Categorical Wisdom From Proverbs 1A Introduction: 1B Among all the books of the Bible, Proverbs is uniquely addressed to young people. Though all may benefit, it is especially for the young: 1C Proverbs 1:1 5, "1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: 2 To know wisdom and instruction, To perceive the words of understanding, 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity; 4 To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion 5 A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, 2C Proverbs 1:8 9, "8 My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; 9 For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, And chains about your neck. 2B The first section of the Proverbs, chapters one through nine, form an extended appeal to a young man concerning the virtues of wisdom. 3B (from the Holman Bible Dictionary) The book of Proverbs contains the essence of Israel s wisdom. It provides a godly worldview and offers insight for living. Proverbs 1:7 provides the perspective for understanding all the proverbs: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Fear of the Lord is biblical shorthand for an entire life in love, worship, and obedience to God. 4B (from the Holman Bible Dictionary) Proverbs are designed to make one wise, but they require wisdom to be used correctly. Proverbs are true, but their truth is realized only when they are fitly applied in the right situation. 5B (from the Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible) Far from there being an unbridgeable gap between religion and the secular world, Proverbs shows the results, in noble character and harmonious, happy homes, when the whole of life is brought under God s control. 6B Jesus and the Proverbs: 1C Jesus life and wisdom is the ultimate, Matthew 12:42, "42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here. 2C Jesus is the personification of God s wisdom, 1 Corinthians 1:22 24, "22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 3C Christ, as He lived His life, unfolded the wisdom of God, 1 Corinthians 1:30 31, "30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God and

righteousness and sanctification and redemption 31 that, as it is written, He who glories, let him glory in the LORD. 4C All of God s wisdom is in Him, Colossians 2:1 3, "1 For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 5C A comparison: 1D Proverbs 8:22, "22 The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. 2D John 1:1 3, "1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 7B Linguistic: 1C The book of Proverbs is composed almost exclusively of Hebrew parallelisms. When there is no parallelism, the form is of the Popular Sentence. 2C Four types of Hebrew parallelism: 1D Synonymous parallelism: 1E The second line repeats the basic idea of the first line: 2E Proverbs 18:6, "6 A fool s lips enter into contention, And his mouth calls for blows.. 2D Antithetical parallelism: 1E The second line contrasts the basic idea of the first line: 2E Proverbs 10:2, "2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, But righteousness delivers from death. 3D Synthetic parallelism: 1E The second line in one way or another furthers the thought of the first line: 2E Proverbs 18:8, "8 The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, And they go down into the inmost body. 4D Symmetry, introverted, or chiastic parallelism: 1E The elements of the second line match those in the first line in reverse order, i.e., a-b-c-d-c-b-a. 2E There are many examples in the Bible. Genesis 6-9 contains the great chiasm of the flood narrative. 3E Proverbs 31:21 25, "21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with scarlet. 22 She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates, When

he sits among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies sashes for the merchants. 25 Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. 3C Telescoping parallelism: 1D The various kinds of parallelisms are employed not only at the verse level, but with paragraphs and even in whole books. 2D The flood chiasm is an example of paragraph chiasm; 3D The book of Amos is an example of a book chiasm. 2A General Outline: 1B Prologue, Proverbs 1:1-7. 2B Introduction and appeal to the young, Proverbs 1:8-9:18. 3B First Collection of Solomonic Proverbs, Proverbs 10:1-22:16. 4B Words of the Wise, Proverbs 22:17-24:34. 5B Second Collection of Solomonic Proverbs, Proverbs 25:1-29:27. 6B Words of Agur, Proverbs 30: B Words of Lemuel, Proverbs 31: A Outline of the Introductory Appeal: 1B Invitation of folly, 1: C Invitation of wisdom, 1: D Invitation to call out for wisdom, 2:1-9. 1E The Loose woman, 2: F The good consequences of wise living, 3: G Practical advice about right social behavior, 3: H Embrace wisdom, 4: H Do not embrace the adulteress, 5: G Practical advice about wrong social behavior, 6: F Bad consequences of adultery, 6: E The Loose woman, 7: D Invitation of wisdom who calls out and cries aloud, 8: C Invitation of wisdom, 9: B Invitations of Lady Folly to her house, 9: A Exposition of Proverbs 1-9: 1B Prologue, Proverbs 1:1-7: Proverbs 1:1 7, "1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: 2 To know wisdom and instruction, To perceive the words of understanding, 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity; 4 To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion 5 A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, 6 To understand

a proverb and an enigma, The words of the wise and their riddles. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. 2B Introduction and Appeal to the Young, Proverbs 1:8-9:18. 1C Invitation of folly, Proverbs 1: D Invitation to listen to parents, 8 My son, hear the correction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; 1E Wisdom is a family matter. The father disciplines; the mother teaches the Law. 2E Three elements to the instruction of a child: 1F Teaching; 2F Example; 3F Correction. 3E Parents are indeed commanded to teach, Deuteronomy 6:5 9, "5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 2D Explanation, the true symbols of affection given from parents to children, 9 For they will be a wreath on your head, And necklaces about your neck. 1E In other words, they are valuable rewards, not chains of binding. 2E These are tokens of love, better than presents and gifts, the true expressions of lasting love from parents. 3E As such the faith and correction of your parents are worth the listen. 3D The enticement of sinners, 10 My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. 4D The content of a typical enticement, 11 If they say, Come with us, Let us lie in wait to shed blood; Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; 12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who go down to the Pit; 13 We shall find all kinds of precious possessions, We shall fill our houses with spoil; 14 Cast in your lot among us, Let us all have one purse 5D Command to stay apart from the violent thieves, 15 My son, do not walk in the way with them, Keep your foot from their path; 6D Explanation, 16 For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood. 7D The reality of their lifestyle as a self-trap, 17 Surely, in vain the net is spread In the sight of any bird; 18 But they lie in wait for their own blood, They lurk secretly for their own lives.

8D Conclusion, greed leads to loss of life, 19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners. 2C Invitation of wisdom, Proverbs 1: D The public call of wisdom, 20 Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares. 21 She cries out in the chief concourses, At the openings of the gates in the city She speaks her words: 2D The problem with openness, 22 How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, And fools hate knowledge. 1E Pethi means open, wide. With reference to thinking it means one who is openminded, who believes anything. 2E This person is defined by the following: 1F Proverbs 7:7, "7 And saw among the simple, I perceived among the youths, A young man lacking heart, 2F Proverbs 14:15, "15 The simple believes every word, But the prudent considers well his steps. 3D Call to repentance from openness, 23 Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. 4D The limited nature on the offer to repent, 24 Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded, 25 Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke, 5D Laughter instead of help, silence instead of aid, 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes, 27 When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. 28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. 6D The basis for the laughter and silence, 29 Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD, 30 They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke. 7D Judgment: volitional responsibility, 31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own fancies. 8D Alternatives, death and destruction or safety and security, 32 For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil. 3C Invitation to call out for wisdom, Proverbs 2:1-9. 1D Invitation to value and receive, 1 My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you,

2D Purpose of the value system in having an ear ready to listen, 2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; 3D Application of the value system in crying out for wisdom and seeking it, 3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, 4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; 1E God commands us to call out for wisdom, to pray for it. 2E James 1:5, "5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 4D The consequence of asking God for wisdom, 5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. 5D God as the source of every good and wise thing, 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; 8 He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice, Equity and every good path. 4C The Loose woman, 2: D The principles which preserve, vv.10-11: 1E The two conditions, intake and attitude, 10 When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is a gentle melody (niyam) to your soul, 2E The general result, 11 Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, 2D The dangers from which wisdom preserves, vv.12-19: 1E Categories of dangerous men, vv.12-15: 1F From the way and the man of perverse speech, 12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks sinful things, 2F From the walkers in darkness, 13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 3F From those who rejoice in evil, 14 Who rejoice in doing evil, And delight in the perversity of the wicked; (1 Corinthians 13:6, "6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth) 4F From the crooked, 15 Whose ways are crooked, And who are devious in their paths; 2E The immoral woman, vv.16-19: 1F Her strategy, 16 To deliver you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words, 2F Her history, 17 Who forsakes the companion of her youth, And forgets the covenant of her God.

1E Keep and treasure, 1 My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. 2E Keep and treasure and live, 2 Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. 3E Bind in every way, 3 Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4E Closest of companions, 4 Say to wisdom, You are my sister, And call understanding your nearest kin, 5E Specific application, 5 That they may keep you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words. 2D The extended example, vv.6-20: 1E An incident on the street, 6 For at the window of my house I looked through my lattice, 2E An idiot at large, 7 And saw among the simple, I perceived among the youths, A young man devoid of understanding, 3E Violation of the proximity command, 8 Passing along the street near her corner; And he took the path to her house 4E Violation of the walk in the light command, 9 In the twilight, in the evening, In the black and dark night. 5E Her attire, 10 And there a woman met him, With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart. 6E Her manner and her wanderlust, 11 She was loud and rebellious, Her feet would not stay at home. 7E Her predatorial roaming, 12 At times she was outside, at times in the open square, Lurking at every corner. 8E The kiss, 13 So she caught him and kissed him; With an impudent face she said to him: 9E The declaration of her place in her monthly cycle, 14 I have peace offerings with me; Today I have paid my vows. 10E The personalized invitation, 15 So I came out to meet you, Diligently to seek your face, And I have found you. 11E The invitation of the bed, 16 I have spread my bed with tapestry, Colored coverings of Egyptian linen. 17 I have perfumed my bed With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 12E Me love you long time, 18 Come, let us take our fill of love until morning; Let us delight ourselves with love.

13E The absence of the husband, 19 For my husband is not at home; He has gone on a long journey; 20 He has taken a bag of money with him, And will come home on the appointed day. 3D The reasons for his surrender, 21 With her enticing speech she caused him to yield, With her flattering lips she seduced him. 4D The swiftness of his surrender, 22 Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, 5D The deadly danger, 23 Till an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, He did not know it would cost his life. 6D Heed the warning, 24 Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: 7D Guard the heart, 25 Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; 8D Just one of many victims, 26 For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men. 9D The highway to hell, 27 Her house is the way to hell, Descending to the chambers of death. 12C Invitation of wisdom who calls out and cries aloud, (the great personification of Wisdom) 8: D The realms of the public call of wisdom, vv.1-3: 1E The high decibel level, 1 Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice? 2E The critical locations for projection and gathering, 2 She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet. 3 She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors: 2D The target audience in all, and especially among fools, 4 To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men. 5 O you simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of an understanding heart. 3D The call to listen based on the quality of instruction, vv.6-11: 1E Excellence and right, 6 Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things; 2E Truth and hatred for sin, 7 For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips. 3E Absence of the crooked, 8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them. 4E Plain to the ones who seek, 9 They are all plain to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge.

5E The great value of wisdom, 10 Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold; 11 For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her. 4D Wisdom as the way to life, 12 I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out knowledge and discretion. 5D The right attitude of wisdom, 13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate. 6D The strength of wisdom, 14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength. 7D The operation of wisdom in the most difficult of positions, 15 By me kings reign, And rulers decree justice. 16 By me princes rule, and nobles, All the judges of the earth. 8D The promise of availability, 17 I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me. 9D The wealth of wisdom, 18 Riches and honor are with me, Enduring riches and righteousness. 19 My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, And my revenue than choice silver. 20 I traverse the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice, 21 That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, That I may fill their treasuries. 10D Wisdom and the biggest job ever, vv.22-31: 1E Present at the beginning, vv.22-26: 1F Before creation, 22 The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. 2F Before the earth, 23 I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth. 3F Before the depths of the earth, 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water. 4F Before the mountains and hills, 25 Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth; 5F Before the earth or fields or dust, 26 While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, Or the primal dust of the world. 2E Present at creation, vv.27-31: 1F At the design of heavens and earth, 27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep, 2F At the design of the atmospheric and subterranean systems, 28 When He established the clouds above, When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,

3F At the design of oceans and foundations of the earth, 29 When He assigned to the sea its limit, So that the waters would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth, 4F Presence at all phases of design and execution through the seven days, 30 Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, 5F Fellow rejoicing, especially in humanity, 31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world, And my delight was with the sons of men. 11D Call to listen, vv.32-36: 1E Call to listen for blessing, 32 Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways. 2E Call to embrace wisdom, 33 Hear instruction and be wise, And do not disdain it. 3E Blessing based on daily immersion, 34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors. 4E Life and grace the result, 35 For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the LORD; 5E Death for rejection, 36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death. 13C Invitation of wisdom, 9: D The house that wisdom built, vv.1-6: 1E The house is built, 1 Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars; 2E The meal is prepared, 2 She has slaughtered her meat, She has mixed her wine, She has also furnished her table. 3E The invitations are sent, 3 She has sent out her maidens, She cries out from the highest places of the city, 4E The content of the invitations, 4 Whoever is simple, let him turn in here! As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, 5 Come, eat of my bread And drink of the wine I have mixed. 6 Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding. 2D The direction of correction, vv.7-12: 1E The wrong direction, 7 He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself. 8 Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. 2E The right direction, 9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

3E The key attitude, 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. 4E The results, 11 For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. 12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you will bear it alone. 14C Invitations of Lady Folly to her house, 9: D The character of a foolish woman, 13 A foolish woman is clamorous; She is simple, and knows nothing. 2D Her positions and her universal call, 14 For she sits at the door of her house, On a seat by the highest places of the city, 15 To call to those who pass by, Who go straight on their way: 3D The content of her appeal, 16 Whoever is simple, let him turn in here ; And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, 4D The shortsighted pleasure, 17 Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant. 5D The company of zeroes, 18 But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell.
