1 Rebuild This City Bible Story: Rebuild This City (Wall Is Rebuilt) Nehemiah 3 4 Key Question: What is God doing in your life that you can celebrate? Bottom Line: Look for ways to celebrate what God has done. Memory Verse: Work at everything you do with all your heart. Work as if you were working for the Lord. Colossians 3:23a, NIrV Life App: Initiative Seeing what needs to be done and doing it Basic Truth: I need to make the wise choice. Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today s story. Before kids arrive, thank God for an amazing month in your Small Group. Pray that your students would be able to recognize things that He has done for them and be able to celebrate those things in group today. Ask God to give you real, concrete examples of how He has worked in your own life that you can share with your students so they can see what it looks like to celebrate what God has done in our lives. 1. Just for Fun Made to Play: an activity that encourages learning through following guidelines and working as a group What You Need: Cards from Party On! Activity Page Play a guessing game similar to Taboo. o Each card contains a holiday in October. o The goal is for the group to guess what the holiday is without the clue giver using any of the off-limit words. o Explain that the holidays are not necessarily familiar days of celebration and the answers can be crazy. o Each card contains an answer and a list of taboo words that cannot be used in the clue. o The clue giver selects a card from the deck. o The clue giver can say anything except the taboo words or anything resembling the holiday in question. For example, if the answer is National Firefighters Day, the taboo words could be: truck, Dalmatian, house. You cannot say, Puts out fires or Drives a fire truck, but you could say, Puts out flames on burning places. o The clue monitor reads the card and makes sure all clues given are legit. To begin, select one kid to be the clue giver and one kid to be the clue monitor. o Both kids look at the Party On! card. o If the clue giver says a taboo word, the clue monitor says BEEP loudly. o The clue monitor then becomes the clue giver o The card is put at the bottom of the deck and a new card is drawn. o If no taboo words are said, the kid who correctly guesses the holiday becomes the next clue giver and a new clue monitor is selected from the group. 1

Get Your Head in the Game Option 1 Made to Move: an activity that increases the oxygen in the brain and taps into the energy in the body What You Need: Cups, LEGO s or building supplies Group kids into teams of two or three. Give each kid a cup with Legos in it. Establish a starting line and a finish line. Explain that teams will race to see who can build a wall the fastest using all the Legos in their cups. o Teams must transport the Legos to the finish line by balancing the cups on their heads. o Kids cannot touch the cups with their hands. If they do or the cup falls, they go back to the starting line and try again. o Once kids reach the finish line, they can start building right away as they wait for their teammates to make it to the finish line. o There are no restrictions on how to build the wall other than they must use all their team s Legos. o The first team to create a wall using all their team s Legos wins. 2. Get Your Head in the Game Option 2 Made to Create: an activity that explores spiritual ideas through the process of drawing, building, and designing What You Need: Oreos, timer or mobile device, craft sticks, hand washing supplies Group kids into teams of two or three. Give each team a pile of Oreo cookies. Challenge teams to build the Most Extreme Stuffed Oreo in one minute. o Kids remove the stuff from their Oreos and sandwich it between two cookies. o They can use craft sticks to scrape the stuffing. o Teams have one minute to construct their Most Extreme Stuffed Oreo. o After one minute, set the teams final products next to each other to see which one is tallest. What You Say: You did some fast building! Way to stay focused and get the job done! You know who else did some fast building? Nehemiah and his crew. [Transition] Let s head to Large Group to hear about why they celebrated when they were done. Lead your group to the Large Group area. Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (Small Groups, 25 minutes) Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions. 2

