2 Take heed to the words written in these scrap books, for they will certainly be used when I may not be alive to explain them. This instruction follows the impression given me that there will be a decided work done to divert minds to the striving of the so-called higher education, and they will make great mistakes because they neglect the genuine higher education. {Ms } 2 2

3 We do not understand by a living experience what is the true higher education. They will strive for false theories and name it higher education. 3 3

4 Many will make mistakes in their striving for higher education, and the example of Christ s life... will not be understood. The teaching of Christ will be put forth in vain experiments to present to the world the higher education. (i.e. true, valuable, soul-saving knowledge) {Ms } 4 4

5 I am directed to present to the people the word of Isaiah 40. Will you read this chapter, which will give a correct interpretation of the lesson in higher education? This chapter was written for the purpose of comforting true believers amid the afflicting providence of God that is coming upon our world in judgments. There will be earthquakes, storms on land and sea; heavy calamities will visit our world in sea and railroad calamities near the time of the closing up of this earth s history. 5 5

6 Awful calamities will be experienced, for the well-instructed Lucifer has perverted his higher education. And while many who have greatly sinned against God perish physically, the sincere, humble followers of Christ, who are righteous, feel decidedly the result of these judgments coming upon the rebellious people of the world and are themselves afflicted. {Ms } 6 6

7 He is warring against God and all who will exalt the Lord, and he will do his best to cause calamities. Read this chapter 40 of Isaiah. This is a declaration from the Lord. Read also Isaiah 41. These are chapters full of promises. {Ms } 7 7

19 Prophecy was important to our pioneers. In 1852 James White started The Youth s Instructor, which included Sabbath School lessons. Half of the first year, the lessons were on Daniel. In 1863 Uriah Smith wrote a series of Bible studies in the ARSH on Daniel. In 1878 Goodloe Bell wrote a series of Sabbath School studies in the ARSH on Daniel. But, when Present Truth was started in 1849, the first year was devoted to presenting the Sabbath to the people. And in February 17, 1863, Elder White started a series of studies on the Sabbath in the ARSH

23 12. Gen. 2:2 reads, And on the seventh day, God ended his work. Did God perform any labor on the seventh day? What is the genuine understanding of this passage? (See Ex 31:17.) 13. As God rested upon the seventh day of the week, what did that day thus become? 14. But the Creator fainteth not, neither is weary, Isa. 40:28. Why, then, did he rest on the seventh day? 23 23

24 Colossians 2:16 Over the centuries Colossians 2:16 has been consistently interpreted to mean that the seventh-day Sabbath has been abolished and is no longer binding on Christians. This goes back to Augustine, writing in AD 400, and even to Irenaeus around AD

25 In 1899 R. A. Torrey wrote: The Sabbath obligation is plainly and explicitly and unmistakably declared not to be binding upon the Christian. There is nothing in the whole New Testament plainer than this. Look at Col. 2:16, 17. (Torrey, Ought Christians To Keep the Sabbath?)... for Paul the observance of feasts, new moons, and the sabbath are irrelevant and literal observance of the sabbath or Saturday is no longer required (Thomas Schreiner, The Law and Its Fulfillment) 25 25

26 Gerhard Hasel stated the meaning of the term sabbath in Col 2:16 is controversial, and he gives six possible interpretations for what is done away with: (1) the seventh-day sabbath; (2) ceremonial sabbaths of the Jewish year; (3) some aspect of the sabbath without denying true sabbath-keeping; (4) perverted sabbath-keeping in honor of the elemental spirits of the universe; (5) weekdays that were designated to be sabbaths; or (6) sabbath sacrifices prescribed in Num 28:
