Revelation Devotional -- Day 1 Revelation 2:1-7 1 "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands: 2 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. 3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. 4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. 5 Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. 6 But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. Jesus has power and authority over his church. It is he who holds the seven stars in his right hand. He is with his followers -- he walks among them. He is concerned about and speaks to the specific circumstances his people face! The seven churches addressed in Revelation 2-3 were actual churches that existed in the late first century, but they are representative of all churches, and the words spoken to them carry meaning and exhortation to us as well. In this passage, we hear Jesus commending the Ephesians perseverance, purity, and hard work. He identifies with their rejection of the practices of the Nicolaitans, a sect which compromised their faith in order to engage in the sinful lifestyle of the surrounding culture. Sounds like this church was doing pretty well But when we get to the bottom line, Jesus desires our hearts he wants a first-love relationship with us. Paul had commended an earlier generation of the church at Ephesus for its love for God (Ephesians 1:15); but now, a second generation of believers had begun to lose their zeal. Perhaps other pursuits or commitments had begun to compete for God s place in their hearts does that sound familiar? Jesus exhorts this church (and us) to repent to change course and return to their first love. The reward is life a true life in the presence of God.
Revelation Devotional -- Day 2 Revelation 2: "To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. 9 I know your afflictions and your poverty yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death. Regardless of how outward circumstances may appear, Jesus is in control. He is the First and the Last. He is the One who conquered death, and is alive today! Jesus does not stand aloof from your difficulty or trial, but he knows your afflictions and your poverty. And, in spite of hardship, he calls you rich! How hard is for us to see our circumstances with spiritual eyes. How hard it is to feel his presence with us when we re in the middle of the storm! And yet Jesus calls us to see and live as he does without fear. Be faithful, Jesus says, even to the point of death. The church at Smyrna experienced persecution from a Jewish population opposed to Christianity, as well as a non-jewish population dedicated to the cult of Roman emperor-worship. Neither group made life easy for these early Christians. Smyrna was also home to athletic competitions of the day; a victory wreath or crown was the winner s reward. Jesus promises a crown of life to his followers who are faithful in spite of persecution. Jesus comforts us with the truth that no matter what we may face in this life, we will participate in his victory in the end!
Revelation Devotional -- Day 3 Revelation 2: "To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. 13 I know where you live where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city where Satan lives. 14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality. 15 Likewise you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it. This passage reveals Jesus as the one who has ultimate authority and power. In John s time, the double-edged sword was the Roman tool for exercising their authority and judgment. It was important for the Christian citizens of Pergamum to remember that Jesus is the one who has all authority! Their city was home to many pagan cults and their practices, to the extent that this city is referred to as Satan s throne. The believers of Pergamum are true to the name of Jesus. Yet there were some among them who gave in to conformity with the surrounding culture. Jesus word to them is simple: repent. In our culture today, we do not have to resist pagan idol worship or eating food sacrificed to idols. But if Jesus wrote a letter to our church today, what would he say? What issues of pride, immorality, deceit or justice would he confront with the sword of his mouth? Jesus wants 100% of our hearts loyalty and affections. Manna was given as God s provision to the Israelites when they were in the wilderness, vulnerable and completely dependent upon Him. We may be tempted to turn to a substitute instead an idol of our own making -- but only God s manna will provide what we truly need. This is what dependence on God is all about. We turn to idols when we believe lies about our identity or doubt God s ability to provide what we need. But Jesus knows what we need and he knows who we are, intimately and deeply. It is He who is able to reward us with a new name that reflects who he has created us to be.
Revelation Devotional -- Day 4 Revelation 2: "To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first. 20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. 21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. 24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan's so-called deep secrets (I will not impose any other burden on you): 25 Only hold on to what you have until I come. 26 To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations 27 'He will rule them with an iron scepter; he will dash them to pieces like pottery' just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Jesus is revealed in this passage as one who has authority and power! He sees all. He searches hearts and minds. He does not tolerate sin; much less, anyone who leads others astray from God into sin. This includes not only idolatry and immorality, but also false teaching. Jesus exhortation to this church is to hold onto what they have -- the simple truth of the gospel that they had received. Today, the church faces many competing worldviews that vie for our allegiance. Some of this influence is overt, but some is subtle and gradual, like the frog in the kettle. We, like the church in Thyatira, must be alert and hold on to what we have until Jesus returns.
Revelation Devotional -- Day 5 Revelation 3:1-6 1 "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. 4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Jesus holds the seven spirits of God (another title for the Holy Spirit) and the seven stars (leaders of the seven churches). He has been given authority in heaven and on earth. It is this one in authority who warns the church in Sardis that they are spiritually dead! Wake up! Sardis was a wealthy city, and the church there had a reputation for health and life. Yet this church is the only one of the seven mentioned in Revelation 2-3 for which Jesus has no word of commendation. Jesus pleads with them to return to what they had received when they first believed. They should pursue spiritual life -- God is not through with them. In our culture today, just like in the first century, prosperity and wealth can mask spiritual poverty. Jesus is not impressed with wealth, even though it so easily skews our own perceptions. Instead, we are to overcome sin and walk with Jesus. Our promise from God is that when we walk with Jesus, we will be dressed in white a symbol of purity and we will have life, acknowledged by Jesus before the Father in heaven.
Revelation Devotional -- Day 6 Revelation 3: "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth. 11 I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. 12 Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. 13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Jesus holds the key of David, the authority of the coming kingdom of God. It is Jesus who opens the door to this new kingdom, and no one can shut it. It is also Jesus who closes the door at the final judgment, and no one can open it again. To the church in Philadelphia, which had little strength, Jesus promised an open door for them they would participate in his kingdom as they kept his word. Even when we feel as if we have little strength, or are tempted to wonder what we can contribute to God s work, we should remember that it is Jesus who opens doors! Jesus commends Philadelphian believers to their patient endurance and keeping his commands and overcoming opposition. The promise Jesus made to them is also for all who overcome: we will be included in the new Jerusalem, secure as citizens of the city of God.
Revelation Devotional -- Day 7 Revelation 3: "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm neither hot nor cold I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. 21 To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." Laodicea was a rich city. It was famous for its banking, textiles and medicines. However, the city suffered from water problems water had to be brought to the city via aqueduct from hot springs. By the time the water reached Laodicea, it was a disgusting lukewarm neither hot nor cold. Jesus uses this as a word picture for the deeds of the Laodicean church, and threatened to spit them from his mouth! Because of their wealth, the Laodiceans did not perceive their own spiritual poverty. Jesus challenges them to find true riches, gold refined in the fire, in himself. In a similar way, the Laodicaens were very proud of the cloth-making and the eye-ointment they had become wealthy from. Jesus again exhorts them to buy clothes from him to cover their spiritual nakedness and shame, and to buy salve for their eyes to heal their spiritual blindness. The One who is the ruler of God s creation rebukes the Laodicaen church out of love. He desires a heart-to-heart fellowship with any who will open the door to him! What was true for the Laodicaens then is true for us now: if we will turn from our self-sufficiency and spiritual poverty, Jesus will give us true gold he will clothe us and he will open our eyes to see.
