2017 Poland Personally Seminar June 25- July 3, 2017 Tentative Itinerary Monday June 26 th : Arrival in Poland, Half Day Tour of Warsaw "One Thousand years of Jewish Life in Poland, the view from Warsaw Sites: Okopowa St. Jewish Cemetery (Gesia), Nozyk Synagogue, Jewish Theater,Old Warsaw On the first day of our trip in Poland, we will endeavor to understand Jewish Life in Warsaw (and in the whole of pre-wwii Poland) through the lens of the remains of the Warsaw Jewish cemetery. Some 250,000 Jewish graves in the Gesia-Okopowa Street Jewish Cemetery will tell us the story of the history of Jewish life in Poland in general and in Warsaw, the capital in particular. The cemetery is still in use today. Lunch on your own and money change at a local mall Check into Hotel Opening Dinner After check-in and dinner -optional light walking tour of Warsaw s Old Town. By the fall 1944, two thirds of the City of Warsaw lay in ruins having been ravaged by the Nazi suppression of two uprisings the Ghetto April-May 1943 & the general one in August The Nazis completely destroyed the Renaissance Old Town and after the War, it was reconstructed very precisely. Lodging: Warsaw Marriot 1

Tuesday June 27 th : Warsaw & Treblinka Extermination Camp The Largest Ghetto in Nazi Occupied Europe Dilemmas surrounding life, death and resistance in the Ghetto Sites: Jewish Ghetto, Czerniakow home, Janusz Korczak Orphanage, Tomb of Father Jersey Popieluszko, Umschlagplatz, Mila 18, Rappaport Memorial, Treblinka Extermination camp In November 1940, the Nazis closed up 30% of the Jewish population of Warsaw into a ghetto in the heart of the downtown. From June-September 1942 the Nazis systematically deported over 6000 Jews per day from the ghetto to Treblinka, where they were murdered. The following year, the Jews in the ghetto revolted against the Nazis. By June 1943, the ghetto was completely destroyed. In the morning, we will tour through the few physical remains of the ghetto, including sections of the original wall as well as the orphanage of Janusz Korchak. The group will walk in the steps of the Jews as they were taken to be transported to Treblinka (from the Umschlagplatz). The culmination of our tour in Warsaw will take us on a memorial route that includes the command bunker of the Ghetto fighters as well as the main monument to their struggle that was sculpted by the Jewish sculptor Nathan Rappaport. On our walk we will also encounter the Polish priest Father Jersey Popieluszko a courageous voice protesting against communism, who was murdered by the communist regime in In the early afternoon we will travel to Treblinka to learn about the implementation of the Final Solution in the context of Operation Reinhard. We will participate in a memorial service with our Survivor at the remains of the extermination camp. Box Lunch provided In the late afternoon, we will go to the only pre-war synagogue still standing (and operating) in Warsaw known as the Nozyk Synagogue and learn about Jewish life then and now in the capital of Poland. A meeting with Rabbi shudrick, the Chief Rabbi of Poland at the synagogue will give us insights into the challenges of Jewish life in Poland today. Dinner on your own- free evening Lodging: Warsaw Marriot 2

Wednesday June 28 th : Majdanek & Lublin The Nazi system of Extermination and Concentration camps in Europe Sites: Majdanek Concentration Camp, Lublin Old Town Grodzka Gate NN Theater Leaving Warsaw in the morning, we will drive to the city of Lublin. Our first stop will be a visit to the Grodzka Gate NN Theater a unique student s project that grapples with the demise of Lublin s Jewish community and the public perception of what transpired during WWII. Box Lunch provided Just at the city outskirts, we will tour the Majdanek concentration camp. In 1944, Soviet troops managed to overrun and conquer this area before the Nazis had the time to cover up the evidence. Therefore, Majdanek is the only one of the camps in Poland that remains with its original extermination apparatus intact. It was here that many Jews and Poles were murdered and/or used as slave labor. Reflection and Dinner at hotel Lodging: Karona Hotel, Lublin Thursday June 29 th : Wierzbnik & Kielce Bearing Witness and Grappling with the Question of Justice Sites: The town of Wierzbnik-Starachowice, Kielce synagogue, house of the pogrom. Today, we will begin with a visit to Wierzbnik-Starachowice, Howard Chandler's (accompanying Survivor) hometown. Together with Howard we will follow in his footsteps as he relates to us his journey through hell and back. We will have lunch with dignitaries and the mayor of Wierzbnik-Starachowice in honor of Howard. After Lunch we will continue to Kielce and meet with Bogden Bialek and learn about the Kielce pogrom and Dr. Bialek's work to commemorate those who were murdered and heal an entire community. The evening will end with a special dinner and a late evening arrival to Krakow. 3

