Unit 10, Session 1: Israel Demanded a King TWEETS Saul was an imperfect king Israel wanted from God, but Jesus is the perfect king God wanted to give His people. #thegospelprojectkids ( Christ Connection 133 Characters) Israel demanded an earthly king, so God warned them about the consequences of their request and then gave them Saul. #thegospelprojectkids ( Content 138 Characters) STATUS UPDATE God intended for a heavenly king to rule over Israel, but the Israelites did not trust God s plan. So God chose Saul to be their king. God had a plan to one day send His Son, Jesus, to rule the entire world. Jesus would be the perfect King who would bring peace and salvation to the world. E MAIL Unit 10, Session 1: Israel Demanded a King Dear Parents, This week, we will reach an important juncture in the big story of the Bible. The people of Israel had been led by a series of judges, but now they looked around and saw how the other nations had kings, so they too wanted a king. So the people went to the last judge, the prophet Samuel and demanded a king. Samuel resisted, but God told him to do as the people asked. However, God told Samuel to warn the people about the consequences of having a king. Samuel tried to warn the people that a king would place a heavy burden on them. He would take young men to fight in wars. He would tax the people. He would make them work hard. But the people refused to listen so God appointed a man named Saul to be Israel s king. From a human perspective, Saul was the perfect choice, but as we will see next week, he was far from being the perfect king God had in mind. Help your kids understand that Jesus is our King and that He is the perfect, wise, and loving King. Encourage your kids to follow Jesus as the absolute leader of their lives. FAMILY STARTING POINTS Babies and Toddlers Jesus is our King. God s people wanted a king to lead them. Saul was the first king of Israel. God sent Jesus to be our King. Preschool Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever.

Kids God chose a king for Israel. Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. God chose Saul as Israel s first king. UNIT KEY PASSAGE Psalm 47:7 8 (Preschool:: Psalm 47:7 ) NEXT WEEK God Rejected Saul as King (1 Samuel 13:1 14; 15:1 35) Check out the Gospel Project for Kids Family App or the Big Picture Cards for Families for more ways to interact with the Bible content each week.

Unit 10, Session 2: God Rejected Saul as King TWEETS Saul made a sacrifice he couldn t make and was rejected. Jesus made a sacrifice only He could make and was accepted. #thegospelprojectkids ( Christ Connection 138 Characters) King Saul sinned by giving a sacrifice that only the priest was allowed to give. God rejected Saul as king. #thegospelprojectkids ( Content 130 Characters) STATUS UPDATE King Saul sinned by giving a sacrifice that only the priest was allowed to give. God rejected Saul as king, but He had a plan to send His Son, Jesus. King Jesus gave up His own life as a good and perfect sacrifice so sinners would be forgiven and accepted. E MAIL Unit 10, Session 2: God Rejected Saul as King Dear Parents, Last week, we saw how Israel demanded a human king to rule over them. God s intention was to provide the perfect King for His people in Jesus, so He warned Israel about the problems they would face if they chose a human king instead. The people did not heed God s warning, and God gave them Saul to be their king. This week, we will see that God s warnings about a human king began to come true with Saul. Saul looked just like the kind of king that the people wanted, but he sinned when he tried to offer a sacrifice that only the priest was allowed to give. Because of this, God rejected Saul as king. Help your kids understand that Jesus is our perfect King and that we can trust and follow Him completely. Talk with them about our need to obey God completely and that we should do so because of our love for Him. FAMILY STARTING POINTS Babies and Toddlers Jesus is our King. King Saul did not obey God. God was going to choose a new king. Jesus is our King who always obeyed God. Preschool Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever. Saul disobeyed God, so he could not be king anymore. Kids Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world.

God rejected Saul as king because of his sin. UNIT KEY PASSAGE Psalm 47:7 8 (Preschool: Psalm 47:7 ) NEXT WEEK David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath (1 Samuel 16 17) Check out the Gospel Project for Kids Family App or the Big Picture Cards for Families for more ways to interact with the Bible content each week.

Unit 10, Session 3: David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath TWEETS God gave David power to defeat Goliath. In the same way, Jesus showed His power by defeating death and saving sinners. #thegospelprojectkids ( Christ Connection 140 Characters) David wasn t a strong warrior, but God gave him power to defeat Goliath, the enemy of God s people. #thegospelprojectkids ( Content 121 Characters) STATUS UPDATE David was not a big or strong warrior, but he trusted God. God gave David power. When God sent His Son to earth, Jesus did not look like a strong warrior either. But by dying on the cross and coming back to life, Jesus showed His power to save sinners. E MAIL Unit 10, Session 3: David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath Dear Parents, As we continue our journey through the big story of the Bible this week, we come to God anointing David to replace Saul as king and David s victory over the giant Goliath. While Saul looked the part to be king, David didn t look like a strong warrior and seemed to be no match for the Philistine champion. But God gave David power and he defeated Goliath. God used this victory to position David as the next king and also to show us a picture of Jesus. When Jesus came to earth, He didn t look like a strong warrior either. But Jesus showed His power when He died on the cross and rose again to defeat death. Help your kids see the connection between David and Jesus. Talk about how God defeated Israel s enemy of Goliath and our greater enemy of sin and death. Guide your kids to see that David doesn t primarily teach us to be brave, but to trust in Jesus instead. FAMILY STARTING POINTS Babies and Toddlers Jesus is our King. God chose David to be king after Saul. God gave David power to fight Goliath. God sent Jesus through David s family. Preschool Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever. God gave David power to defeat Goliath. Kids

Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. God gave David power to defeat Goliath. UNIT KEY PASSAGE Psalm 47:7 8 (Preschool: Psalm 47:7 ) NEXT WEEK David and Jonathan Became Friends (1 Samuel 18:1 12; 19:1 10; 20:1 42) Check out the Gospel Project for Kids Family App or the Big Picture Cards for Families for more ways to interact with the Bible content each week.

