1 KULLEĠĠ SAN BENEDITTU Secondary School, Kirkop HALF YEARLY EXAMINATION 2015/2016 FORM 3 TRACK 2 ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION 5 10 Although these images look like the aftermath of one disaster, they are actually two places half the world apart. Last November, super-typhoon Haiyan the most powerful tropical storm ever recorded, destroyed entire cities and villages in the Philippines; the final death toll could reach up to 10,000. Soon after this happened, sudden tornadoes swept through the Midwest part of the United States, flattening whole towns. The increase in devastating natural disasters around the world has politicians and scientists debating whether it is all the result of climate change. Yeb Sano, a Philippines politician who attended the 2013 UN Climate Change Conference in Poland, said, What my country is going through as a result of climate change is madness. The international community must take immediate action to reduce its impact. But many scientists say that climate research hasn t yet provided a clear picture of how global warming affects the weather. Brian McNoldy, a scientific researcher at the University of Miami said, We cannot pick and choose which storms are affected by a warmer climate and which ones aren t So far, 2005 has been, globally, the warmest year on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. However, scientists say that the earth could become warmer by an additional 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit during the 21st century if we do not reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. This rise in average temperatures all over the world will have far-reaching effects on the earth's climate and on all living things. If the Earth's temperature becomes hotter the sea level will become higher. This is partly because warm temperatures make glaciers melt. The rise in sea level may cause coastal areas to flood. Deserts will probably increase in size. Strong storms may become more likely and farming may not make as much food. These effects will not be the same everywhere but many of these changes have already begun. Scientists, for example, have reported that some polar bears are drowning because they have to swim longer distances to reach ice flows. Unless we take effective action now, the polar bear will likely become extinct in Alaska by Kullegg San Benedittu Frm 3 Tr 2 Reading Comprehension Text / 2014 Page 1 of 1

However, the only thing to be done was to knock at the door. I knocked, and was told to enter. I entered and found myself in a pretty large room, well-lit with wax candles. No glimpse of daylight was to be seen. At first, all I could see was a sea of darkness. It was a dressing-room, as I supposed from the furniture, though it was all quite strange to me. But in the middle of the room was a table with a gilded mirror, and that I made out to be a lady s dressing-table. 10 In an arm-chair, with an elbow resting on the table and her head leaning on that hand, sat the strangest lady I have ever seen, or shall ever see. She was dressed in rich materials satins, and lace, and silks all of white. Her shoes were white. And she wore a veil hanging from her head with bridal flowers in it, but her hair was as white as snow. Some bright jewels sparkled on her neck and on her hands, Kullegg San Benedittu Fr 3 Tr 2 English Page 5 of 8

11 KULLEĠĠ SAN BENEDITTU Secondary School, Kirkop HALF YEARLY EXAMINATION 2015/2016 FORM 3 ENGLISH LISTENING COMPREHENSION Teacher s Paper The Story Behind the Bus Track 2 TIME: 15 mins. On the first of December, 1955, Rosa Parks, a 42-year-old African American woman who worked as a seamstress, boarded a Montgomery City bus to go home from work. On that day, Rosa Parks started a new era in the American fight for freedom and equality. She sat near the middle of the bus, just behind the 10 seats reserved for white people. All of the seats in the bus were taken. When a white man entered the bus, the driver who was following the standard practice of segregation rules, insisted that all four African Americans sitting just behind the white section give up their seats so that the man could sit there. Mrs Parks, who was a peaceful activist quietly refused to give up her seat. She was arrested and convicted of breaking the laws of segregation, known as Jim Crow laws. Mrs Parks appealed her conviction and publicly challenged the legality of segregation rules. At the same time, local civil rights activists started a protest against the Montgomery bus system. In cities across the South, these bus companies were daily reminders of the inequality between blacks and whites in America. Since African Americans made up about 75 percent of the riders in Montgomery, the protest posed a serious economic threat to the company and a social threat to white rule in the city. A group named the Montgomery Improvement Association, composed of local activists and ministers organised the peaceful protest. As their leader, they chose a young Baptist minister who was new to Montgomery: Martin Luther King, Jr. Sparked by Mrs Parks action, the protest lasted 381 days, into December 1956 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the segregation went against human rights and the Montgomery buses removed the reserved sections. This event was the beginning of a revolutionary era of nonviolent protests in support of civil rights in the United States. Kullegg San Benedittu Frm 3 Tr 2 Listening Teacher s Paper Page 2 of 2