3 1. Take a Snapshot [Live for God Application Activity] Made to Play: an activity that encourages learning through following guidelines and working as a group What You Need: Paper squares, pencil or markers, Bibles Divide the kids into teams of three. Give each team a stack of 2x2 paper squares and writing utensil. Write GOD on the paper squares, putting one letter on each square and line up the squares in front of each team. (Enlist kids help with this part.) Explain that when you say GO teams will come up with words to build on the word GOD, like you would in Scrabble or a crossword puzzle. o Kids will write their letters on the paper squares to add words to their crossword boards. For example, using the D in GOD they could form the word DEITY or using the O they could form the word AWESOME. o All the words created should relate to God. After time is up, allow teams to share their words. o Score one point for each word that the majority agrees is related to God. o Score one point for each original word that no other team has. o Highest score wins. o Encourage teams to defend their word selections. If someone can quickly find Scripture to support his word, award the team an extra point. If possible, leave the grids intact to be used during prayer. 2. Bible Story Extension [Talk about God Bible Story Review Application Activity] Made to Imagine: an activity that promotes empathy and facilitates biblical application through role-play and reenactment What You Need: Bible, Bricks, tape, pencils or markers, the WALL OF INITIATIVE, optional: mobile device Read Nehemiah 6: Ask: o How long did it take to build the wall? o (Dig deeper: Encourage kids to use a mobile device to find an example of a biblical times city wall. Review some of the challenges it would take to build the wall, e.g. enemies trying to distract them, getting materials, lack of cranes and other machinery, etc. For comparison, ask kids how long does it take to build a house. Emphasize that it is NOT possible to build this wall without God s help.) o Why were the surrounding nations afraid? o Think back over the month. What are some reasons Nehemiah could praise God? o Where did God show His presence for Nehemiah and the Jews during the construction project? Explain that Nehemiah s story is just one example of why we should celebrate God. o God has a pattern of seeing what needs to be done and showing up to help us do it. 3

4 o The ultimate way God showed initiative was to send Jesus to rescue us, and that is definitely worth celebrating. Give kids time to think of three examples of something God is doing or has done in their lives that can be celebrated. o To prompt them, encourage them to think of times God has shown up in their lives. Maybe He has put special people in their lives or when they have been nervous He has given them peace. o Or maybe it is easier to think of examples of what they are thankful for that God has provided for them. o Be prepared to give them a personal example from your own life. Give kids three bricks and a pencil or marker. Instruct kids to write each of their examples on a brick and place it on the wall. When kids are finished, group together similar examples. Discuss the examples. Potential discussion questions: o Which examples might be easy to forget to celebrate? What about a beautiful day? Is that worth celebrating? What about a rainy, cold day? o What about things that happen every day? Is it harder or easier to remember to be thankful for the everyday stuff? Why or why not? 3. Discussion Questions [Live for God Application Activity] Made to Connect: an activity that invites kids to share with others and build on their understanding What You Need: No supplies needed Ask: o What are some ways we can celebrate or praise what God has done in our lives? o How can we remember to see what God has done in our daily lives and remember to thank Him? o How can we celebrate what God has done even if we were hoping a situation would go differently? For example: You study super hard for a test and you get a lower grade than you wanted. 4. Verse to Take with You [Hear from God Memory Verse Activity] Made to Create: an activity that explores spiritual ideas through the process of drawing, building, and designing What You Need: Paper, pencil or marker, Bibles, timer or mobile device Pair up kids and give each pair a piece of paper and pencil. Give teams one to two minutes to make a list of as many songs as they can with the word God or Jesus in the lyrics. o The team with the most legitimate/real songs wins. o You will be the judge on which songs count. 4

5 o Kids can defend their song choices and may even have to sing or hum a few bars for you. Give kids a Bible and find the table of contents. Ask for a volunteer to explain what the table of contents is for. o One of the books contains the words to songs written before Jesus was born. o The songs were sung as prayers, during worship celebrations, to praise God, and to teach people about God s ways. Challenge kids to identify the song book of the Bible. (Psalm) Look up Psalm 19 as an example of a praise psalm and read a few verses aloud. Let kids look through Psalm 19 as you ask: o What is being celebrated about God in this Psalm? (His Word, His creation, God is everywhere, etc.) o Dig deeper: What words does the Psalmist use to define God s Word? What does the psalmist say about God s Word? How can we praise God for His Word? What are words the psalmist uses for God? (God, LORD, my Rock, my Redeemer) Working as a group or individually, challenge kids to create a song, a chant, or a cheer praising God. Encourage them to use some of the words from the grid on the Take a Snapshot activity or to use one of the examples from the Bible Story Extension. Allow time for the kids to share their songs or cheers with the group. 5. Make it Personal with Prayer [Pray to God Prayer Activity] Made to Reflect: an activity that creates space for personal understanding and application What You Need: Grids from the Take a Snapshot activity Gather the group around the grids from the Take a Snapshot activity. Challenge kids to praise God for who He is, using the words from the grids. o Each kid should say a one-sentence prayer using one of the words from the grid. o If students are shy, they can simply thank God for who He is and name something from the grid. o Close in prayer by thanking God for showing initiative by sending Christ and giving us a way to live with Him now and forever. 5
