10. HOW HAS GOD S GRACE BEEN EXTENDED TO MAN AND HOW HAS MAN OBTAINED IT? Note: all scripture references are from the New King James translation. INTRODUCTION As used in this study, the grace of God refers to the expression of God s unmerited favor, forbearance, goodness, kindness, longsuffering, love and mercy. Consider the following Exodus 34 6 And the Lord passed before him [Moses on Mt. Sinai] and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty Psalm 51 1 [David, troubled by his sins, prayed:] Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. Romans 2 4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? --the apostle Paul Ephesians 2 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved) 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. the apostle Paul 1. BUT HOW DOES GOD'S GRACE APPEAR AND HOW IS IT EXTENDED? Titus 2 11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age God's grace has appeared unto man through teaching. The following passages further reveal the manifestation of God's grace through His Word: Acts 14 3 Therefore they (Paul and Barnabus) stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace Acts But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 32 So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. the apostle Paul Cf. Eph. 3:8; Col. 1:6; 2 Th. 2:13-14; James 1:18 Ephesians 3 8 To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ --the apostle Paul 2 Peter 3 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ 2. IN THE BIBLE, GOD S GRACE FOLLOWS A CONSISTENT PATTERN First, God provides a way whereby those He favors can be benefited and blessed. And second, God then teaches those individuals how to follow that way to receive the promised blessings. Let s 1

observe a few (among many) examples: The Example Of Noah (Genesis 6:1-8:22) According to Genesis 6, because of the wickedness of man, God purposed to destroy the inhabitants of the earth by water. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord (Gen. 6:8). God first extended his grace to Noah by providing a way whereby Noah and his family could be saved. And then God instructed Noah how to follow that way to safety in the building of the ark. Noah became the beneficiary of God s grace when he obeyed what he was told to do (Gen. 6:22; 7:5). This principle occurs repeatedly throughout the Bible, and is also involved in our salvation today. The Example Of Israel in Egypt While the Israelites were living in Egypt, there arose a Pharaoh that brought them under bondage, and set over them task-masters to afflict them with their burdens (Exodus 1:1-14). God extended His grace to the Israelites by providing a way for their deliverance. He sent Moses to lead His people out of slavery and into the promised land (Ex. 3:1-4:31). When Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go free, God brought plagues on the Egyptians (Ex. 5:1-10:29). But Pharaoh hardened his heart. God then instructed each family among the Israelites to take a male lamb without blemish, and on the 14 th day of the month, kill it in the evening, roast it, eat it and sprinkle its blood on the two doorposts and on the lintel of their houses where they ate it (Ex. 12:7-11). God then took the life of all of the firstborn in Egypt where the blood had not been applied including the house of Pharaoh (Ex. 12:29-30). Finally, Pharaoh yielded to Israel s release. The Israelites were the subject of God s grace. God extended his grace to them through teaching, instructing them of the way to safety and freedom. They became the beneficiary of God's grace after they obeyed what He had taught them to do. The Example Of God s Gift To Israel In Joshua 1:3, 11, 13, 15 God promised to give the promised land to the Israelites, but the gift was conditional upon the Israelites following God s instructions for taking the land (Joshua 1:7-9; cf. Lev. 26 and Deut. 28). In like manner, our salvation is a gift (Eph. 2:8-9), but it is conditional upon our following the Lord s instructions for receiving it (Matt. 7:21-27; 2 Thess. 1:7-9; 1 John 2:3-5). After the Israelites crossed the Jordan river into the promised land, God instructed them to smite and utterly destroy the idolatrous inhabitants of the land (Deuteronomy 7:2; 20:16-17). One of the first fortified cities that lay in their path was Jericho, a city surrounded and protected by a large wall. In Joshua 6:1, God promised to give Jericho to the Israelites, but the gift was conditional upon the Israelites following God's instructions for taking the city. The men of war were to march around the city once a day for six days and seven times on the seventh day. The priests were to blow the trumpets and the Israelites were to shout a great shout following which the walls would fall down flat, enabling Israel to invade and conquer the city (Joshua 6:1-21). Question: Did marching around the walls of Jericho and blowing ram's horns actually cause the walls to fall down? No! But would the walls have fallen down had the people refused to obey God in going around the city? No! Then what really caused the walls to fall down? God did, but He made the falling down of the walls and the ultimate victory over the city subject to the Israelites obeying His instructions. They were the subjects of God's grace. The grace of God appeared unto them through teaching. They did not receive the benefits of His grace until after they obeyed (Heb. 11:30), and neither can we. The Example Of Naaman (2 Kings 5:1-17) Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a leper. He was to become acquainted with God s grace when he was directed to seek help through God s prophet, Elisha. And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean (2 Kings 5:10). When Naaman finally did as he was told, he was healed and his flesh became like the flesh of a child (vs. 14). But what really cleansed Naaman of his leprosy? Was the healing power in the water? No! Would he have been cleansed had he refused to dip in the Jordan River seven times? No! Then what really cleansed him of his leprosy? God did, but He made His cleansing of Naaman subject to Naaman s obedience. Now Christ is our Saviour, but He has made His saving 2

