2 Session 1: Chapter 1 February 14, 17 &18 Mark 14: 12, On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus disciples asked him, Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover? 22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take it; this is my body. 23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many, he said to them. 25 Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. Personal Journaling 1. What do you think the disciples were feeling in that moment of the first Holy Communion? 2. What would you feel as Jesus offered you the bread and cup? 3. Write about a time when you truly felt that sharing the Lord s Supper was both profoundly sacred and deeply joyful. 4 Session 2: Chapter 2 February 21, 24 & 25 Mark 14: 26, When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, Sit here while I pray. 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, he said to them. Stay here and keep watch. 35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 Abba, Father, he said, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. 37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. Simon, he said to Peter, are you asleep? Couldn t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. 39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. 41 Returning the third time, he said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer! Personal Journaling 1. How does the Gospels portrayal of Jesus anguish in the garden inform or affect your understanding of who Jesus is? Bible Study Joel 2: 28-3: 12 The prophet Joel describes God s final judgment of the nations as taking place in the same area (Kidron or the Valley of Jehoshaphat) where Jesus journeyed on his way to Gethsemane and ultimately to the cross. 1. What insights does that connection give you as you consider Jesus agonizing over his mission in Gethsemane? Psalm 116 4

5 Remember that this is one of the psalms traditionally sung after the Passover meal. Imagine Jesus singing the psalm and coming to verse 13: I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. 2. What do you think Jesus understood this to mean for him? Luke 4: What connections do you see between Jesus three temptations in the wilderness and his three prayers at Gethsemane? 6 Session 3: Chapter 3 February 28, March 2 & 3 Mark 14: They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. 55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. 57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands. 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree. 60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you? 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One? 62 I am, said Jesus. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven. 63 The high priest tore his clothes. Why do we need any more witnesses? he asked. 64 You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think? They all condemned him as worthy of death. 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, Prophesy! And the guards took him and beat him. Personal Journaling 1. What evidence do the chief priests initially seek against Jesus? Why do you think that Jesus, for the most part, remains silent? Bible Study Exodus 3: 1-14 Because Jesus suffering and death did not conform to the conventional messianic expectations of the day, the Gospel writers frequently appealed to the Old Testament to make sense of Jesus mission and messiahship. 6

7 1. How does the burning bush story in Exodus 3 help make sense of Jesus response to Caiaphas in Mark 14: 62? Psalm 110: How does the allusion to Melchizedek give meaning to Jesus role as God s Messiah? Hebrews 5: Reflect on the scene of Jesus trial in light of these verses from Hebrews. How is it possible to hold to the claim that God is love and also hear Jesus anguished plea, Abba, Father ; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want but you want (Mark 14: 35)? Notes 7

8 Session 4: Chapter 4 March 6, 9 & 10 Mark 15: Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. 2 Are you the king of the Jews? asked Pilate. You have said so, Jesus replied. 3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, Aren t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of. 5 But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. 6 Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. 9 Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. 12 What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews? Pilate asked them. 13 Crucify him! they shouted. 14 Why? What crime has he committed? asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, Crucify him! 15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. Personal Journaling 1. What insights into Pilate s and Jesus character does this story offer? Bible Study Isaiah 52: 13-53: 12 The Gospels seem to suggest that Jesus saw a connection between his suffering and Isaiah s vision of the suffering servant. And as Adam Hamilton mentions in the book (page 64), the early church also made that connection. 8

9 1. Read the fourth Servant Song that begins with Isaiah 52:13 and reflect on how those words support or give meaning to the story of Jesus suffering. John 18: Compare Jesus response to Pilate in John s account with Jesus near silence in the Synoptic accounts. Acts 3: (Peter s Second Sermon); Acts 8: (Philip and the Ethiopian) In this sermon, Peter twice uses the term servant to refer to Christ and refers to the prophet s prediction that this man would suffer. The Scripture Philip explains to the Ethopian eunuch is one of the suffering servant passages in Isaiah. 3. Why do you think it was so important for the first Christians to acknowledge an Old Testament context for Jesus suffering and death? Notes 9

