His elders sought to give him courage. One gave him a good luck charm to ward off all the evil spirits; another asked the city Council to erect a street light on the corner; another said earnestly, it is sinful to be afraid: Trust God and be brave. They all failed in helping this child. Until one wise man came along with genuine understanding and said to the child, I know what it s like to be afraid, I will walk with you past the house. The wise man did a great deal to remove the fear by lifting it from the child shoulders and placing part of it on his own. We live in a world of which we are overly exposed, we see too much. Naturally we seek to protect ourselves by learning how to turn the page, scroll down, change the channel and look away, we desensitize ourselves in order to preserve ourselves and the tragedy of that is that we are losing our Human solidarity. That unique ability to feel for somebody else. There is a growing deficit of empathy in our society. The greatest teacher who ever lived was Moses; the man who every religion agrees was a great prophet. In his very first encounter, G-d s opening words to Moses was Sal Nealecha Me-al Raglecha - take off your shoes from your feet. He didn t say kneel before me, bow, submit, cover your head, take off your hat, prepare your heart, cleanse your mind - he said take off your shoes. Why? Judaism explains something so beautiful. When you walk through life with shoes, you can walk over stones, glass, water, even fire and not feel a thing; you are protected from the outside. Without shoes even in the comfort of your own home you can feel everything when you step on the slightest protrusion the pain Climbs right up the spine you feel everything, Hashem was signaling to Moses, if you want to possess the truth, have meaning in life, get close to G-d, and stand on holy ground, you have to take off your shoes. Remove the insulation that you wear to protect yourself from the environment, it will hurt, but you must be able to feel the pain of others in order to walk with them. Imagine what it feels like to be hungry before you go and feed the poor. Imagine what it feels like to be alone and find somebody and let them know they are not alone. Imagine what it would feel like to be stricken with disability before you go and visit the sick. What it is like to be a child being abused by a grown-up before you lose it with your own children. Empathy is the ability to see something of yourself in everyone you meet and that everyone includes the stranger and even your enemy. How many times does the Torah warn the Jewish people, Be kind to the stranger for you were a stranger. You yourselves know how it feels to be a stranger (you know the soul of a stranger) because you were strangers in Egypt. If you see your enemy s donkey sagging under its load, you shall not pass by. You shall surely lift it [the load] up with him. (Ex. 23: 5) Because through the eyes of empathy you will see beyond your enemy, instead you will see him as a human being. Aggression may divide you, but there is something deeper that connects you. If someone is in trouble, help. Don t stop to ask whether they are friend or enemy. אל תדין את חברך עד שתגיע למקומו The wise sages said - you cannot judge another person until you stand in their place and you will never stand in their place because you are already standing in your own. We are our worst when we judge another and we are our best when we empathize with others. On the Yomim Noraim we all come together as one large family and approach G-d in unison, we say not I but we sinned before you. Al Chete She Chatanu. We walk together through this period and in the merit of that unity itself, may we all be granted G-d s fevered judgment and complete forgiveness. Lieba and I wish our fellow clergy, executive, and members of the Chevra family the blessings of a Shana Tova and a Kativa ve Chatima Tova. 3 Cantor s Message It is my pleasure and privilege to extend my heartiest and warmest greetings for the coming New Year A year filled with good health and contentment. We pray, dear G-d, that it may be a rich, fruitful year for Klal Yisrael and all mankind. May we be inscribed in the Book of Life and that the days to come may bring peace to Israel. It is Rosh Hashana that makes us realize that time is life; that time is the most precious element in life for two reasons: first, because every human being receives such a limited supply and second, because once lost, it can never be gotten back. It is surely important, therefore, for each and every one of us, as we approach the beginning of a New Year to pause for a moment and consider as to how we are spending our time. Are we making the best use of it? Are we using it all for pleasure, or are we also devoting some of it to a worthwhile cause? Are we devoting enough time to our Congregation and Shul? As I am in the midst of practising with our beautiful choir, I thought that In order to enrich our understanding of the melodies and prayers for Shabbat Yom Tov and the High Holy Days, I would like to offer my time on a one to one basis or as a group. If you are interested please see me or contact the synagogue office. May the coming year, be one of spiritual growth. May Hakadosh Barouch Hu (the Almighty) hear our prayers, that we will fulfill Mitzvot and that we reach a higher level so we can say to Hashem Look down from Your Holy Habitation in Heaven and Bless Your People Israel (Deut.26:15) and that Hashem responds to all our prayers. On behalf of my wife Marsha, my daughter Zemira Chaya and myself I extend to the entire Congregation and their families our best wishes for health and happiness to all, and may we all be inscribed in the Book of Life. Amen. Yitzhak Epstein 4 President s Message When I assumed the Presidency I did so with one primary goal in mind to help renovate our spiritual home structurally, administratively and culturally, by rejuvenating its premises, rebuilding the administrative staff and offering more and diverse opportunities