Sermon : The Parable Of The Wedding Garment Matt. 22: 1-14 Page 1 The Parable Of The Wedding Garment Text : Matt. 22: 1-14 INTRODUCTION : A. Have you ever found yourself in the midst of a group where you obviously did not belong? 1. ILL.- I borrowed a truck from a friend to help move a church member. When I returned the truck the owner insisted I step inside. I protested that I was dirty and smelly, but he insisted so gratitude compelled me to relent. As I stepped in I was greeted by three smartly dressed graduate students to whom he promptly introduced me as his minister and a missionary. I felt embarrassed and most uncomfortable. I repeatedly apologized for my appearance, unceremoniously refused the insistent dinner invitation and rushed out at the first opportunity to gracefully break away. 2. The parable we are about to study is about a man who found himself inappropriately dressed for a festive occasion, but didn t seem to care. B. READ Matt. 22: 1-14 explain context 1. Jesus is teaching in Jerusalem. 2. He s already used a variety of parables. 3. Some parables are against the Jews, but : a. The crowd doesn t understand all of them. b. The leaders of the Jews recognize some as being against them. ( 21: 45 ) C. The Jewish leaders wanted to arrest Jesus, BUT : 1. They did not because the people thought Him to be a prophet. 2. So, they tried to trip Jesus up in hopes of discrediting Him with the people. 3. However, Jesus proved to be more wise than all of them. TRANSITION : Looking at this parable we see it had a direct application to the Jewish nation as well as a general application to all who would be called by the gospel in the future.

Sermon : The Parable Of The Wedding Garment Matt. 22: 1-14 Page 2 I. The call to the feast.. A. Vs. 1-2 The king prepared a great wedding feast for His son. 1. Jesus was using a variation of stories with which His hearers were familiar. 2. The Jewish Rabbis often told two parables about wedding feast. a. A king invites people to a feast, but does not give a date. Wise people prepare what they will wear, but the foolish don t. The foolish arrive late and are made to stand outside watching the wise enjoy the feast. Message : Duty toward preparedness. b. A king entrusts various servants with his royal robes. The wise preserve them, but the foolish wear them and abuse them. When the king suddenly calls for the garments, the wise present theirs in pristine condition ( praised ), but the foolish return the garments entrust to them soiled, stained and torn. ( condemned ) Message : God gives the souls. Man must maintain it and be ready to return it to God in the same condition as when he received it. 3. In this parable of Jesus, the feast is the kingdom of God, salvation, the church. a. God prepared this kingdom before the foundation of the world. 1) Matt. 25:34- Then the King will say to those on His right, Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 2) I Pet. 1: 20- For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, 3) Compare II Tim. 1: 9 b. As with the feast, God did not reveal the exact time His kingdom would be revealed. 4. God waited until He had all things in readiness. a. Gal. 4: When the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, b. We re not told what made the time right. c. Many have speculated about the confluence of historical events. 1) Common government over most of the world. 2) Common trade language 3) Relative ease of travel ( roads, ships, security ) * These are speculation, not revelation. B. Those for whom the feast was prepared refused. 1. The Jews rejected both the kingdom and the Christ.

Sermon : The Parable Of The Wedding Garment Matt. 22: 1-14 Page 3 2. The coming of the Christ fulfilled the last of God s promises to Abraham. a. There were three promises : Land, Descendants and blessing to all. 1) Gen. 12: 1-3 2) Gen. 15: 5 3) Gen. 22: b. Neh. 9: 7-8, Records first two of those promises were fulfilled. 3. Everywhere the gospel was preached in the first century, the Jews heard it first. a. Rom. 1: 16- For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. b. Acts 13: 14- But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. 46- Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. C. Vs. 4-6 Those who were invited were urged to come. 1. The parable accurately described the reaction of the Jews to the kingdom. a. John the baptizer warned them to get ready for the kingdom was at hand. ( prophets ) b. Salvation was brought to them by Jesus, but they rejected it. c. After the Jews rejected Jesus, the Apostles preached the kingdom to them. 2. The reaction of the Jews is typical of all mankind, but they had been special. a. They were not interested in anyone except themselves. Their business, farm, etc. 1) They were contented... so they felt no need. 2) Those who eat well every day are not so eager to go to a feast. b. They were actually in rebellion; they refused to respect the authority of God. 1) What they wanted to do was more important to them than what the king wanted. 2) Even today, people tend to PRIORITIZE themselves above God. ( I want to ) 3) People like to think of themselves as being the master of their own ship. 3. Like in the parable, the Jews went farther than just rejection. a. John 11: They killed Jesus to keep people from following Him. b. Acts 4: They tried to silence the Apostles. ( admitted the miracles ) c. Acts 8 They persecuted all Christians. D. In the parable, the king invited, but did not force them to come. 1. The Jews were invited and welcomed, but most refused.

