1 Name: STAAR WRITING REVIEW: THE TEST IS MARCH 29 TH This review is due Monday, March 28th SENTENCE TYPES Complex Sentence A complex sentence has one independent clause (sentence) and one dependent clause (beginning with AAAWWUBBIS). Ex. When Maria moved to El Paso, she made many new friends. Ex. Maria made many new friends when she moved to El Paso. Note-If the dependent clause is first, use a comma. Don't use a comma if the independent clause comes first. List the AAAWWUBBIS conjunctions: Create your own complex sentence beginning with a dependent clause. Don t forget the comma: Create your own complex sentence beginning with an independent clause. You DON T need a comma: Compound Sentence A compound sentence contains two or more simple sentences joined by a comma and a conjunction (FANBOYS) or a semicolon. Ex. Eudora Welty is a novelist, but she also writes essays. Eudora Welty is a novelist; she also writes essays. List the FANBOYS conjunctions: Create your own compound sentence using one of the FANBOYS. Don t forget the comma! Create your own compound sentence using a semicolon.

2 SPELLING, CAPITALIZATION, AND PUNCTUATION RULES Spelling Reading a sentence backwards can help you find the misspelled word because you are not focusing on the meaning of the sentence but rather on the words. Ex. He ofen reads the dicionary befor he goes to bed. In the example above, circle the words that are misspelled. Write the sentence with each word spelled correctly on the line below. ***Remember to USE THE DICTIONARY!! You are allowed to use the dictionary during the whole test! Capitalization Here are some of the basic capitalization rules you will be tested on. Capitalize the first word in a sentence. Ex. Many people work two jobs. Capitalize the first word in a direct quotation. Ex. Terry said, "Only one person may attend the show." When a quote is interrupted, don't capitalize the second part of the quote. Ex. "I read a book," said Kim "about wolves." Capitalize the first word in a salutation and closing in a letter. Ex. Dear Mrs. Adams, Sincerely yours, With love, My dear Jenny Capitalize names of people and initials. Ex. Rudy Gomez, Patsy L. Vasquez, R. E. Stanton Capitalize titles or abbreviations of titles before a person's name. Ex. President Obama, Mrs. Ruiz, Dr. Martin L. King Capitalize family relationships used as titles. Ex. Last year, Father traveled to China. Don't capitalize them when they follow a possessive noun. Ex. My father traveled to China. Capitalize names of cities, counties, states, countries, and continents. Ex. San Diego, Cook County, Texas, Europe Capitalize bodies of water and geographical features. Ex. Lake Michigan, Mojave Desert, Rocky Mountains Capitalize names of particular buildings, bridges, and monuments. Ex. White House, Alamo, Golden Gate Bridge Clubs, businesses, etc.: Boy Scouts of America, J. C. Penny Brand names: Downy, Coca Cola Historical events, time periods, and documents: Civil War, Ice Age, Gettysburg Address Days, months, and holidays: Sunday, April, Christmas Don't capitalize seasons: summer, winter, spring Capitalize titles, stories, poems, songs: Seventeen, A Wrinkle in Time, Over the Rainbow Capitalize languages and ethnic groups: English, Chinese, Russian, Hispanic, African in april, mrs. snyder will begin reading the outsiders with her english class. In the example above, triple underline the letters that should be capitalized. Write the sentence with the correct capitalization on the line below.

3 Comma Rules: Write the corresponding comma rule for each number, and then create your own example for each rule. Comma Rule #1: Comma Rule #2: Comma Rule #3: Comma Rule #4: Comma Rule #5: Ex. Comma Rule #6: Comma Rule #7: Comma Rule #8: Comma Rule #9 Colons and Hyphens: Create your own sentence for each rule. Rule 1: Use a hyphen to create a compound adjective. Ex. Sarah ended her long-term relationship with Jeremy. Rule 2: Use a colon to introduce a list. Ex. I need these items: newspaper, flour, water, string, and paint.

4 Quotation Marks: Create your own sentence for each rule. Use quotations to enclose a direct quotation. Ex. "Please return your books today," said Ms. Jimenez. Use quotations to enclose an interrupted quotation. Ex. "Spiders," explained Sean, "have eight legs." Use quotations to enclose titles of short stories, essays, poems, songs, articles, and book chapters. Ex. "Charles" (Short Story) "Jingle Bells" (Song) Apostrophes Use apostrophe and "s" to form the possessive of a singular noun. Ex. girl + 's = girl's James + 's = James's Use only an apostrophe to form the possessive of a plural noun that ends in "s." Ex. boys +' = boys' judges + = judges' Use an apostrophe to replace the letters in a contraction. Ex. it is = it's I will = I'll you are = you're could not = couldn t His classmates smirks shouldve made Jimmys insides squirm, but they didnt. Rewrite the example above with the correct apostrophes. COMMON MISTAKES (Keepers) Explain the difference between each of the following sets of words, OR write a sentence demonstrating the difference between them. You will have 4 hours to complete ALL of the multiple choice questions and an expository essay. The clock does not stop except for LUNCH! If you go to the restroom, put your head down, or sit and stare out into space, this comes out of your 4 hours. I RECOMMEND the following order: 1. Prewrite your essay (1-1 ½ hours) Break down the prompt Brainstorm Outline Rough draft Edit and revise 2. Complete multiple choice questions (1 ½ hours) Edit and revise passage as you read Cover answer choices after reading questions and look back in the passage Cross out 2 worst answers 3. Write your final draft and re-read to yourself (30 min.-1 hour) GOOD LUCK!
