[ VICTORIES OF GOD IN THE LIFE OF JOSHUA LESSON NINE Day One As usual, begin this time with prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to lead you in your studies. Read Joshua 4:1 24, and then answer the following questions. 1. What instructions did the Lord give Joshua regarding the twelve men who were first mentioned last week? 2. Why were the men to do this (verses 6 7)? 3. Verse 9 mentions another twelve stones. What do we read about these? 4. When did the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant cross over, according to verses 10 11? 5. Verse 12 mentions the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Mannaseh crossing over. Why are they listed specifically? (Do you remember?) 6. How did this day affect the rest of Joshua s life, according to verse 14? 1
7. What happened when the priests came up out of the riverbed? 8. When the children and grandchildren of those who crossed over would ask them about the monument they erected at Gilgal, what was to be their answer? Scripture Memory: This week s Scripture Memory is 1 Corinthians 10:13. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV Day Two Reread Joshua 4: Ecclesiastes 3:5 says there is a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones. This was obviously a time to gather stones. God commanded the Israelites to set up memorial stones to commemorate this miraculous event. In the same way, there are spiritual accomplishments, victories, and miracles in the life of every Christian that should be commemorated. Why does God want us to remember these things? Why should we set up memorial stones in our lives? So that we don t relapse into past sins, but instead move forward, encouraged by the reminder that God has brought us this far. As a testimony to others that God can accomplish great and mighty things. To glorify God, placing the credit where it is due. What memorial stones are found along your path as a Christian? Write at least one below. 2. Remembering is important. Let s look at some of the things we are instructed to remember in Scripture. 2
1 Chronicles 16:12, 15 Exodus 20:8 Job 7:7a or Psalm 89:47 Job 36:24 Ecclesiastes 12:1 Luke 17:32 33 John 15:20 3. Read Luke 22: In your own words, relate what you read there to the passage we have been studying today (Joshua 4). 3
Scripture Memory: Fill in the missing words from memory. No has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are, but with the temptation will also make the way of, that you may be able to bear it. Corinthians 10:13 Day Three 1. The priests carrying the Ark were the first ones in the Jordan and the last ones out. In the same way, Jesus is our protection both before and behind us. What do these verses say? Psalm 139:5 Isaiah 52:12 Exodus 14:19 2. The priests remained in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished. (Joshua 4:10) God does not leave things half-done. He finished what He starts. What does this mean for you? Philippians 1:6 Hebrews 12:2 Psalm 138:8 4
1 Thessalonians 5: Peter 5:10 Scripture Memory: Fill in the missing words from memory. No has overtaken you except such as is to man; but God is, who will not allow you to be beyond what you are, but with the temptation will also make the way of, that you may be able to it. Corinthians 10: Day Four 1. Read the parable found in Luke 19: What happened to the two men who were faithful with their master s money? What happened to the man who was not faithful with his master s money? 2. How does Luke 16:10 summarize this principle? 3. Now reread Joshua 4:14. How does this principle apply in Joshua s life? How was Joshua described before this point, in Exodus 33:11 and Joshua 1:1? 5
4. What did Jesus say in Matthew 20:26 27? Scripture Memory: Fill in the missing words from memory. No has you except such as is to man; but is, who will not allow you to be beyond what you are, but with the will also make the way of, that you may be able to it. : Day Five: Personal Application 1. During the next lecture time, you will have a chance to remember what Jesus did for you, as you partake of the communion elements. Spend some time in prayer now asking the Lord to prepare your heart for that event. Begin by asking Him to cleanse you of all impurities. Ask Him to remove distraction as you focus on His sacrifice. Then spend time remembering. Focus your attention on His broken body and His shed blood, and remember the good He has done for you. Give Him thanks and praise Him for His provision. 2. Isn t it comforting to think that God will complete the work He has begun in your life? List five things in your spiritual life that feel like they are under construction. Ask the Lord to work on them, and thank Him in advance that He will bring them to completion. 3. You have hedged me behind and before, and laid your hand upon me. (Psalm 139:5) Stop and contemplate what kind of shape your life would be in if not for the hedge of protection that God provides. Indeed, would you be alive at all? Write about a time in your life when you felt or knew the Lord was protecting you. Thank the Lord that He goes before you and is your rear-guard as well. Ask Him for His continued protection in your life physically, emotionally, and spiritually. 6
4. Joshua was faithful in the little things, and because of his faithful service, God blessed him with greater responsibilities, greater opportunities, and greater glory. Are you faithful in the little things? Write out things that you resolve to be faithful in. Be specific and think about all aspects of your life: your work, your home, your family, your friends, your enemies, your finances, your time, and more. Scripture Memory: Write the Scripture Memory passage completely from memory.. : Day Six (Optional) The Jordan River was the setting of another important event in Scripture. Read the entire chapter of Matthew 3. Spend some time meditating on it, and record any thoughts or insights you glean from that passage. (Think about the reasons Jesus did this and what the Jordan signifies.) 7
Scripture Memory: Write this week s Scripture Memory passage from memory.. : Unless otherwise noted, all Scriptures are quoted from the New King James Version Brian Joel Jackson.