Sermon : The Parable Of The Wedding Garment Matt. 22: 1-14 Page 4 2. The Jews rejection was a great affront to God. ( They were His covenant people. ) a. Refusal to obey is rebellion. b. The killing of God s Son was no small crime. ( Not like killing any other man ) 3. The Jews bore the consequences of their rejection. a. God withdrew His protection from the Jews. NOTE: It had been necessary for God to preserve the Jewish nation until the Messiah came. When He came all of God s promises to Abraham were fulfilled so God s covenant with Israel ended. b. Without God s protection, Jerusalem was completely destroyed by Rome in 70 A.D. 1) That ended the Jewish nation of the bible. ( The Israel of today is NOT that Israel. ) 2) The loss of the genealogical tables ended the levities priesthood. c. If they had have accepted Christ, their character would have changed and Rome would not have destroyed them. 1) They were destroyed for being rebellious and troublesome. 2) Christians are submissive and obedient people. II. Vs The king s table was filled with all who were willing to come.. A. God is not willing that any should perish. 1. Vs Both evil and good were invited. a. There was no screening process before accepting someone into the kingdom. b. All who came in were accepted. 2. It was only the king who evaluated the guests. a. None of the king s servants screened the guests or enforced rules. b. The king checked his guests and enforced the rules. ( He cared. ) B. Vs The king punished the one who was improperly attired. 1. The one punished was invited, but did not show proper respect to the King. 2. The kings wanted his table full, but he would not tolerate disrespect. a. Everyone knew what was expected of a wedding guest. b. No one was forced to be there. c. Commonly, the king furnished wedding garments. 3. The disrespectful guest suffered the same fate as those who did not come. a. His actions demonstrated disrespect for the king. b. He had opportunity to change his garments, but did not. c. At judgment, the king did not request he change, but expelled him directly.

Sermon : The Parable Of The Wedding Garment Matt. 22: 1-14 Page 5 III. The application for today.. A. The feast God has prepared is salvation in His church through faith in His Christ. 1. The Jews have refused to enter. 2. God s invitation to salvation is extended to everyone. a. There are absolutely NO preconditions to qualify to be invited. b. Even evil people are to be invited. 3. Vs The invitation is extended to people where they are. ( servants went out ) a. They were not told to come to a certain place to pick up an invitation. b. God s servants are sent to you to the places where the people are found. c. Lost people should NOT have to come to church to be invited to salvation. B. Today, we can expect no better reception for gospel invitation. 1. Some will accept it. 2. Most will reject it. But Christians keep presenting and pleading. 3. Some will be persuaded over time. Because Christians keep pleading. *a. God demonstrates Himself to be just by making the message available. b. When Christians share the gospel they act as God s agents, i,e., servants. C. No one comes to God on his own terms. 1. Everyone who comes to God must be willing to be transformed. a. God provides us with pure white wedding garments VIA the blood of Christ. b. When one comes to God s salvation he must leave his dirty garments outside. c. Read I Cor. 6: 9-11 d. Read Rom. 6: The one who wants to be saved without change will be disappointed every time. a. Matt. 7: 21 Not everyone who professes faith will be saved. b. Luke 9: 23 Whoever will not devote their daily life to Jesus cannot be saved. D. Just making it into the room doesn t guarantee one a seat at the table. 1. The one who responded to the invitation came into the church, but he was judged. 2. Those inside the church will be judged. a. I Pet. 4: 17- For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? b. Amos 3: 2- You only have I chosen among all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities. ( Principle )

Sermon : The Parable Of The Wedding Garment Matt. 22: 1-14 Page 6 CONCLUSION : A. Thus, by this parable we are taught : 1. Not to take God for granted. ( We must come to Him on His terms and with respect. ) 2. Not to bring our sins into the church with us. 3. Not to limit the invitation to only those we feel to be righteous. ( good candidates ) B. God wants to save everyone, 1. but any who will be saved must accept His salvation on His terms. 2. God will always demand the respect to which He is due. C. Accepting God s invitation is but the first step, the beginning : 1. Christians must conform to God s likeness. 2. We must continually mature into the fullness of Christ. 3. While transforming, day by day we must serve God in His mission to invite all. INVITATION :
