Before we even read the passage of Scripture that we are going to be talking today, I want you to take a look at the piece of paper that was lying on your seat when you sat down. It s just a short, half-page that has the sermon title and days of the week. I would like for everyone in here to participate and write a one to two word descriptor of what each day of the coming week looks like for you. Do not go into detail. Just put football practice, work, grandkids coming, test, date night, maybe this weekend you are going to the lake. Whatever it is, I would like for you to have a basic idea of what your week ahead looks like. If you do not have a pen or there is not one in the pew directly in front of you, take your phone out and type it up. Got it? You might have so busy a week that it is hard for you to only write one or two words for each day. Or, your week could be just another week and looking at the paper, it just says work, work, work Hang with me on this because I want everyone to get the full affect of what we are going to talk about this morning. Turn with me in your copy of Scripture to two places Proverbs 27 and James 4. We will spend the majority of our time in James this morning. While you are turning, I will remind you of the book of Proverbs as we are coming down the homestretch of our time together in this book. The book of Proverbs is made up of 31 chapters. For this reason, many people read a chapter a day in addition to their regular Bible reading, and in so doing, they are able to read the book in a month. 1 of 10

The book is about wisdom what it is, it s value, how to get it. Often times, Proverbs teaches us about what wisdom is by describing more of what foolishness looks like in our life. No one likes to be called foolish. Even more, no one wants to be foolish, yet I find myself, often times, making more foolish decisions than I do wise. Proverbs is also, in large part, a letter written from a father to his son. King Solomon writes to Rehoboam. You can hear how personal it is in these few: Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. This is the legacy of wisdom that a father wants to leave to his son wisdom, not foolishness. He has lived longer, seen more and is more aware of the equations of life than his boy; so he writes them all down. He writes about hard-work vs laziness, love vs lust, wisdom vs foolishness, friends vs foes. The difficulty in preaching through the book is that it is made up, from chapters 10-30, short, disjointed one-liners that do not fit together like the rest of Scripture does. Sermons become more topical than what we are ordinarily used to. Follow along with me as we read Proverbs 27:1 and James 4:13-17 Proverbs 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth. 2 of 10

James 4:13 Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit ; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that. 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin Do you still have your week s piece of paper? Everyone take it out. Whether you wrote on it or typed it up on your phone, I would like everyone to have one in their hand. On the count of three, I want you to rip it in half from top to bottom For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. So often we carefully craft what our life is going to look like. We do so by planning it all out to the T, but how often do we think I am not guaranteed tomorrow. What do these verses teach us about how to live this life? I have entitled the sermon WisdomHUMBLES because I believe that is exactly what it teaches us. That you understand that you are not the one in charge of your life is key. 3 of 10

William Henley composed what many have thought to be the most inspiring poem ever written. Born out of the tragedy of his life childhood poverty and a bout with tuberculosis that left him with an amputated leg Henley wrote Invictus in The work gained its height of popularity through the film Invictus which told the story of Nelson Mandela and his return to politics. Mandela is recounted to have heavily relied on the poem for inspiration. When he lost courage, when he felt like just giving up just lie down and not get up again he would recite it. And it would give him what he needed to keep going. 1 It really is excellently written and composed, but it carries the most proud spirit of life that most people live by. It closes (and I want you to pay particular attention to the last two lines): It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. 2 I am the master of my fate the captain of my soul. Do you hear how that stands in complete and total contrast to the verses we just read? Yet more of us live our lives more true to the poem than we do Scripture. There are four lessons that we need to learn about life from these verses: the brevity of life, the sanctity of life, the purpose of life, the eternality of life. 1 Morgan Freeman. 2 William Hensley. INVICTUS. 4 of 10