Unit 10, Session 4: David and Jonathan Became Friends TWEETS David and Jonathan s friendship points to our friendship with Jesus. He showed His love by dying to save us from sin. #thegospelprojectkids ( Christ Connection 139 Characters) Saul s son Jonathan and David became true friends even as Saul s jealousy of David grew and he wanted to hurt him. #thegospelprojectkids ( Content 136 Characters) STATUS UPDATE David and Jonathan were true friends. Their friendship points to an even greater friendship our friendship with Jesus. Jesus calls us friends (John 15:15), and He showed His love by dying to save us from sin. E MAIL Unit 10, Session 4: David and Jonathan Became Friends Dear Parents, This week we will continue to trace David s rise to replace Saul as king. David s victory over Goliath brought David great fame and adoration in Israel. Saul had brought David into his court, but in time, Saul became intensely jealous of David and even tried to kill him. Meanwhile, David and Saul s son Jonathan became true friends. Even though Jonathan was next in line to be king after Saul, he recognized and accepted that God had chosen David instead. David and Jonathan s friendship points to an even greater friendship our friendship with Jesus. Jesus calls us friends (John 15:15), and he showed His love by dying to save us from sin. Help your kids see Jesus is our King and He is our friend also. FAMILY STARTING POINTS Babies and Toddlers Jesus is our King. King Saul wanted to hurt David. Jonathan was a good friend to David. Jesus is our Friend and King. Preschool Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever. God gave David a friend. Kids Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. God used Jonathan to save David s life.

UNIT KEY PASSAGE Psalm 47:7 8 (Preschool: Psalm 47:7 ) NEXT WEEK God Made a Covenant with David (2 Samuel 7) Check out the Gospel Project for Kids Family App or the Big Picture Cards for Families for more ways to interact with the Bible content each week.

Unit 10, Session 5: God Made a Covenant with David TWEETS God said every king of Israel would come from David s family. King Jesus is from David s family and rules forever. #thegospelprojectkids ( Christ Connection 136 Characters) God made a covenant with David that every future king of Israel, including Jesus, would come from his family. #thegospelprojectkids ( Content 131 Characters) STATUS UPDATE God promised David that every future king of Israel would come from David s family, and David s kingdom would last forever. God kept His promise by sending His Son, Jesus, to be one of David s descendants. Jesus is our King who will never die; He will rule over God s people forever. E MAIL Unit 10, Session 5: God Made a Covenant with David Dear Parents, We continue the big story of the Bible this week with David recognizing that he was living in a wood paneled palace while the ark was still in a tent. David wanted to build a temple for God, but God did not want David to build it. Instead, God told David that his son would build the temple, but He made a covenant with David and promised that every future king of Israel would come from David s family. God kept His promise by sending His Son, Jesus, to be one of David s descendants. Jesus is our King who will never die; He will rule over God s people forever. Help your kids see that God s promise to David to provide Jesus can be traced all the way back to God s promise to Adam and Eve and Abraham in Genesis. Remind them that God had promised from the beginning that He was going to provide a Rescuer to break the power of sin and death and that the Rescuer is Jesus. FAMILY STARTING POINTS Babies and Toddlers God made a special promise to David. God promised to make David s family kings. God sent Jesus through David s family. Jesus is our King forever. Preschool Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever. God said Jesus would be part of David s family. Kids

Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. God promised that Jesus would come from David s family. UNIT KEY PASSAGE Psalm 47:7 8 (Preschool: Psalm 47:7 ) NEXT WEEK David Sinned and Was Restored (2 Samuel 11:1 12:14; Psalm 51) Check out the Gospel Project for Kids Family App or the Big Picture Cards for Families for more ways to interact with the Bible content each week.

Unit 10, Session 6: David Sinned and Was Restored TWEETS David sinned and was forgiven. When we sin, we can receive God s forgiveness because Jesus paid for our sin. #thegospelprojectkids ( Christ Connection 130 Characters) David sinned and at first tried to cover up his sin. Later, he was confronted and repented, and God forgave him. #thegospelprojectkids ( Content 134 Characters) STATUS UPDATE When David sinned against God, God forgave him, but sin always comes with a price. God spared David s life, but David s son died. When we sin, we can receive God s forgiveness because God sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sin. Jesus died the death we deserve so that we could be made right with God. E MAIL Unit 10, Session 6: David Sinned and Was Restored Dear Parents, This week are going to learn about God s unending forgiveness that David experienced and we can too because of Jesus. David sinned against God by taking Bathsheba away from Uriah and having Uriah killed in combat, but when God sent Nathan to confront him about his sin, David repented and God forgave him. David s sin came with a price though, as sin always does. In the same way, we can receive God s forgiveness too because God sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sin. Jesus died the death we deserve so that we could be made right with God. Help your kids understand that sin is serious and that God has not promised to spare us from its consequences. At the same time, point out the love, mercy, and grace of God that we experience because of Jesus and how in Jesus we have been completely forgiven of all our sin. FAMILY STARTING POINTS Babies and Toddlers Jesus is our King. David made a wrong choice. David asked God to forgive him, and God forgave David. God forgives us through His Son, Jesus. Preschool Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever. God forgave David.

Kids Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. God forgave David when he repented of his sin. UNIT KEY PASSAGE Psalm 47:7 8 (Preschool: Psalm 47:7 ) NEXT WEEK Solomon Asked for Wisdom (1 Kings 2:1 4,10 12; 3:1 15) Check out the Gospel Project for Kids Family App or the Big Picture Cards for Families for more ways to interact with the Bible content each week.