for participation at the shul in whatever way is meaningful to you. To that end, you will see, if you have not already, the beautiful new floor in the main lobby, the redecorated bridal room and the new carpets, floor, and seat cushions in the main sanctuary. I want to sincerely thank all of the benefactors who made these improvements possible, especially Roslyn Joseph, Ben Cohen, Michael Cons and Jack Starke. No house, however beautiful, would be a home unless it is filled with people being together to enjoy its premises. This past year there were again a number of successful events and programs. We had a Night of the Senses scotch tasting and art sale for Chanukah, a Song of Songs tribute concert honouring Beverlee and David Perlin and Mrs. Marsha and Cantor Isaac Epstein, an inspiring Shabbaton with The Accidental Talmudist Salvador Litvak, a panoply of Sisterhood events led by the tireless Sally Raicek, a Shabbat Under the Stars with over 1000 of our fellow Jews in Hampstead Park, a sunny and enjoyable golf tournament followed by dinner and an auction, a klezmer concert organized by our Gabbai Hershey Fitelberg, and several informative lecture series by the Rabbi, to highlight but a few. We are also very proud to have initiated the Chevra A-Link Program for young adults with special needs. We are delighted to announce that the Chevra Synagogue will be the host synagogue for the Beit Halochem program and Israeli war veterans for the years 2017 and A new Chevra Beit Halochem committee has been established, and we hope to hear from more members and friends of the Chevra to join us on this exciting and important journey. We were also thrilled to welcome among our family 5 our Executive Director, Sid Milech. Sid brings to us many years of Jewish leadership experience having held senior executive positions at, among others, JPPS-Bialik and the Y Country Camp. Sid is working hard with our office staff, Linda Shore, Sara Miller, Robert Posman and Regina Kneller, together with our custodial staff, to ensure that you are well taken care of at our shul and I thank them for their continuing efforts to improve our services and offerings. I want to take this opportunity, on your behalf, to thank the clergy and their spouses who keep the shul thriving. Firstly, to Rabbi Jacobson who leads our services, inspires and teaches us, helps us raise our needed funds and endowments, and is always there for us, a most heartfelt yasher koach and may you continue to lead us from strength to strength. To Cantor Epstein, for your beautiful chazzanut and amazing kiddushes, thank you. Also, a special thank you to Rebbetzin Lieba Jacobson for your challa baking, bridal gemach, teaching and haimishkeit, and to Marsha Epstein for your work leading the caring Chevra Chessed committee. And, of course, my gratitude to Rabbi Meyer Kizelnik for your wisdom and sense of humour, and to Yossi Milo for leading our magnificent choir. I also want to thank the Executive, especially Sam Lieblein, Jeffrey Frank, Sanford Smith, Leo Hubermann, Daniel Miller and Gary Polachek for their many hours of thankless devotion and work for the shul, and a yasher koach to the Board of Trustees for your leadership and vision keeping the shul moving forward. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all of our volunteers, donors and benefactors, too numerous to mention individually, without whom our shul would not be the flourishing and enjoyable place it is. For those of you who missed out on our great events, programs or services, I would invite you to come back into the fold and enjoy your shul and let it add value to your lives and those of your families. Your shul should not be just a place where you attend on the High Holidays or come to say Kaddish on a yahrzeit, but a vital extension of your spiritual and social life. We also want it to be a place where you will celebrate your simchas or any holiday or family occasion in our beautifully renovated facilities, with delicious catering, and all at very affordable and competitive prices. To all of you, dear members, I look forward to sharing many more meaningful and fun experiences with you at our shul in the coming year, and I wish you and your families a happy new year, une bonne année, a shana tova and a goot yor filled with good health, love, success, mazel, and happiness for all of you and all of Am Yisrael. Arnold Cohen President

4 Director s Message One of the most powerful symbols of the upcoming High Holidays is the shofar, and while there are several interpretations of the meaning of the blowing of the shofar, the great scholar Maimonides has enunciated a vision that resonates with many people. He suggests that the blowing of the shofar is G_d s cry to us, His way of challenging us to do something constructive and meaningful with the gift of life that we have been given. The coming of the New Year is a time to reflect how each of us can do something new to enhance our own lives, as well as the lives of people with whom we come into contact. Now, it is true that none of us, as individuals, can end global warming, bring peace to the Middle East, or find medical cures for diseases such as Alzheimer s or cancer. But we can develop the strengths of character that will make a difference to our own lives and to the lives of those around us. One such opportunity for the members of the Chevra is a new initiative which will be starting just after the holidays. This actually started several years ago when I had the privilege of attending a concert organized by the Montreal chapter of Beit Halochem, the organization that has built state of the art rehabilitation centres in Israel for wounded soldiers of the Israeli Defence Forces. Although the music at the concert was outstanding, what really affected me was the introduction of four IDF veterans, who thanked us Canadians for our support. Of course, we all realized that it is we who should be thanking these brave men and women, who risk their lives so that we can all live as free and