of us subject to our obedience unto Him (Hebrews 5:8-9). The Example Of The Man Born Blind In John 9:1-7, Jesus encountered a man who was blind from birth. Jesus spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And He said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing. Note the consistent pattern of how the Lord s grace was extended. First, the Lord provided a way for this man to be healed. And then the blind man was given instructions for what he must do. Question: What really restored sight to the blind man? Did just putting mud on his eyes or washing in the pool of Siloam give him sight? No! But would his sight have been restored had he refused to follow the Lord s instructions? Probably not. Then what gave him his sight? The Lord did, but subject to the blind man s obedience. The blind man became the beneficiary of the Lord's grace after he obeyed what he was told to do. The Example Of Murmuring Israel In the 21 st chapter of Numbers, the children of Israel murmured against God (vs. 5). God responded by sending fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died (vs. 6). Israel then acknowledged her sin and asked Moses to pray that God would take away the serpents (vs. 7). Then the Lord said to Moses, Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live. So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived (Num. 21:8-9). Consistent with His pattern, God s grace was extended to Israel by (1) God providing a way whereby Israel could be saved from the deadly serpents, and (2) by teaching Israel how to follow that way to live. Question: Did the bronze serpent heal them of their snakebites? No! Would they have been healed had they refused to look on the bronze serpent? No! Then what healed them? God did but subject to Israel s obedience. In the New Testament, Jesus said, And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:14-15). Those who thus believe are given the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 3. HOW HAS GOD'S GRACE PROVIDED FOR OUR SALVATION TODAY? Our greatest need is salvation from sin and reconciliation to God (Isa. 59:1-2; Luke 1:76-79). And consistent with His pattern, God s grace has provided us (1) a way whereby we can be saved, and (2) instructions for following that way: John 1 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. The Old Law given through Moses prophetically pointed to the coming of Christ (Deut. 18:15, 18-19). And the greatest manifestation of God s grace ever given to mankind has been expressed in the gift of His Son who came with grace and truth. Consistent with His pattern, God s grace has been extended to us by (1) God providing a way whereby we can be saved and Christ is that way; and (2) by teaching us the truth of the way that leads to eternal life and the gospel of Christ is that truth (Jn. 8:31-32; Rom. 1:16): John 14 6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. --Jesus Christ Hebrews Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Romans 3 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 3

25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness 4. GOD'S GRACE AND CONVERSION The book of Acts has been called the book of conversions. It tells of the preaching of the gospel of Christ, of how people responded to the gospel in their conversions, and of how congregations of the Lord s church resulted therefrom. Let s carefully observe how God s grace was extended to them in the conversion process: Example No. 1 - The 3,000 On Pentecost Acts 2 records the conversion of 3,000 Jews on the first Pentecost following Christ s death, burial and resurrection. Less than two months before, they had cried out for the crucifixion of Christ. Now the apostles, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, confront them with the evidence that this was the Son of God: Acts 2 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them 22 Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call. 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation. 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 47 And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. The subjects of God's grace were those who had crucified Christ and needed reconciliation with God. God extended His grace unto them first by providing the way in Christ whereby they could be saved, and second, through teaching, they were instructed how to follow that way to spiritual life. They became the beneficiary of God's grace after they obeyed what they were told to do. Example No. 2 - The People Of Samaria Acts 8 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. 6 And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. God extended his grace to these Samaritans by making salvation possible in Christ and then by teaching them the gospel of Christ. They became the beneficiary of God's grace after they obeyed what they were told to do. Example No. 3 - the Ethiopian Eunuch Philip, the evangelist who had preached to the Samaritans (Acts 8:4-13), was directed by an angel of the Lord to go to the following man: Acts 8 27 a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go near and overtake this chariot. 4