10 Session 5: Chapter 5, 6 & 7 March 13,16 &17 Mark 15: Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. 16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, Hail, king of the Jews! 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. The Crucifixion of Jesus 21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of the skull ). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. Personal Journaling 1. How do you imagine the scene in which Jesus was mocked? How did Jesus respond to this kind of cruelty? Bible Study Mark 15: 16 In this verse, Mark uses cohort, a term that originally meant one of the ten subdivisions of a Roman legion, several hundred strong. 1. What do you think Mark is trying to emphasize by giving us an image of Jesus surrounded by not just a few, but hundreds of brutal, mocking soldiers? Matthew 2: 11 (Compare Mark 15: 23) Myrrh is mentioned twice in the Gospels: once in Matthew s account of Jesus birth and again in Mark s account of Jesus crucifixion. 2. What connection do you see between these two offerings? 10

11 Luke 23: 26 (Compare Matthew 27: 32 and Mark 15: 21) Only Luke mentions that Simon of Cyrene carried Jesus cross behind Jesus. 3. What insights into the Passion narrative does that detail provide? Romans 5: Why does Paul think it is so crucial that Jesus death proves God s love for us? Notes 11

12 Week 6 of 24 Hours That Changed the World Good Friday: The Crucifixion Read Mark 15: It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the Jews. 27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 come down from the cross and save yourself! 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. He saved others, they said, but he can t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe. Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. The Death of Jesus 33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? (which means My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? ). 35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, Listen, he s calling Elijah. 36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. Now leave him alone. Let s see if Elijah comes to take him down, he said. 37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, [c] he said, Surely this man was the Son of God! Personal Journaling Rev. Hamilton, the author of our study, says that the cross is a reminder that: (1) we need saving, (2) God experiences suffering because of our brokenness, (3) God has chosen to be merciful and forgiving toward us, and (4) God loves us. 1. How do you respond to those reminders? Which one do you need to be reminded of most? 12

13 2. What is your reaction to the cross and Jesus being crucified? 3. What does the cross mean to you? Read: Pages Reflect: Describe your understanding of the sacrificial offering theory of the Atonement as described in this passage. 14 Week 6 of 24 Hours That Changed the World Easter Sunday Resurrection: Christ the Victor Mark 16:1-11, Jesus Has Risen 1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb? Mark 16 continued 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 Don t be alarmed, he said. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you. 8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. 9 When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it. Personal Journaling 1. In John s Gospel, the risen Christ appears in a garden and is mistaken for a gardener. If we are called to participate with Jesus, the Gardener, in restoring and bringing healing to the original garden of our world, what might that look like in your life? 14

15 2. How will you help to bring healing to the world and people around you? Read: Page 122 Reflect: The Gospel writers acknowledged that even those who saw the empty tomb struggled to understand Jesus resurrection. What part has doubt played in your beliefs about the Resurrection? Read: Page Reflect: What metaphor would you use to describe Christ s victory over sin and death? What meaning could the Christus Victor theory of Atonement have in your life? Bible Study Acts 9: 1-18 The Bible describes how Paul himself had an encounter with the resurrected Christ, an encounter that completely transformed him. 1. In what ways would you say your experience with the risen Christ has changed you? 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11 In these verses, Paul powerfully and succinctly proclaims the gospel of Jesus death and resurrection. 2. Summarize what you understand Paul to be saying and how that message grounds your own faith in Jesus. 15

16 1 Peter 3: Consider the idea that Jesus sought out those most alienated from God, even in the realm of the dead. 3. How might this idea contribute to your understanding of Jesus mission in the world? Closing Prayer L: Let us pray All: O God, who by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light: Grant that we, who have been raised with him, may abide in his presence and rejoice in the hope of eternal glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be dominion and praise for ever and ever.
