WHEN TROUBLE COMES

for this Job 5:6,7 Job 14:1,2 Psalm 34:15-19 John 16: Corinthians 4:8-10 Life is a real adventure even for believers. When you study God s Word, you quickly discover that many of God s people came face to face with all manner of difficult circumstances. In fact, it was not unusual that just prior to some of the most dramatic victories recorded in scripture, the circumstances being faced seemed absolutely impossible. The question is: What do you do when trouble comes? There is a biblical blueprint to consider. YOU WILL FACE TROUBLE! Lesson #1 Full Of Trouble : God s word declares that difficulties and obstacles are a part of day to day living here on earth. Of The Righteous : Just because we are living for God does not mean we are exempt from facing trouble. You Shall Have Tribulation : Christ wanted his disciples to be aware that as they faced the future, they would need to learn to successfully deal with all manner of troubles. I refuse to sink into an ocean of discouragement and despair just because there are storm clouds on the horizon of my life. Let the winds blow and the thunder roll, for I am determined to discover God s plan for total victory in the face of any and all difficulties! 1.) According to Job 5:7, what does a person face even from the moment of birth? 2.) On the lines below write down the words you find in Job 14:1. 3.) Of course when it comes to those who are living for the Lord, Psalm 34:19 clearly reveals we are exempt from having to deal with trouble. YES NO 4.) Jesus himself made it quite clear that his own disciples would face times of trouble in this life. Notice John 16:33. In this world ye shall have. 5.) In 2 Corinthians 4:8,9 the apostle Paul even goes so far as to describe some of the troubles that Christians encounter. Read these verses then list below the problems he mentions. We are (meaning to press upon or to squeeze) (meaning to be confused or puzzled) (meaning to be harassed and oppressed) (meaning to be put or thrown down) 6.) In the very next verse, when we go through times of trouble, who does Paul say we are identifying with? In other words, who else faced times of trouble while walking on this earth? 7.) Now is Paul having a pity party in the passage we have just studied, or is he actually encouraging believers to prepare for victory in the midst of difficult times? 8.) Are you presently facing difficulties in your life? YES NO

for this Psalm 34:17-19 John 16: Corinthians 4:8-18 The Lord Delivers : A clear promise that God specializes in removing or snatching his people out of the grip of turmoil and disaster when they call on him for help. From All Their Troubles : The good news is that the God of the Bible can handle any and all kinds of trouble that we may face in this life. I Have Overcome : This declaration given by the Lord to his followers stated that no matter what troubles they would face in this life, victory had already been secured. I choose to believe no matter how bad things may appear in this life, not only am I going to be victorious, but I am already victorious because the Lord has secured the victory in advance on my behalf! Now there are those who constantly seem to feed on trouble. They are quick to see and hear trouble at a moments notice. They find themselves trusting nothing or no one, and continually live a life plagued by fear, wondering what terrible calamity will pounce on them next. It s important to note that even though God s Word declares we will face trouble in this life, it also goes on to say there is victory for the child of God! Imagine seeing your problems as opportunities instead of obstacles or disasters. Now there s an unusual approach to life s difficulties. YOU CAN HAVE VICTORY! 1.) Return back to Psalm 34:19. Now write this entire verse on the lines below. 2.) Also read Psalm 34:17. After viewing both verses, would you say God s promise of deliverance covers some or all of our troubles? All of our troubles Some of our troubles 3.) When Jesus was speaking of tribulations to his disciples in John 16:33, was he trying to encourage them or discourage them? 4.) Specifically what encouraging words did Jesus share to his disciples? 5.) Although it may appear that in 2 Corinthians 4:8,9 Paul was forced to admit the basic reality of troubles in this life; notice he does not admit defeat. We are troubled on every side, yet not ; (not crushed)...perplexed, but not in ; (not trapped) Persecuted, but not ; (not left down)...cast down, but not ; (not ruined) Lesson #2 6.) Now look at the last 3 verses of this chapter. When we are in the midst of crisis, do we focus our attention on the disasters coming against us, or do we keep our attention on the things of God? 7.) Would you say that much of the Bible clearly shows our God specializes in helping people secure victory in the face of trouble? 8.) Can you think of at least one example?

for this Psalm 37:1,2 James 4:7 John 14:1 John 14:27 Matthew 24:6-8 1 Peter 5:6-10 Fret Not : In the face of trouble the challenge from God is to refuse to surrender ones faith to an atmosphere of fear and worry. Resist The Devil : Since Satan s desire is to gain an advantage over our lives during times of trouble; we must not only be ready to face trouble courageously, but also be ready to face the one who is our primary troublemaker. Like A Roaring Lion : The key word here is roaring. The devil uses the tactic of fear to uncover those most easily troubled. According to the Bible, I don t have to allow fear and worry to gain the upper hand in my life. With God s help I can stand up to trouble and even put trouble on the run! We must understand that Satan will use the tactic of trouble to accomplish at least 3 things while we walk through this life. It is his desire and design To Distract You - Satan uses trouble to get your attention away from God! To Discourage You - Satan uses trouble to shake your confidence in God! To Defeat You - Satan uses trouble to influence you to give up on God! Now with that in mind, what strategy does God offer those who desire to overcome the impact of life s many difficulties? Whether you know it or not God s Word has the prescription for all our troubles. In fact, Psalm 37 is probably one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible dealing with this subject. