1 Programs for Seniors! Donna Shulman Director of Adult & Senior Programs , ext. 134 Please remember that all members and nonmembers are required to have a valid ID pass to enter the JCC. Book and Author Series A Replacement Life By Boris Fishman Thursday, March 10:30am Visible City By Tova Mirvis Thursday, May 7 10:30am SJJCC.ORG The Fay J. Lindner Foundation Senior Services Center SENIOR CONNECTION NEWSLETTER JANUARY-APRIL 01 TEVET-SHEVAT-ADAR-NISSAN-IYAR 77 Coming to the JCC! Tuesday, April 14, 01 Author Martin Greenfield Measure of a Man Famed Brooklyn tailor recalls his mission of Holocaust Vengeance. He survived the savagery of the Holocaust, made it to America with barely a penny and became a world famous tailor in Brooklyn, dressing celebrities and presidents. In his new memoir, Measure of a Man, Martin Greenfield tells the story of his extraordinary life. New York Post, Sunday, November, 014 Martin Greenfield will be handling questions following presentation. Books will be available for sale and signing. Trip to Yale University Art Gallery on October By Pat Creditor We left the JCC at 10:00am and arrived in New Haven at 11:30am. Our first stop was The Union League Café across the street from The Yale Art Gallery. It is housed in a beautiful old building. Our tables surrounded a fireplace with a roaring fire! The surroundings and the meal were both elegant. After lunch we crossed the street to the gallery. It was founded in 13 by John Trumball and occupied one small building designed by Trumball in the heart of Yale s old campus. Now, 10 years later, the major renovation and expansion of this teaching museum is complete and the permanent collection galleries have been fully reinstalled with more than 4,000 works of art. I was struck by the beautiful architecture of the buildings as well as the art inside. African art, American decorative arts, American paintings and sculpture, Ancient art, Asian art, European art, coins and medals, modern and contemporary art, photographs, prints and drawings are all on display in this special art gallery. Across the street is the Yale British Art Museum that some on our trip also explored. Both galleries are free! Our docent gave us an overview of the collections. The weather cooperated and although we were all tired, we will have memories of going to an Ivy League school if only for one day! Thanks to Donna for planning this wonderful trip and for taking such good care of us!
2 MEET A JCC SENIOR SUPER SENIOR IRVING LEVINE By Donna Shulman 1 1 Irving Levine was years old on December 7, Pearl Harbor Day. He still remembers attaching a portable radio to the ceiling light bulb outlet of his bathroom in his apartment in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn and closing the door in the night hours so he would not disturb his family while he excitedly followed the breaking news of the Japanese attack on the USA. He points to that event as an example of his lifetime passion for news and current events. A passion that is displayed every Monday morning at 10:30am at our JCC where Irv has conducted his popular News Behind for the past 1 years. Mr. Levine asserts that as a typical Jewish kid living in poverty he has been one lucky guy with a great career and wonderful family. Irv met his wife, the former Marion Steier, at her sweet party and married her five years later in November 11. Marion, before her retirement, was the Executive Director of The North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center in Roslyn Heights for 3 years. They have three children, two sons and one daughter, who are all accomplished professionals with high degrees, six talented grandchildren who like their parents and grandparents have successful careers in non-profit management positions and three great grandsons. Irv has an extensive university and post graduate education in social work and intergroup relations, attending Brooklyn College, NYU and the University of Wisconsin. He has also taught and lectured at numerous universities including NYU, Hunter College and Fordham. Irving s career was mostly with the American Jewish Committee, the prominent Jewish human rights group. He served in many top positions over a 30 year period and ending his career as the National Affairs Director and the Director of the AJC s Institute for American Pluralism, which was a leading think tank dealing with multi-ethnic relations and the psychology of ethnic identity. He has spoken from hundreds of platforms in the US and Europe and has been honored many times for his work. He says that he is most proud to have received the Annual Pope John XXIII Award for outstanding achievement in advancing Catholic-Jewish relations. It was a high point in my long career as an intergroup relations professional. He says he loves his Monday morning group of seniors because he finds their intellect stimulating and provocative. It keeps me on my toes and has kept me forever young. Irv s devotion to the seniors over the past 1 years has been unbelievable. He drives to the JCC every Monday from Westchester and provides our seniors with an intellectual and stimulating morning of facts and discussion. He is an integral part of the JCC s senior department. Every Monday morning I get at least three phone calls from the members Will Irv be in today? They hang on his every word and look forward to the discussions every week. Did you know that Irv s son, Dr. S. Robert Levine, is married to the actress Mary Tyler Moore. 4 APRIL The Assassination of JFK Presented by Bud Livingston IRV IS BACK! Measure of a Man presented by Author Martin Greenfield Celebrities from Yesteryear Presented by Bob Lippet 30 7 Celebrating the Music of the Harlem Renaissance presented by Rose Marie Guzzo GRAVITY By Gloria Beck By definition gravity is the force that causes everything that goes up to fall down to Earth. Okay, I get that concept intellectually but all that I see happening around me lends itself to another definition the seriousness of a situation. When I look into the mirror, I usually take my glasses off because I don t really want to face the gravity of what gravity has done to me. What happened to that natural upturned smile I always had? It has become a frown. What is that waddle I ve discovered? Did that happen as a revenge of all the turkeys I ve eaten? Nah! I only like their drumsticks. My perkiness elsewhere, if you know what I mean, also seems to have disappeared. No more nude beaches for me. Is that a wrinkle I see before me? Can t be! With all the money I spend on face cream, a wrinkle wouldn t dare to appear. My fingers are like wrinkled prunes from dipping into all of those jars. I always said one day I d have to resort to putty to fill in some of my lines. Do you know the name of a good hardware store? They say if you lay on your back you take ten to twenty years off your face. The problem is that I have a bad back and can t carry that bed everywhere. If I step Sociable Senior Sunday By Roving reporter Paula Gordon On September 14, the JCC had our Sunday Senior Soirees. It was a fantastic afternoon. Our refreshments of champagne, fruit and cake were sponsored by Janet and Jerry Kroll. They celebrated their 64th anniversary. What a wonderful and generous couple they are. We wish them many more years together with us, their family and friends in good health and happiness. Our entertainment was a family of back far enough I can get a full body view in my mirror. Even without my glasses I m able to see the gravity of this situation. I m not sure I m looking at me. Did someone else step in front of me at this moment? Is that why Snow White s wicked stepmother was so mean when she asked the question, Mirror mirror on the wall? She really didn t care about Snow White. It most likely was a gravity problem. Those hours of tennis and swimming did nothing for my arms. I can use those flaps under my arms as paddles now if I m playing ping pong. The legs are still okay but as I ve complained before not as long as they used to be. I probably wore them out looking for face cream. Is it the pull of gravity that makes me tired and want to sit more often? Nah! It s probably the search for the Fountain of Youth that is getting to me. You know I think gravity can work for you if you walk on your hands, because whatever fell will now go back into a corrected position. It s not a bad idea, but who wants to walk that way all day? I can barely walk the way I m supposed to, besides I m really not that anxious to get my hands dirty just in case of an emergency and I need to put on some more cream. musicians and singers doing the Just Sixties music. We had a ball hearing and dancing to the music of our youth. Roberta Wolf and her husband Harvey showed us their steps. Then Harvey danced with some of the other women. Our thanks to Donna for her hard work and planning of this super day. Come down to the JCC, whether you are a single, couple or just need some enjoyment on an occasional Sunday afternoon.
