6 Narrative Nativity Readings for 3 Readers These are ideal for a family Christmas service or for use in schools 1 From the beginning R1: Every story begins at the beginning. But where is our beginning today? Well it s a long time ago. A long long time ago. In fact so long ago that not even (name of an elderly member of the congregation) can remember it. And that s because our story begins in the beginning, the very beginning. R2: God made a beautiful world, and then he made people, Adam and Eve. And God loved Adam and Eve. After all they were his children, his precious children, children that he loved. But poor God! Although he loved them and gave them everything in the entire world, Adam and Eve decided to do the things that God had asked them not to do. It started with an apple, just one small apple. But one thing led to another and to another and soon Adam and Eve and their children were doing lots of things that made God sad, very sad. R3: But God still loved them, he loved them very much and all he wanted was to welcome them back as his dearly loved children once again. God watched and God thought. He watched and thought, and he made a plan.
2 The Angel visits Mary R1: One day a girl sat in her home in a small room in a small house in a small village called Nazareth. She was a very special girl. Special to her Mum and Dad of course, but very special to God as well. God had looked into her heart and he saw that it was a heart full of love, full of love for God. Suddenly she looked up. She could hardly believe her eyes, standing in front of her was a shining creature, a beautiful shining creature. R2: Greetings Mary, God is pleased with you, he has seen how special you are. R1: Mary was worried, she stared at the creature and didn t know what to say. R2: don t be scared Mary. God has seen your heart, he has seen how much you love him. He has chosen you to do something very special, more special than anything anyone has ever done before. You will have a baby, a baby you will call Jesus. He will be God s son, He will be the rescuer that you have been waiting for for so long. R1: Mary felt something very strange inside of her. The creature looked at her. She closed her eyes and then suddenly, from somewhere deep inside of her some words started to grow. They grew and grew until suddenly they burst out of her mouth. R3: I am God s servant. Let it all happen just as you have said. R1: Then the creature left her and all was quiet, very quiet.
3 the Journey to Bethlehem R1: Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph. He was the village carpenter, a gentle man with big hands and a big smile. He loved God as well. He didn t know what to think about Mary s story about the creature and the baby, but one night as he thought about it he felt something inside of him. Something that he was sure was God telling him that everything would be alright and that he should marry Mary. So he did, and he looked after her as the baby started to grow inside of her. R2: But then the roman Emperor sent out orders across the whole of his empire. He wanted to count all of his people and to do this he ordered everyone to go back to the town they were born in and to take all their family as well. Joseph had been born in Bethlehem, which was several days journey away, so although the baby was about to be born, Joseph and Mary had to pack up their things, load them on their donkey and begin the long walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem. R3: the road was long and bumpy. During the day the sun was hot, during the night it got very cold. Mary was tired, very tired. Every step was hard work and painful. But eventually as the sun began to set they saw some feint lights in the distance, the lights of Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph looked forward to a comfortable bed and a good night s sleep.
4 No room in the inn R1: They arrived in the town, but it was crowded. The streets were packed and everyone wanted to find a room to stay in. Joseph went from inn to inn. R2: Do you have a room. Just something simple, nothing fancy. R3: No mister, all our rooms are full, everyone s rooms are full. There are no rooms in Bethlehem. R2: But my Mary is about to have her baby, she needs a room! R3: Well there s nothing I can do about that mister, there are no rooms here so you ll have to go and look somewhere else. R1: Joseph and Mary started to walk away. Mary could hardly walk, her face was screwed up with pain. Suddenly the inn keeper called after them. R3: Hang on a bit mister! Look, I haven t got any rooms, but you can have the stable if you like. There s only a few animals in it tonight, I m sure they won t mind. R1: He led Joseph and Mary to a small stable. Mary flopped down in the straw. The goat grunted and the donkey stamped its foot.
5 Jesus is born R1: And that is where Jesus was born! R2: What? In a stable? R1: Yes, in a stable. R3: and they put him to sleep in the manger. R2: What the trough that the animals eat from? R3: Yes the manger, the animals feeding trough. R2: But I thought we said that this was a special baby? R1: We did. R2: I thought we said that this baby was God son! R3: We did. R2: But but he was born in a stable?! R3: Don t you remember me saying that God made a plan. R2: Well yes, it was a while ago, and these nice people have sung quite a lot since then, but I think I remember it. You said: God watched and God thought and he made a plan. R1: Well this was the plan. R2: this was the plan? That his son should be born in a stable? R3: Well there is a lot more to it than that, but this is the beginning of the plan, that his son should be born in a stable. R1: And laid in a manger. R3: The son of God. R1: the light of the world. R3: The Messiah. R1: The one who has come to save us! R2: In a stable? R1 & 3: Yes! In a stable!
6 the visitors R1: Many months before some wise men in the east had seen a bright star in the sky. They knew it was a King s star so they set off to follow the star and find the King. They packed some special gifts, gifts fit for a special King. R2: Just outside of Bethlehem there were some shepherds looking after the sheep on the hills at night. It was dark, but suddenly there was a bright light and an angel appeared in front of them. They were scared! R1: don t be afraid shepherds. I bring you joyful news. Tonight a baby has been born in Bethlehem, a special baby. He is Christ the Lord, God s own son! You will find him in a stable, sleeping in a manger. Go and find him. R2: Suddenly lots of other angels appeared, a whole angel choir singing and praising God. R1: Glory to God in heaven and peace to all people on earth! For the day has come, the day of God s favour. R3: the angels went away and the shepherds ran into the town. They searched every stable until they found Jesus lying in the manger. They gathered round and looked at the little baby, then they told Mary and Joseph what the angels had said. R1: Meanwhile the wise men were still following the star. Suddenly it stopped and seemed to swoop down towards the earth. Towards towards.. towards a tumble down little stable. The wise men looked in the stable and there was a baby sleeping in a manger. They unpacked their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, and Mary watched as the three wise men knelt on the ground and worshipped her baby, the baby Jesus, the baby King.
