Acts 24:27 27 But after two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus... It is now 59/60 AD Felix had been appointed Governor over Judea in 52/53 AD. In late 56 AD Felix had used great cruelty to suppress riots between the Jews and Syrians that lived in the Capitol city of Caesarea. He had his soldiers kill and plunder several of the Jewish citizens. In 58 AD the Jews in Judea appealed to Nero to have Felix replaced. Felix was recalled to Rome to discuss his actions. He was not punished. He continued to have political influence. In 79 AD his wife and son were killed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Porcius Festus (Pig Festival) Roman procurator of Judaea (AD 59-AD 62) Judaean governors were appointed at the beginning of the year but did not take up their appointment until the summer. Josephus notes that when Festus arrived in Israel that there were many small groups of rebels roaming around Judea when he took office, (Ant ) and Festus eliminated most of them (War ). Festus sent quick strike infantry into the hills and then chased rebels with cavalry as they scattered. He killed most of the local rebel leadership.

Porcian Family Most famous for establishment of the Porcian Laws About two hundred years before the time of Paul s trial, the leaders of the Porcian family were instrumental in passing what are known as the Porcian laws. These were civil rights laws that protected Roman citizens from abuse from Roman rulers. They exempted Roman citizens from degrading and shameful forms of punishment, such as whipping, scourging, or crucifixion. They ended summary execution of Roman citizens and provided that citizens could escape sentences of death by voluntary exile. They also established certain rights for Roman citizens, including Provocatio, which was the right to have your case heard by higher public officials. The laws provided for a very severe sanction (possibly death) against magistrates who refused to grant Provocatio. The Porcian clan advertised these laws on coins both before and after Paul s time as laws that meant victory for freedom.

Acts 25:1-6 1 Festus then, having arrived in the province, three days later went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea. 2 And the chief priests and the leading men of the Jews brought charges against Paul, and they were urging him, 3 requesting a concession against Paul, that he might have him brought to Jerusalem (at the same time, setting an ambush to kill him on the way). 4 Festus then answered that Paul was being kept in custody at Caesarea and that he himself was about to leave [for Caesarea] shortly. 5 Therefore, he said, let the influential men among you go there with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, let them prosecute him. 6 After he had spent not more than eight or ten days among them, he went down to Caesarea, and on the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought.

Acts 25:6b-12 6b and on the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought. 7 After Paul arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many and serious charges against him which they could not prove, 8 while Paul said in his own defense, I have committed no offense 9 But Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, answered Paul and said, Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and stand trial before me on these charges? 10 But Paul said, I am standing before Caesar s tribunal, where I ought to be tried. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you also very well know. 11 If, then, I am a wrongdoer and have committed anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die; but if none of those things is true of which these men accuse me, no one can hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar. 12 Then when Festus had conferred with his council, he answered, You have appealed to Caesar, to Caesar you shall go.

Acts 25:13 Now when several days had elapsed, King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea and paid their respects to Festus. In 53 AD, Agrippa II (the son of Agrippa I who killed the first apostle James). He was King of Galilee and other lands north of Judea. He also had authority over the Temple in Jerusalem and appointed the high priest. He was devoted to Rome and suppressed those who favored Jewish Independence. Herod Agrippa II lived in an incestuous relationship with his sister, Bernice.

Acts 26: for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; 17 rescuing you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, 18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.

Researchers have found that roosters crow like clockwork when they see the sun. However, when placed for a time in a room without the sun, their crowing gradually begins to become random, infrequent and sometimes die out entirely. Researchers found that roosters need to see the sun on a regular basis for their crowing rhythms to function properly. You are a rooster in a world that is sound asleep. Your job is to crow wake up, open your eyes. However, for your crowing to not die out you need to see the Son on a regular basis.
