1 Herrick Baptist Church Newsletter December 2014 From Our Pastor Merry Christmas from our house to yours! When I think of Christmas time I can't think of anything but Jesus. Luke 2:11-12 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. This just keeps me thinking of how we are to keep telling others about the Savior Jesus. All year, not just at Christmas. Jesus came to save the lost and all of us have been lost until we ask forgiveness. The greatest gift is telling someone about Jesus the Savior! Eph. 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Nulla vestibulum eleifend nulla. Suspendisse potenti. Aliquam turpis nisi. Jesus paid it all and there is no better Gift. Toys for Tots wants you to help by buying a toy for a needing child. That toy may or may not last a year. We should tell them about Jesus who will give them great joy and life for eternity! Tell someone about Christmas and the real meaning. Jesus is the Reason for the Season. 6 The Gift of Giving Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. Luke 6:38 I love Thanksgiving! I love being with family, I love the time away from work and I love the food! Turkey, ham, potatoes, stuffing I love them all and I especially love pumpkin pie (NO whip cream, please!). But as much as I love all of those, I do get tired of the leftovers. The first day isn t bad, but after three or four feedings of the same stuff, I m ready for something new. I want a fresh meal that took some preparation, not just the stale remnants from the bottom of several plastic bowls piled together on a paper plate and briefly warmed in the microwave. I want some real food that took effort and time to prepare. Something that I can truly enjoy, just like the first round of that Thanksgiving feast. Do you ever wonder if God gets sick of leftovers, too? I m not talking about the leftover food from Thanksgiving, but the leftovers that we give Him every day the remnants of ourselves that He gets after we give the best servings to the world. Jesus tells us But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. (Matthew 6:33). I think that verse is a pretty clear statement that God hates leftovers more than we do. Like me, do you often give God your leftovers? Have you ever thought about ways to change that? Maybe this year as we start to think about Christmas, we should put God at the top of the gift list and give to Him first. Instead of running around chaotically every day worrying about ourselves and all of our own problems, maybe we should focus on giving our best to Him. I know that when I focus on God s plan first and serve Him by serving others, my problems seem to vanish. I m pretty sure it s the same for you. So, as you finish your Christmas shopping this year, make a commitment to first give yourself to God. Ask Him for the strength to follow His plan instead of yours and then start listening to His commands. As you draw near to Him, He will draw near to you (James 4:8) and you will soon realize that giving your best gift to Him means that you will receive your best gift from Him. When that happens, you can celebrate Christmas every day!