30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, Do you understand what you are reading? 31 And he said, How can I, unless someone guides me? [He was reading from Isaiah 53 which prophetically spoke of the suffering Savior]. 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. [Note the result of preaching Jesus :] 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized? 37 Then Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. The subject of God's grace was the Ethiopian. God extended his grace to him through the teaching of the gospel. The Ethiopian received the benefits of God's grace after he obeyed what he was told to do. Example No. 4 - Saul of Tarsus Acts 9:1-19, 22:1-16, and 26:9-18 records the conversion of Saul of Tarsus who became the apostle Paul. Reared in Judaism as a Pharisee (Phil. 3:4-6), his earlier life was spent in trying to destroy and eradicate Christianity (Acts 7:58; 8:1,3; 9:13-14; 26:9-11). Such was his intent the day he journeyed toward Damascus. But hear him tell what happened in his own words: Now it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me. And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? So I answered, Who are You, Lord? And He said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting. So I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do (Acts 22:6-10). For three days, he was without sight and had to be led by the hand into Damascus where he fasted and prayed. The Lord then directed a disciple by the name of Ananias to go to Saul, restore his sight and tell him what he must do (Acts 9:8-18). Now carefully observe that if believing, fasting, repenting, and praying will wash away a man's past sins, then Saul's should have been washed away, for he had done this much (Acts 9:5-9, 11). But to receive forgiveness of his past sins, what was Saul commanded to do that he had not already done? Acts 22:16 answers as Ananias says to him: And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Saul of Tarsus was the subject of God's grace. God extended His grace to him by having Ananias tell him what to do. Saul became the beneficiary of God's grace after he obeyed (Acts 9:18; 26:19). Example No. 5 - Cornelius Acts 10:1-48 and 11:1-18 records the conversion of Cornelius and his household. They were the first Gentiles (those not Jews) to receive the gospel. Cornelius was a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always (Acts 10:2). If just being devout, fearing God, giving to the poor and praying to God always will save a man, then Cornelius should have been saved; but Cornelius was instructed to send for Peter who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved (Acts 11:14). When Peter came and told him what to do, what was Cornelius household told to do that they had not already done? Let the Scriptures answer: Acts Then Peter answered, 47 Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord The household of Cornelius was the subject of God's grace. God extended the Word of his grace to them through teaching. They became the beneficiary of God's grace after they obeyed what they were commanded to do. Remember: Christ 5

is our Savior, but he has made his saving of us subject to our obedience unto Him (Heb. 5:8-9). Example No. 6 - Lydia The conversion of Lydia and her household is related in Acts 16: The apostle Paul found them on the Sabbath gathered for prayer by the riverside just outside of Philippi. Paul taught them the gospel of Christ. They were receptive and they responded by being baptized. Lydia and her household were the subjects of God's grace. God extended his grace to them through teaching. They benefited from God's grace after they obeyed what they were told to do. The same process is repeated later in the chapter in the conversion of the Philippian jailer (Acts 16:25-34). CONCLUSION The New Testament reveals two parts to man s salvation: (1) The Lord s part in providing the way for man to be saved; and (2) man s part in following the Lord s way. Therefore, the bless-ings that come from God s grace can never be fully received until man learns the way that God has provided for him, and is then willing to obey: 1 John 2 3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. cf. John 14:15; 15:14 4 He who says, I know Him, and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. cf. James 2: But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. cf. Matt. 7:21-27; 12:46-50; Luke 6:46 If, as many contend, God's grace negates the importance of man's obedience for salvation, why worry about Satan and sin (Isa. 59:1-2; Rom. 6:1-23), or law (1 John 3:4; 2 Thess. 1:7-9), or taking heed how we stand lest we fall (1 Cor. 10:12; cf. Rev. 2:4-5)? This is not to suggest that man earns or merits his salvation. Jesus taught: Luke 17 7 And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, Come at once and sit down to eat? 8 But will he not rather say to him, Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink? 9 Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. 10 So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do. Christ informs us that the salvation of our soul is worth more than the whole world (Matt. 16:26). It stands to reason, then, that if salvation is more valuable than the whole world, there is absolutely no way it can be earned or merited. It is a gift from God. But a gift is of no value unless it is accepted and made use of. We plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain (2 Cor. 6:1). David W. Echols Sr. 6