Friday June 30 th : Auschwitz & Friday Sabbath s Eve in Krakow s Jewish Quarter Auschwitz - the Decline of Humanity Sites: Auschwitz I concentration camp museum, Birkenau the extermination camp (Ausch II), Remuh synagogue in Krakow's Jewish Quarter We will begin our day with a visit to Auschwitz I, which has been turned into a national museum. (The tour at Auschwitz will be by Auschwitz guides. You may use your own headphones.) Boxed Lunch provided From there, we will continue on to Birkenau (Auschwitz II), where 1.2 human beings were systematically murdered from Howard Chandler, who was interned in Birkenau, will accompany us and tell his story. Upon completing our tour of the Auschwitz camp complex we will return to Krakow in the late afternoon. Optional: walk to the Jewish Quarter to watch and participate in the Friday night service at the Remuh synagogue (Kabbalat Shabbat - Greeting the "Sabbath Bride"). Shabbat dinner at the hotel 4

Saturday July 1 st : Krakow Krakow the Capital of Poland - Jewish Life in Krakow before the Holocaust Sites: Kazimierz - Jewish Quarter, Old City and Market Square, and remains of the Ghetto. Optional tour in the Old Town in the afternoon - St. Mary's Church, Wawel Castle, Main Market Square. For many centuries, Krakow was the capital of Poland and the seat of the Polish monarchy. Jewish life there spans back many hundreds of years. In the morning, we will tour the Jewish quarter and some of its synagogues to get an idea of the diversity and importance of the former Jewish community here. Shabbat Lunch at JCC with a guest speaker Crossing the river, we will visit some of the remains of the Ghetto including a pharmacy owned by a righteous gentile. In the afternoon, trip participants will have the opportunity to tour the Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Because this was the seat of the Nazi governor of Occupied Poland, the Baroque and Renaissance town center of Krakow remained intact and largely undamaged. It will be possible to visit Wawel hill, which includes the Cathedral of St. Vaclaus and St. Stanislaus as well as royal tombs and crypts and the Castle itself. The main market square and St. Mary's church are worthwhile exploring, as well. Free afternoon- dinner on your own Evening: International Festival of Jewish Culture -This tremendous festival has been held in Krakow for over fifteen years now, and the former Jewish district of Kazimierz has itself steadily regained its colors during those years. Kazimierz may still be somewhat rundown in parts, but it's now one of the most spellbinding areas in Krakow, and the Festival of Jewish Culture is undoubtedly one of the brightest feathers in its cap. 5

Sunday July 2 nd : Wieliczka Salt Mines and Plashow The Trials and Tribulations of Jewish Krakow in the Shoah Sites: Wieliczka salt mines, which were in active use for 600 years and contain breath-taking salt sculptures deep under the ground. Lunch on your own Almost immediately upon establishing their political center of Occupied Poland in Krakow, the Nazis expelled most of the Jews of the city, the remainder being forced into a Ghetto. Some of the Jews managed to receive employment with Oskar Schindler. At a later stage, the Ghetto was dismantled and the surviving Jews were herded into the Plaszow labor camp. The Plaszow labor camp was turned into a concentration camp in We will visit the remains of the Ghetto, Schindler's factory, and a non-jewish pharmacy in the Ghetto run by a righteous gentile, Tadeusz Pankiewicz. Return to Krakow - Free to time - Suggestions: Shopping, Galicia Jewish Museum (10-6pm), visit to Schindler's factory open (10-8pm) Final dinner /Reflection and Evaluation Monday July 2: Very early check out and transfer to airport 6