James, the earthly brother of Jesus, is the author of the text. He opens with a pretty strong statement: Come now 13Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit That phrase is an attention getter. Listen up! Pay attention! For those of us who enjoy Brother Tom s preaching, Watch it now! This whole chapter he has been dealing with the problem of pride. Pride promotes strife in the church I want it my way Pride promotes worldliness I will not submit to God Pride judges other people Who are you to judge another? and then Come Now! Sometimes we can learn more about what God is teaching us through Scripture by understanding what He is not saying. Here James is giving a hypothetical situation in which a business man plans out a trip to buy and sell and make profit. 1. God is not saying to not work. Scripture gives example after example of a wise steward who works to make a profit. Solomon warns against laziness and promotes hard work all throughout Proverbs. Jesus spoke a lot about making money. 2. God is not saying to not plan. God is also not talking about the evils of planning. God is the author of order. He created the world in steps of time day-long increments for us to understand the importance of planning. He 5 of 10

is not the author of confusion 3, but instead He commands that all that we do specifically in church services be done decently and in order. 4 Instead, God warns us of planning our lives without Him. 13 Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit ; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away If I can make a note about verse 14. The better way to translate For what is your life. It is even a vapor is really For what is your life. YOU ARE even a vapor Your entire life (in the grand scheme of things) is as short as the breath that lingers on a crisp winter morning. Here for a while and then not. BREVITY I believe the overarching purpose of the verses is to show the brevity of life. Notice that neither the Proverbs or James passage deals in years or months or weeks; they deal with days. Particularly, James deals with today and tomorrow. The average life expectancy of Americans is 78 years old. The line. Each of us live our lives as though we are guaranteed that average life expectancy age. If our lives were lines, we might fill it in based Corinthians 14:33 1 Corinthians 14:40 6 of 10

Proverbs 27 and James 4 WisdomHUMBLES August 16, 2015am upon our age, but in all reality, we do not know. You may only be 28, but your line may be almost completely filled. 7 of 10

SANCTITY Our response to knowing that our lives are short should be in knowing that you are valuable. Hear me on this. You were crafted by the Almighty. He formed you, and while your life may not be perfect because of sin in this world and sin in your heart, He wants to give you His righteousness. Sadly, Christians only use the term Sanctity of Life when we are arguing for prolife values. While I am most certainly pro-life, I want us to understand that each human being, no matter its geographical placement, no matter its net income, no matter what she looks like, no matter his skill level has worth to God. 15 Instead you ought to say, If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that. God has a plan for your life no matter your age. We tend to talk a lot about it to high school and college students, but God has the same kind of plan for your life mom and dad, grandparents. It is never the wrong time to start following His will. You may read that passage and decide that from now on that s how you are going to plan your life. Good. I once got scolded because someone asked if I would be going on a certain mission trip and I answered, Yep. We leave in a couple of weeks. The person pulled me to the side and said The Bible says that you ought to say, If the Lord wills Maybe you have had a similar instance. The point of this verse is not make sure you 8 of 10

answer every question preceded with If the Lord wills The point is to live like If the Lord wills PURPOSE The reason that life is sacred every life is because every life has a purpose. Your purpose in life is to glorify God to make His name famous. You need to figure out how you can best do that with the person you marry (or are married to), the job that you have, the money you make, the influence you have acquired. Few missionary biographies have affected me like the life of William Borden. He was the heir to the Borden family fortune a name you still see on many dairy products (usually condensed milk) who considered the name of Christ so dear and souls so precious that he gave up his inheritance and donated 1 million dollars to the China inland mission. At this time in his journal, he wrote at the top No Reserve. He wanted nothing to hold him back from what he thought was God s purpose for his life to preach the Gospel to Muslims in Northern China. So at the age of 25 he moved to Egypt to immerse himself in Islamic culture while he was doing Chinese language studies. While in Egypt, he penned No Retreat on the top of his journal pages. While only living in Egypt a short time for his training, Borden died of cerebral meningitis in In a journal entry a short while before his passing, he penned the words No Regrets atop his page. No Reserve - No Retreat - No Regrets 9 of 10

16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin ETERNALITY These verses end by giving eternal consequences. By mentioning sin, James is reminding us that all sin separates from God. What you do with Christ in life matters in eternity. 10 of 10
