3 A Book book intro of Firsts The first book of the Bible is a book that explodes with firsts: the first day, the first humans, the first family, the first grandchild (Enoch, see Genesis 4:17). Perhaps most important for our situation today, in Genesis we read the story of the first sin and see the beginnings of God s plan for our redemption. The delight that God expressed in the creation of Adam and Eve turned to disappointment when they chose to pull away from him. But God didn t turn away from his creation: he put into motion his plan to save the world from sin through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus! The book of Genesis, through its many well-known stories, also teaches us about God s plan for human relationships and emotions, especially within the family. Although the words grandmother or grandfather do not appear in Genesis, they easily could. These stories tell about individuals who lived for hundreds of years, living to see many generations. We can learn from their successes and from their failures. So Genesis is indeed a book of firsts. These stories point out the humanness and sinfulness of all of us, but they also loudly declare God s love, faithfulness and promise to redeem us. verse to remember Genesis 17:7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. This was not all that surprising since I had been a young bride and a young mother, but when Randy, our firstborn son, married and gave us our first grandchild, I was completely unprepared. I was especially unprepared for the love I would feel for this baby. I was amazed that the love I had felt so strongly for my sons a love I was positive would never be duplicated tripled when my first grandson s newborn eyes slowly opened to meet mine. Oh, those eyes, so trusting and innocent. I gave my heart so completely, so swiftly to this new little one named James that the bonding left me breathless. When I left the hospital, I was filled with joy, with songs of joy. I recalled the words of the psalmist, Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy (Psalm 126:2), as I enjoyed my ecstatic state. Little did I know that this child was not only a precious gift to me (though he was), but also he was God s special gift to the world. God in his miraculous grace was enlarging his Kingdom through this tiny scrap of humanity created in his image. James is a grown man now, a youth minister. Twice a year he ministers to the Kagora tribe in Africa, and through God s unending grace, he leads lost souls to Christ. As a thirty-nine-year-old grandmother, I had no idea what God had placed in my life the day my first grandson was born; but now, many IN FO C U years later, I stand astounded at his marvelous ILD S H C PR workings. 8 Saturday LET S HAVE FU N Let s Play Bible For a new twist on an old favorite of reading a Bible story, turn your grandchildren s favorite Bible story into a play. This could become a family project as a surprise for their mom(s) and dad(s). Focus on each grandchild s talents for writing the script, making costumes, painting the backdrop, gathering the props. Be as simple (just write out the script yourself and read the various parts) or elaborate as the grandkids enthusiasm and attention allows. You can also pick your favorite Bible story and seize the opportunity to share with them why this is your very favorite. See the list on page 1509 for some great Bible stories. Long Distance variation: If you think your grandchildren would like this, send them the script. Let them do the rest. 10 / perspectives Leading Your Ruth Graham Grandchild to Christ I once heard that the only things we can take to heaven with us are people. And as grandmothers, we play an important role in being certain that the people closest to us our own family members will share the glory of eternity in God s presence. I know that the task of insuring our family s salvation may seem daunting, but it starts with just two responsibilities: First, we need to pray for our grandchildren, then we need to set the example of loving and living for Christ so our grandchildren will want to know Jesus for themselves. My Grandmother s Example My own grandmother, Virginia Bell, was a wonderful example of a life lived for Christ. She spent her early married years as a medical missionary in China, living out her life in unselfish service to her husband (a busy medical doctor), her family and her church. She didn t preach or lecture; her spirituality wasn t forced or put on; I simply watched the way she approached life. She was a practical, organized woman who was never too busy to be with me and include me in the countless things she did. Her vivid imagination made even mundane chores enjoyable; and when she read to me, she made the characters come alive with an assortment of accents. She instigated wonderful Bible games that taught me Biblical facts I probably would not have learned otherwise. She told bedtime stories of her years in China with great flair and enthusiasm, telling of warlords and bandits, letting me share in her adventures. My Role as Mackie My role as grandmother looks quite different. I am a working grandmother who travels a great deal, and when I am home, I have countless projects that demand my attention. But there is no greater joy than to hear my backdoor bell ring and hear voices call out, 12

11 Mackie, where are you? from the cherubic faces looking through the door. I love to be imaginative and silly with my grandchildren. All my grandchildren love hearing me read. The same stool my grandmother kept full of toys for her visiting grandchildren, now resides in my family room full of books for my grandchildren. They open it looking for just the right book for me to read. Each summer my grandson comes to spend two weeks with me. Because he is here for an extended time, we have the opportunity to talk about things that are on his mind. He knows that he is loved unconditionally, that he holds a very special place in my heart and that I am pretty much unshockable. Their Avenue to God What does all this have to do with introducing your grandchild to Jesus? Everything. As grandmothers we build an avenue to share God s truths as we build nurturing relationships with the younger generation. If we are unavailable, critical, harsh, unpleasant, demanding or unbending, our grandchildren will not be interested in what we have to say. We want to be winsome for Christ. Children have very open, tender hearts to spiritual truths. Their curiosity opens avenues of conversation that we can turn into opportunities for talking about God s love. And God has given us an endless resource in nature. As I walk along the beach with my grandchildren, searching for shells, observing the shore birds, awaiting the hatching of turtle eggs, we talk about the creativity of God. As we watch the waves roll in we talk about how the ocean reflects aspects of God s character: powerful, awesome, faithful, deep. The sunsets or the sun after a storm give rise to discussions about Jesus return. In my yard as we look at the beautiful, fragrant lilies we talk about how God has detailed them as an artist would paint his canvas. I explain to my grandchildren that God has given these things to us for his pleasure and ours. I have openly made God part of my everyday life. My grandchildren know that God is a priority: they see me reading my Bible each day. They hear me pray with them and for them. They see me living out my faith. Faith comes easily to a child. While our grandchildren are young, we need to take advantage of the opportunities to teach them about the reality of Christ in our own lives so they will want to know him in a personal way. Perhaps through our words and our living example, we will have the enormous privilege of leading them to the Savior! 13