proud Jews, both in Israel and throughout the world. And now, as the Executive Director of the Chevra, I am very proud of the fact that the Chevra will be serving as the host synagogue for Israeli war veterans in the coming two years. Several members of the Chevra have already committed to joining the Chevra Beit Halochem Committee, which will work collaboratively with the Montreal committee either to host the soldiers, or to help organize their visits to Montreal and to the Chevra. Two such volunteers are Gloria and Allan Tannenbaum, who actually were among the first Montrealers to host a young Israeli soldier over 25 years ago. They have kept in touch over all these years, and in their recent trip to Israel, were thrilled to visit the soldier who now is a middle aged father with four children of his own. This Rosh Hashana, please join Gloria and Allan, (and others from the Chevra), by responding to the call of the shofar, and taking the steps to change the world by changing ourselves. After the holidays I will be sending out a personal invitation to you, and look forward to participating with you in this life-changing experience. Shanna tova u metukah Sid Milech Executive Director Sisterhood Report On Saturday morning May 7th the Annual Mother s Day celebration took place with many women from our Sisterhood taking part in the Shabbat services. A beautiful Kiddush luncheon, sponsored by 18 of the sisterhood members followed, in memory of honouring mothers & mothers-in-law. We would like to sincerely thank Rabbi Jacobson, Cantor Epstein, the Choir under the direction of Yossi Milo, and all those who helped to make this Shabbat a success. A historic tour of Montreal s old Jewish Quarter took place on Wednesday, May 4th. Following breakfast at The Chevra, prepared by Cantor Epstein, a bus took a group of more than 40 people down to the old Jewish Quarter, where tour guides, provided by the Jewish Museum, took 2 groups through many of Montreal s historic neighbourhoods, synagogues, schools, hospitals and cultural organizations, teaching them about our city s rich Jewish history. It was an event that will be remembered by all who attended. Several members of the Sisterhood met at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, on Wednesday, June 29th where Sisterhood President, Sally Raicek took them on a Guided tour of the Pompeii Exhibition. Following the tour, the group gathered for a nice lunch. A good time was had by all. After a brief summer respite, the Sisterhood will have their Opening Luncheon on Wednesday, October 26th. Our guest speaker will be Sydell Stern (Ann Novick), author the book Behind Prison Walls. Please call the office at (514) to reserve a place. Anyone interested in joining the Sisterhood and being part of our many events, are invited to call the office for more information. ``May every person be inscribed in the Book of Life for the New Year Yehi Ratzon Shetchavesh Olaynu Shana Tova Umetuka - May it be G-d s will to grant us a Good and Sweet Year. 5 Olam Chessed Yibaneh The Alter rabbi of Slabodka writes on the verse of Olam Chesed Yibaneh it should say Olam Chesed Nivnah. From here it derives that just as Hashem built the world with Chesed, so should we continue to build the world on Chesed. Everyone in the world needs Chesed. When we are born as babies we require the chesed of others. When we become elderly and sick, we also need the Chesed of others. There is no other way. Chesed is necessary for the world to be built. Hashem built this into the nature of the world in order to show us the very necessity of Chesed. There is another element in Chesed as well. It is a natural tendency for people to become miserable and irritable as we age. Living a life committed to Chesed changes that it stops us from declining in this respect. Thus, Chesed not only builds the world it builds us as well. The Chofetz Chaim writes that the performance of Chesed saves a person from difficulties in life. It also ensures that Hashem will continue to maintain His love. It also awakens the Divine Middah of Chesed. The Mitzvah of Chesed applies equally to men and to women. It should also be taught to one s children. There is no better way to inculcate this most precious of traits than by example and by performing Chesed with family members. The opportunities for Chesed are indeed quite numerous. To name just a few: 1. Not forgetting the elderly in nursing homes by visiting them and/or calling them. 2. Visiting people in the hospital. 3. Calling family members of people in the hospital. 4. Calling members of the synagogue who have no family. Ivdu et Hashem BeSimcha...When performing the Mitzvah of Gemilas Chasadim one should do it cheerfully and with a smile. This is predicated upon the same halacha in Shulchan Aruch regarding the giving of charity (Yore Deah 249:3). At the opposite extreme, it is stated in Avos D Rav Nosson (13) that if one gives someone an enormous gift but greets him with a sour expression; it is as if he has done nothing. The same would apply to the Mitzvah of Chesed. There are two Mitzvos in the Torah that imbue an individual with their own unique feeling of joy they are the love of Torah learning and the joy of a Chesed. These special joys, in fact, have a Divine source to them. They emanate from the Divine light of Hashem. The Divine source for the origin of the joy we feel when we perform Chesed explains why Chesed can be so lifechanging. It can save us from depression, it can save us from the crabbiness that comes with old age, and so much more. We must also realize that encouraging others to perform Chessed is in and of itself the fulfillment of Chesed. It should therefore also be done cheerfully and with a smile. The problem is that if one is encountering resistance, then it is likely that the second person s Chesed will not be performed in the cheerful loving manner that it requires. This area is one that is fraught with difficulty since doing Chesed is actually an obligation, just as other positive Mitzvos are obligations. The halacha is that if there is a good chance that you can change someone s mind to do the Chesed then one is obligated to do this in a gentle positive manner, to encourage him to want to do it with joy and happiness. We at the Chevra put a great deal of effort in the fulfillment of the Mitvah of Chesed. We are proud of what we do and request of any or of all of our members to please come and join the Chevra Chesed Committee. Help us bring a smile on the faces of our seniors in residence or someone in mourning or those that might be hospitalized or someone who just needs a friend. One or two hours a month will bring joy to these people. On behalf of the Chevra Chesed Committee and our families we would like to extend to you and yours a Shana Tova Umetoukah and a Ketiva VeChatima Tova. Having spent a lifetime concealing his heritage, an aging German Holocaust survivor finally tries to come to terms with his past in THE LAST MENTSCH. Born as Menachem Teitelbaum, Marcus Schwarz (German Academy Award winner Mario Adorf) escaped Auschwitz with his life, only to exterminate his Jewishness. With no synagogue, Jewish friends or family, the hardened old man has done such an effective job of creating a new identity that, when faced with his own mortality, the rabbis refuse his about-face appeal to be buried in a Jewish cemetery in Cologne. Determined to return to his birthplace and establish his ancestry, Marcus enlists the help of Gül (Katharina Derr), a brash, chain-smoking Turkish woman with a troubled history of her own. The unlikely duo sets out on a road trip to a small village on the Hungarian-Romanian border, a journey that will irrevocably change them both. 8 Taslich Tashlich is a magical, mystical moment when the neshama communes with G-d and nature, transcending the vice of human folly to soar aloft, freed from the fetters of mankind s failings. It is a Kabbalistic symphony of purity, a purging of the dark that lurks within. Join Rabbi Jacobson and listen to Stories in the Park at Tashlich time, the 1 st day of Rosh Hashanah, for a study of the inner recess of the soul. Tashlich Ceremony MONDAY, OCTOBER 3, :50 P.M. at Macdonald Park on Clanranald between Isabella and Dupuis The Chevra Cordially invites all members and friends to SHABBAT SHUVA DRASHA LECTURE A Talmudic discourse to be delivered by Rabbi Asher Jacobson SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2016 in the Sanctuary at 5:30 p.m. followed by Mincha and Shalosh Seudot at 6:10 p.m. The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah (Shabbat of Return) because its special haftarah reading begins with the words Shuvah Yisrael "Return O Israel", from the prophecy of Hoshea. It is also referred to as Shabbat Shuvah because it falls during the Ten Days of Repentance. Everyone is invited to attend. SUCCOT ETROG AND LULAV Please contact Cantor Yitzhak Epstein at the Synagogue office at To order your very own ETROG AND LULAV Orders must be received by Friday, October 14, 2016 The Meaning of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur Rosh Hashanah literally means Head of the Year in Hebrew. It falls in the month of Tishrei, which is the seventh month on the Hebrew calendar. The reason for this is because the Hebrew calendar begins with the month of Nissan (when it s believed the Jews were freed from slavery in Egypt) but the month of Tishrei is believed to be the month in which G-d created the world. Hence, another way to think about Rosh Hashanah is as the birthday of the world. Rosh Hashanah is observed on the first two days of Tishrei. Jewish tradition teaches that during the High Holy Days G-d decides who will live and who will die during the coming year. As a result, during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (and in the days leading up to them) Jews embark upon the serious task of examining their lives and repenting for any wrongs they have committed during the previous year. This process of repentance is called teshuvah. Jews are encouraged to make amends with anyone they have wronged and to make plans for improving during the coming year. In this way, Rosh Hashanah is all about making peace in the community and striving to be a better person. Even though the theme of Rosh Hashanah is life and death, it is a holiday filled with hope for the New Year. Jews believe that G-d is compassionate and just, and that G-d will accept their prayers for forgiveness. Rosh Hashanah Liturgy - The Rosh Hashanah prayer service is one of the longest of the year. Only the Yom Kippur service is longer. Rosh Hashanah service usually runs from early morning until the afternoon and is so unique that it has its own prayer book called the Machzor. Two of the most well known prayers from Rosh Hashana liturgy are: Unetaneh Tokef This prayer is about life and death. Part of it reads: On Rosh Hashanah it is written, and on Yom Kippur it is sealed, how many will leave this world and how many will be born into it, who will live and who will die... But Teshuvah (repentance), tefillah (prayer), and tzedakah (charity) can annul the severity of the decree. Avinu Malkeinu Another famous prayer is Avinu Malkeinu, which means Our Father Our King in Hebrew. Usually the entire congregation will sing the last verse of this prayer in unison, which says: Our Father, our King, answer us as though we have no deed to plead our cause, save us with mercy and loving- kindness. On Rosh Hashanah it is customary to greet people with L Shanah Tovah, which is Hebrew that is usually translated as For a Good Year or May you have a good year. Some people also say L shana tovah tikatev v etahetem, which means May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year. (If said to a woman the greeting would be: L shanah tovah tikatevi v tahetemi ). This greeting refers to the belief that a person s fate for the coming year is decided during the High Holy Days. The shofar is an important symbol of Rosh Hashanah. It is an instrument often made of a ram s horn and is blown one hundred times during each of the two days of Rosh Hashanah. The sound of the shofar blast reminds people of the importance of reflection during this important holiday. Tashlich is a ceremony that usually takes place during the second day of Rosh Hashanah. Tashlich literally means casting off and involves symbolically casting off the sins of the previous year by tossing pieces of bread or another food into a body of flowing water. Other significant symbols of Rosh Hashanah include apples, honey and round loaves of challah. Apple slices dipped in honey represent our hope for a sweet new year and are traditionally accompanied by a short prayer before eating that goes: May it by Thy will, O Lord, Our G-d, to grant us a year that is good and sweet. Challah, which is usually baked into braids, is shaped into round loaves of 14 15

9 bread on Rosh Hashanah. The circular shape symbolizes the continuation of life. On the second night of Rosh Hashanah it is customary to eat a fruit that is new to us for the season, saying the shehechiyanu blessing as we eat it to thank G-d for bringing us to this season. Pomegranates are a popular fruit because, according to legend, pomegranates contain 613 seeds one for each of the 613 mitzvot. Another reason for eating pomegranates on Rosh Hashanah has to do with the symbolic hope that our good deeds in the coming year will be as many as the seeds of the fruit. Yom Kippur יו ם כ פ ו ר also known as the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year for religious Jews. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jews traditionally observe this holy day with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services. Yom Kippur completes the annual period known in Judaism as the High Holy Days. Yom Kippur is the tenth day of the month of Tishrei. According to Jewish tradition, G-d inscribes each person s fate for the coming year into a book, the Book of Life, on Rosh Hashanah, and waits until Yom Kippur to seal the verdict. During the Days of Awe, a Jew tries to amend his or her behavior and seek forgiveness for wrongs done against G-d (bein adam lemakom) and against other human beings (bein adam lechavero). The evening and day of Yom Kippur are set aside for public and private petitions and confessions of guilt (Vidui). At the end of Yom Kippur, one considers one s self absolved by G-d. The Yom Kippur prayer service includes several unique aspects. One is the actual number of prayer services. Unlike a regular day, which has three prayer services (Ma ariv, the evening prayer; Shacharit, the morning prayer; and Mincha, the afternoon prayer), or a Shabbat or Yom Tov, which have four prayer services (Ma ariv; Shacharit; Musaf, the additional prayer; and Mincha), Yom Kippur has five prayer services (Ma ariv; Shacharit; Musaf; Mincha; and Ne ilah, the closing prayer). The prayer services also include a public confession of sins (Vidui) and a unique prayer dedicated to the special Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Yom Kippur is considered one of the holiest of Jewish holidays. HIGH HOLIDAY SEATING To help facilitate the many requests we have for High Holiday seats, we would appreciate your early return of the seating pledges which you received in July. The Seating Committee or the Office will be pleased to assist members as well as non members who have not held seats in former years and who would like to daven with us this year. In order for us to accommodate you in a satisfactory manner, kindly contact the Synagogue office as soon as possible at The Festival of Sukkot...On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the Festival of Sukkot, seven days for the L-RD. -Leviticus 23:34 Rosh Hashanah literally means Head of the Year in Hebrew. The Festival of Sukkot begins on Tishri 15, the fifth day after Yom Kippur. It is quite a drastic transition, from one of the most solemn holidays in our year to one of the most joyous. Sukkot is so unreservedly joyful that it is commonly referred to in Jewish prayer and literature as Z man Simchateinu, the Season of our Rejoicing. Sukkot is the last of the Shalosh R galim (three pilgrimage festivals). Like Passover and Shavu ot, Sukkot has a dual significance: historical and agricultural. Historically, Sukkot commemorates the forty-year period during which the children of Israel were wandering in the desert, living in temporary shelters. Agriculturally, Sukkot is a harvest festival and is sometimes referred to as Chag Ha-Asif, the Festival of Ingathering. The word Sukkot means booths, and refers to the temporary dwellings that we are commanded to live in during this holiday in memory of the period of wandering. The name of the holiday is frequently translated Feast of Tabernacles, which, like many translations of Jewish terms, isn t very useful. This translation is particularly misleading, because the word tabernacle in the Bible refers to the portable Sanctuary in the desert, a precursor to the Temple, called in Hebrew mishkan. The Hebrew word sukkah (plural: sukkot ) refers to the temporary booths that people lived in, not to the Tabernacle. Sukkot lasts for seven days. The two days following the festival, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, are separate holidays but are related to Sukkot and are commonly thought of as part of Sukkot. The festival of Sukkot is instituted in Leviticus 23:33 et seq. No work is permitted on the first and second days of the holiday. Work is permitted on the remaining days. These intermediate days on which work is permitted are referred to as Chol Ha-Mo ed. Arba Minim: The Four Species On the first day, you will take for yourselves a fruit of a beautiful tree, palm branches, twigs of a braided tree and brook willows, and you will rejoice before the L-RD your G-d for seven days. -Leviticus 23:40. Another observance during Sukkot involves what are known as the Four Species (arba minim in Hebrew) or the lulav and etrog. We are commanded to take these four plants and use them to rejoice before the L-rd. The four species in question are an etrog (a citrus fruit similar to a lemon native to Israel; in English it is called a citron), a palm branch (in Hebrew, lulav), two willow branches (aravot) and three myrtle branches (hadassim). The six branches are bound together and referred to collectively as the lulav, because the palm branch is by far the largest part. The etrog is held separately. With these four species in hand, one recites a blessing and waves the species in all six directions (east, south, west, north, up and down), symbolizing the fact that G-d is everywhere. Detailed instructions for this ritual can be found under Sukkot Blessings. The four species are also held and waved during the Hallel prayer in religious services, and are held during processions around the bimah (the pedestal where the Torah is read) called hakafot each day during the holiday. These processions commemorate similar processions around the altar of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. This part of the service is known as Hoshanot, because while the procession is made, we recite a prayer with the refrain, Hosha na! (please save us!). On the seventh day of Sukkot, seven circuits are made. For this reason, the seventh day of Sukkot is known as Hoshanah Rabbah (the great Hoshanah). After the circuits on Hoshanah Rabbah, we beat the willow branches against the floor five times, shaking loose some or all of the remaining leaves. A number of explanations are offered for this unusual beating practice, but the primary reason seems to be agricultural: the rainy season in Israel begins in the fall, and the leaves falling from the willow branch symbolize our desire for beneficial rainfall. The following day (Shemini Atzeret), we begin adding a line about rain to the thrice-daily Shemoneh Esrei prayer. Why are these four plants used instead of other plants? There are two primary explanations of the symbolic significance of these plants: that they represent different parts of the body, or that they represent different kinds of Jews. According to the first interpretation, the long straight palm branch represents the spine. The myrtle leaf, which is a small oval, represents the eye. The willow leaf, a long oval, represents the mouth, and the etrog fruit represents the heart. All of these parts have the potential to be used for sin, but should join together in the performance of mitzvot (commandments). According to the second interpretation, the etrog, which has both a pleasing taste and a pleasing scent, represents Jews who have achieved both knowledge of Torah and performance of mitzvot. The palm branch, which produces tasty fruit, but has no scent, represents Jews who have knowledge of Torah but are lacking in mitzvot. The myrtle leaf, which has a strong scent but no taste, represents Jews who perform mitzvot but have little knowledge of Torah. The willow, which has neither taste nor scent, represents Jews who have no knowledge of Torah and do not perform the mitzvot. We bring all four of these species together on Sukkot to remind us that every one of these four kinds of Jews is important, and that we must all be united

14 Gala This past April 27, 2016 the Chevra synagogue in the midst of Passover organized a Jewish symphonic concert and fundraiser. Friday, June 17, the town of Hampstead and the The Chevra hosted a unique Shabbat celebration and dinner under the stars in Hampstead Park. The response from community members across Montreal was overwhelming, bringing together more than 1200 people for an amazing Shabbat celebration. The event began with a festive BBQ, music, an open bar, a special candle lighting service and concluded with a delicious dinner, catered by L Orchidée. This incredible World Symphony Orchestra 50 piece orchestra was led by our very own choir director Yossi Milo. Over 400 seats were sold, in a packed Singerman Auditorium. Just as dinner began a blanket of darkness covered the sky, followed by a summer rain, a full rainbow that stretched from one side of the park to the other and a Shabbos sermon about how these occurrences were truly biblical. A lavish pre-cocktail dinner was organized for the sponsors and performers, with special thanks to Cantor Epstein. It was thanks to Rabbi Jacobson s truly inspirational words, that rather than leaving to escape the rain, our guests remained at their tables waiting for the rain to stop. The evening was a great success and will be remembered for a long time to come. Thank you to Mayor William Steinberg and the City of Hampstead for a spectacular evening under the stars, to our sponsors, the Chevra staff and all our amazing volunteers. The show, hosted by CTV s Rob Lurie, began at 7:30 pm, featuring a mix of Cantorial, Klezmer, classical and Broadway hits. The evening included outstanding performances by Grammy Award Winner Gino Quilico, Soprano Sharon Azrieli Perez, child prodigy pianist Pinchas Antal, and the Kleztory Kleamer Ensemble. Tributes were given to our very own Cantor Yitzhak and Marsha Epstein, in recognition of many years of dedicated service to our synagogue. A beautiful video tribute was made honouring all the amazing work they have done for the shul and the community, followed by the presentation of a special plaque from our president Arnold Cohen. The concert was also dedicated to our past President David Perlin and his wife Beverlee with a video presentation including special tributes from their friends and family. Beverlee and David were also presented with a plaque by Arnold Cohen. A special thank you to Rabbi Asher Jacobson for chairing this event, to our wonderful sponsors, and to the office staff and volunteers who helped make this a great success. 16 A Mother s Day Message from one who neither had a mother nor was a mother One evening, while walking home with Rabbi Jacobson, I made a comment regarding the upcoming Mother s Day. Because of my remarks, the Rabbi suggested that I speak to this topic at the Sisterhood s Shabbat service. Growing up I did not have a mother; she died when I was very young. My father was widowed and left with four young children, two of whom were still in cribs. I cannot fathom how my mother must have felt during the two years of her failing health. She suffered deeply, not only physically but emotionally, knowing that she would never be able to enjoy tending to her children and witnessing their growth. In the 1960 s, children under 12 were not allowed to visit patients. My father would gather his four children, dress us up neatly, park the car at the RVH and walk us to a spot in the parking lot where my mother could be wheeled over to her hospital window. She weakly waved to us and we all waved back. This became our weekend ritual. As children, we were too young to understand what the family was enduring and the long term impact of a life without a mother. As a young teen, I was reminded of our loss each time I visited a friend who was fortunate enough to have a mother. I felt immense grief each time I would see a young mother with her child for I realized how alone I truly felt. In time darkness turns grey and although the scars in your heart never heal you learn to conform to your reality. Life is a gift and G-d helps you to remember this. For me, my mother was never far away and was present at my significant life events. When my husband and I married, with my father s approval and delight, I wore my mother s wedding dress. We were married in my late parents home where I deeply felt my mother s spirit. When my father passed away, I delivered my heartfelt eulogy wearing my late mother s dress. She would have been proud of him. Despite a busy career as a successful orthodontist, he played the role of father AND mother. Every morning he dressed us, made breakfast for us and took us to school. My late husband, Dr. Morris Kokin, and I wanted a station wagon full of children. Mother Nature did not co-operate and we were not blessed despite several invasive procedures. In due course, Morris suggested that we let G-d determine our future and that perhaps this inability to conceive was G-d s will. My appreciation of this train of thought allowed me to peacefully accept our fate and never look back. Soon after, my older married sister became pregnant. At six months, she was suddenly diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer. Miraculously, both she and her son survived. Because of her illness, my husband and I became surrogate parents to her son, Jesse. Since we lived in a duplex, my sister and her son moved upstairs and we lived as one family. Things have a way of working out. This is the hand G-d dealt us. My late husband got to be a father, I a mother, and my nephew had two sets of parents. A blessing. Never take anything for granted. You can lose this precious role as a mother as easily as you received it. If G-d gave you this gift, be grateful. Motherless and childless, I lived a life with an incredible father, brilliant and loving husband, five supportive siblings, a wonderful nephew and close friends. This has been my gift. If nothing else comes my way, I can honestly say that I am appreciative of everything I have had and have, that I lack for nothing and that I feel fulfilled. Mothers, consider yourselves fortunate in spite of the challenges that arise with having a mother and being a mother. My message to all of you who were blessed with mothers and are mothers is to be thankful. It is both an honour and a privilege. Life is a journey. Time goes by quickly. Life is shorter than you think. I lived with death in childhood, with the anguish of siblings and a husband ravaged by cancer, with personally being a child patient in the hospital for more than fifty days a year. All this and working as a radiographer for over 35 years at the MGH and MNH, I learned very quickly to be grateful for each and every moment. Lightning can strike at any time. To me, superficiality and materialism have no meaning in life. Surround yourselves with people with good values. Listen and learn. A good soul, generosity of spirit, compassion, accountability, honesty and integrity are the standards to reinforce. Be a role model for your children. Count your blessings. Enjoy motherhood and make sure that your children enjoy their mothers. Everyone s tragedy is his/her own. This message was not intended to make you sad but to remind you all to appreciate all that G-d has given you the good and the not so good. You can learn and grow from everything. If you have shed a few tears while reading, I hope that they were tears of joy and gratitude for all the special times and memories you have acquired over the years. After I had finished speaking at the Sisterhood Shabbat service, to my astonishment, Rabbi Jacobson followed my talk with a sermon about a woman named Sylvia. My late mother s name was Sylvia. The Rabbi never knew my mother s name. A coincidence? Was my mother listening? Since that day, many congregation members have offered feedback and shared their personal stories. I am surprised at the reaction and the degree of impact. I thank you for reading this and I hope that your mother s day was memorable. Eileen Cohen-Kokin SPECIAL SHABBATON WITH SALVADOR LITVAK In late July, knowing much of Montreal leaves for the construction holidays, we took a risk and brought Salvador Litvak, also known as the Accidental Talmudist, to the Chevra for a Shabbaton. Amazingly, we had a full house Friday night dinner and Shabbat Kiddush lunch. Sal shared his inspiring family story with those in attendance as well as his personal story. Educated at Harvard and armed with a law degree from NYU, he was set to work at a Wall Street law firm. Instead, he followed his passion to leave behind a career of prestige and stability and move to L.A where he went back to school as part of a career in film. While in L.A., he was trying to strengthen his Jewish identity. One day while in a Jewish book store, he was staring at the many volumes of the Talmud and decided to take tractate Brachot