6 Word Wall Vocabulary: Bible: Christian holy book Christianity: a monotheistic religion established by Jesus of Nazareth, (a Jew). This religion later became the official religion of Rome Jesus: A Jewish man born in a city called Nazareth who founded Christianity Judaism: A monotheistic religion that believes in Yahweh and the Ten Commandments Monotheism: belief in one god Ten Commandments: rules between God and the early Jews of Israel Torah: Jewish holy book

7 Israel People who lived in the area that we now call Israel were called Hebrews The Hebrews believed in a monotheistic religion called Judaism Followers of Judaism are called Jews The god of the Jews is called Yahweh

8 Turn and Talk How would you describe monotheism? How are monotheistic religions different than the religions of the river valley civilizations? ANS: Monotheistic religions have one god. River valley civilizations were polytheistic, meaning they had multiple gods.

9 Political Influences of Israel The Hebrew Bible says that a man named Moses led the Jews out of slavery in Egypt While they were walking to the area that is now called Israel, Moses went to the top of a mountain and brought down laws that God had given them These laws were called the Ten Commandments The Ten Commandments were the basis for laws in Judaism

10 Political Influences of Israel All Jews followed the rules in exchange for God s protection (called a covenant, or agreement) Examples: Honor thy father and mother Have no other God before Yahweh Respect the Sabbath Don t murder Don t steal

13 Cultural Influences of Israel: Judaism Judaism Name of Deity God Founder Holy Book Leadership Basic Beliefs Abraham, later led by Moses Torah Rabbis There is only one God God loves and protects his people but holds them accountable for their misdeeds Persons serve God by studying Torah and its teachings

ANS: Judaism is a monotheistic religion founded by Abraham and led by Moses. They believe that God will protect them but holds them responsible for their actions. Their holy book is the Torah.
