1 Family Home Fellowship The Passover and Unleavened Bread (no. 2 & 3) Lev 23:4-9 4 'These are the feasts of the Lord, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their appointed times. 5 On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the Lord 's Passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord ; seven days you must eat unleavened bread. 7 On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it. 8 But you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord for seven days. The seventh day shall be a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it.'" 1

2 The Passover comes from Exodus; the last plague in Egypt. All the first born were killed, but the Children of Israel were kept safe by putting blood from a lamb over their doors. After this plague pharaoh let Israel go. Matt 26: And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed * and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." 27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new 28 * covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I 29 say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom." NKJV Jesus celebrated the Passover and when He blessed the bread and the wine He said a blessing that all Jews have said since the first Passover was done. He didn't create a new feast (communion) for us to perform. What he did do was to die and be resurrected. Thereby He fulfilled the Passover. For most Matzah 1 we recite the same blessing we recite for bread: Baruch atta Ado-noy Elo-hai-nu Melech ha'olam Hamotzi Lechem Min Ha aretz. [Blessed are you G-d our L-rd King of the Universe who extracts bread from the earth]. Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-alom bor-ay peri ha-gafen Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, creator of the fruit of the vine. 3 When Jesus talked about not drinking until we enter the Fathers kingdom He was referring to the 4 th cup of wine, there are 4 cups in a Seder dinner, That when the saints are gathered together we will celebrate a Passover dinner at the end of time. 1 Cor 10:1-11 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." * 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all * these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 3

4 1 Cor 11: For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; * this is My body which is broken * for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes. NKJV This is where the Church adopted communion, but I repeat they were celebrating the Passover. Corinth is our example of the Church that consisted of Jews and Gentiles. There was disorder because of their cultural differences. The Jews were still celebrating the feast days and that is why they are admonished to acknowledge Christ in them. But we under no circumstance are required to celebrate these things as we now worship in Spirit and in Truth. 4

5 Jesus fulfilled these two feast 1 Cor 5:6-7 Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.* NKJV 5

6 Matzo OT:4682 matstsah (mats-tsaw'); from OT:4711 in the sense of greedily devouring for sweetness; properly, sweetness; concretely, sweet (i.e. not soured or bittered with yeast); specifically, an unfermented cake or loaf, or (elliptically) the festival of Passover (because no leaven was then used): KJV - unleaved (bread, cake), without leaven. NT:106 azumos (ad'-zoo-mos); from NT:1 (as a negative particle) and NT:2219; unleavened, i.e. (figuratively) uncorrupted; (in the neutral plural) specially (by implication) the Passover week: KJV - unleavened (bread). 7 Matzo is what is referred to as the unleavened bread used to celebrate both Passover and Unleavened Bread. Because it has no leaven it represents something or someone who is sinless. This is exceedingly important because there is another type of bread used in other feast days that is leavened and thus represents a flawed or sinful person. In the case of Passover and Unleavened Bread the Matzo represents Jesus. 7

8 Rom 6:11 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. NKJV We like wise fulfill the Passover and Feast of Matzo when we believe and confess Jesus to our salvation and righteousness. We pass from death to life 8