off the shelve and buy it. The boy at the cash asked if he was starting Daf Yomi. What s that? said Sal, only to find out that it was a commitment to learn a page of Talmud each day, every day for 7 1/2 years. Incredibly, he had purchased Book One (Brachot) on Day One of a 7 1/2 cycle. Could that be a coincidence he wondered? Statistically, the likelihood is 1 in many thousands! Could he be up to that commitment? Sal was determined and start he did, day by day, month by month, year by year. And at the completion, he celebrated a siyyum with over 90,000 other learners at MetLife stadium in NY to mark this significant commitment. So what to do with all this knowledge? Sal decided to write on the Jewish wisdom that he learned and share it with family, friends and colleagues. Today, that Facebook page which is updated frequently and which includes a live show has over 600,000 regular viewers. Surprisingly, many of whom are not Jewish but who have been inspired by the wisdom of our sages. To cap off his trip, we arranged a special viewing of his very funny film When do we eat?, a spoof on the modern Passover Seder experience. The movie night was sold out and a waiting list started. If there is enough interest to see the movie the synagogue would be willing to show it in the lounge. Call the office to put your name down. If you would like to learn more about Sal s weekly wisdom, please check out the Accidental Talmudist on Facebook. If you would like to download, or buy his films, please check wwww.whendoweeat.com and Thank you! Claudia & Gary Polachek. PS: Sal is our cousin

From May 10-19, 2017 There are currently 100 remaining seats on the direct flight. Already 430 people registered! there are limited spots on the direct flight to Israel and in select hotels; all of these choices available to the participants are given on a firstcome, first-serve basis. The deposit is $400 US and is fully refundable until September 16, For itinerary highlights, pricing chart and some other details, you can visit our site: General bullets on what makes this an experience not to be missed are below. 1. Unique Access As part of such a large and important group, we will gain access to speakers and sights we would NEVER access on any other trip. Examples from the last mission include hearing from leaders ranging from Shimon Peres to the Minister of Defense. Attendees visited army bases and had behind the scenes access to the central security for Jerusalem where the panorama of remote cameras was viewed. When we land, we don t go through airport security. We are cleared in advance and walk straight onto the tarmac where the plan is for us to be greeted by one of Israel s most famous Olim, Yuli Edelstein, who will share what his first landing in Israel meant to him. We then head off to Jerusalem to experience elements of the 50 year anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem with soldiers who actually took part in the battles of Mega Events Though most of our time will be spent together as a bus, we come together with the whole community for several unique Mega Events. For example, access to Masada at sunset is not usually granted but the last mission took over Masada at sunset where they had a magical Montreal wedding of two of the participants before descending as a community for a desert bash under the stars. We are looking to make 2017 even more mega. 3. Track Days To shake things up from the incredible planned agenda, we each get to customize our trip with a track day. On the track day we split up and get to choose from over 20 specially planned activities that pique our interest from activities that include wine tasting, bike riding, beach going, spa visiting, army training, business visits, and Israel 101 tours for first timers, to name just a few. 4. Relationship Building Relationships are forged on the each bus that last a lifetime. Many new friendships were created and solidified on the last Mega Mission. As well, tons of connections get established with the hundreds of people on trip - business deals get started, people are hired, matches are made, volunteer opportunities are exposed, and great learning is had from participants with similar life experiences. 5. Incredible Value The trip is all five star. Though many of the experiences are priceless, the trip is subsidized and benefits from incredible scale. For example, we take over our very own 747 for a direct flight from Montreal to Tel Aviv!. The cost of trying to just book the basics of the trip s flight, hotels, food and tours would cost anyone at least double the price. The reason Federation CJA makes this incredible investment of time and capital into the Mega Mission is that they have found that once people go on the mission, they come back so enthusiastic about the incredible work being done in Israel and by Federation that they pay the investment back many times over with their renewed commitment

27 The Chevra Golf On Monday, May 30th, 2016 The Chevra hosted our annual Golf Tournament at the beautiful Fontainebleau Golf Course in Blainville. With the help of our many generous sponsors, golfers and volunteers it was set to be a day of fun, food and foursomes. Everything was planned to a tee, and with Mother Nature s help we had a beautiful, warm and sunny day, perfect for a round of golf. With the amazing culinary skills of Beso Catering, our energy was kept up with a delicious breakfast, a scrumptious lunch, and dinner fit for a king. The festivities were concluded with a silent and live auction with lots of amazing gifts - everyone had a ball! We still need to iron out the details for next year s Golf Tournament, but we look forward to having some fun in the sun next year. Special thank you to our Committee Chair To the Golf Committee: Carol Gold Rabbi Asher Jacobson Leonard Freedman Donna Shein Sandford Smith Sid Milech Sara Miller Linda Shore Jerry Sherman Gary Trestan To all our sponsors and volunteers Congregation Chevra Kadisha B nai Jacob Beit Hazikaron Beth Hillel 1
