3 Junior Learner s Manual June 1, 2014 The Sale of a Birthright Lesson Objective Bible Principle Parallel Passage I will know the relationship between Jacob and Esau. One must always be kind, honest and patient in sibling relationships. Start at Home 1 Timothy 5:4 Memory Verse: Let them learn first to shew piety at home... for that is good and acceptable before God. The Birthright and the Blessing 1 Timothy 5:4 Genesis 25:24-34; 27:18-25, 30-35, Isaac and Rebekah became parents of twins, Esau and Jacob. The firstborn would inherit a double portion of his father s estate, or birthright, and become head of the family at the father s death. God told Rebekah before her sons birth that Esau, the firstborn, would serve Jacob, the younger son. Jacob s name means supplanter, or trickster. Esau, loved by his father, was an outdoorsman. He was strong-willed but weak at other times. Jacob, loved by his mother, was a homebody. When Esau was hungry after a hunting trip, Jacob offered him a bowl of pottage (bean soup or stew) in exchange for his birthright. Esau was so hungry he agreed to give Jacob his birthright for the pottage. When he was old, Isaac sent Esau to kill a deer and cook it for him. He was going to give Esau his blessing. Rebekah heard the plan and plotted with Jacob to deceive Isaac. Isaac s blessing gave Jacob the best of everything in life, the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth. Esau was angry and bitter because Jacob had deceived his father, Isaac, and received the blessing Esau should have received. Esau begged his father for a blessing, but Isaac could only make Esau a servant of Jacob. Esau wanted to kill Jacob, but Rebekah discovered how angry he was with Jacob. She sent Jacob to live with his uncle, Laban. God did not approve of Jacob s lying, cheating and stealing. He wants His people to live a moral life. Moral is relating to right and wrong character judgments. God told the truth about people in the Bible. He does not want us to mistreat our siblings. 3 Lesson 1

4 It seems there was a rivalry between Esau and Jacob as they grew up. Esau was the oldest and could inherit two-thirds of his father s belongings. Esau sold his birthright to Jacob. Jacob took Esau s blessing through lying and trickery. These actions caused trouble between them even as adults. Today, their descendants, the Arabs and the Jews, still have not settled their disputes. Write the answers to the questions about Esau and Jacob. 1. What did Esau sell when he sold his birthright? 2. What was the blessing Jacob stole from Esau? 3. How were Jacob s actions being unkind and dishonest with his brother? 4. What were some results of Jacob s getting Esau s birthright and blessing? 5 God expects you to treat your siblings fairly. The nature to sin within you will often encourage you to speak unkind words, be selfish or maybe hateful in your actions. At such times, it will be needful for you to make a choice to treat a brother or sister with love.
