1 Community Group Curriculum for the week of January 27, 2013 A Kingdom Torn in Two BIG PICTURE The decisions you make and the actions you take affect those around you. Believe it! Rehoboam learned that the hard way. He took the wrong advice and wound up with a divided kingdom. All of us have been negatively impacted at one time by someone else s decisions. We need to remember that even when we suffer the negative consequences of another s knucklehead decision, God can redeem the situation. Although Rehoboam wound up ruling only two tribes (Judah and Benjamin), it was through LET S DIG IN! 1. When Solomon s son, Rehoboam, was faced with a decision about the heavy taxes he was placing on the people, he sought two sources of input (1 Kings 12:1-17). a. b. c. d. e. 1. Read 1 Kings 14: This passage highlights the end of Rehoboam. Analyze the passage and discuss the following: a)
2 b) Back in the day God utilized prophets to warn the people. How does God warn His people 2. The big theme of this chapter in The Story is that a divided house will always fall. Keeping that in mind, discuss the following: a) b) c) Nations are often divided as Israel and Judah were. What steps are needed for unity among a d) Read the following passages about unity: Psalm 133:1; 1 Corinthians 1:10; 1 Corinthians 12:12-26; and Colossians 3:14. ACTION ITEM: Spend time in your group praying for our families, our church and our nation. PRAY! PRAY! PRAY! Thank God that despite human failures throughout history, He has never given up on us but continues seeking and loving us. Thank God for the people He has placed in your life who possess real wisdom and are willing to share it with you. Pray for the RiverLakes church body to exemplify Christ to others in our everyday lives. AND NOW FOR SOME FINAL THOUGHTS Upper Story Point: God has a plan. God will build His church, with or without our help. We have a choice Lower Story Point: Our decisions have ripple effects. If you are a leader, the stakes go up because your decisions affect more people. We can be different in our businesses, operating with integrity and treating people fairly. We can positively impact our families by the way we model God s message to them.
