Walking in Liberty pt4 Free to Serve Galatians 5:13-15/ Deuteronomy 10: 12-13/ John 13:3-5;12-17
RECAP A. Define Liberty Liberty is the state of being exempt from the dominion of others or from restricting circumstances. Liberty is FREEDOM to do according to one s own preference and choice. It is EMANCIPATION B. The Importance of LIBERTY Liberty provides the freedom needed to serve God without regulations or restrictions
RECAP A.Liberty Requires Illumination (Light) B. The Main Source of Illumination The Perfect Law of Liberty C. What is the Main Purpose of the Law of Liberty? To reveal to us how we are to live life freely in accordance to the standard of the ROYAL LAW which is the Law of Love.
RECAP The Law of Liberty unveils Love to us: It reveals the history of God s love It provides us the REASON for God s love It Expresses the Love Christ has for us It defines the Holy Spirit who produces love Finally, It outlines how we are suppose to walk in love as children of God
REAL LIBERTY SERVES ANOTHER 1. God requires it First "And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good? Deut 10:12-13 (NKJV)
REAL LIBERTY SERVES ANOTHER 1. Then He requires it for Others For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Ga 5:13 15(NKJV)
Love agápē (from agapáō): the willful act of expression & service without limits toward God and Man
Serve douleúō (from doύlos): servant. To be in position of a servant & act accordingly; to be subject & serve in subjection or bondage
Add in Definitions of Serve & Love For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh but through the willful act of expression & service without limits (agape) subject & serve in subjection or bondage to one another [(others) douleuo].
CHRIST OUR EXAMPLE Credentials Preeminent/Divine Col 1:15-18 (NLT) Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can t see such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything.
CHRIST OUR EXAMPLE Command To Love John 15:12 (NKJV) This is My commandment, that you love (agapáō) one another as I have loved you.
CHRIST OUR EXAMPLE Example Foot Washing John 13:3-5 (NLT) Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
Paul urges us to have this same mindset of Christ Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. Phil 2:5-7 (NRSV)
Foot Washing CONT D Jn 13:12 17 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. 1, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them
Love MANIFESTED The defining difference in : 1.SLAVERY - Is the involuntary subjection of a person s life to another 2. LOVE - IS the willful subjection of a person s life to another
Love MANIFESTED Agape/Love is Manifested through: Obedience to GOD those who obey God s word truly show how completely they love him. 1 John 2:5 Personal Sacrifice/service toward MAN My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 1 Jn 3:18
