instead of doing things for people with disabilites, do them with people with disabilities. We look forward to the day when all obstacles are eliminated for full inclusion in Jewish life. On that day, we will truly know the meaning of B tzelem Elohim. Because we are all created in the image of God, each one of us is inherently valued and holy regardless of our abilities. Highlights from the Board 1. Financials are in great shape. 2. Israel March 2019 with Rabbi Janice, is shaping up. There will be a group meeting soon. 3. Look for reviews of kosher wine in the future in the bulletin. 4. Sukkah is 100% complete, including lights, which are also now installed in the storage shed.

4 COT in January Rabbi Janice, it gives Jerome and I, great pleasure to make a special presentation to you, on behalf of our COT family. We all wanted to give you something special for your new home, so we asked Rabbi Rabinowitz who recommended Charles Sherman an artist from the valley who has his art pieces displayed in a number of places including Cedar-Sinai in Los Angeles, Golda Meir Center in Denver Colorado, and the San Diego Museum of art to name a few.
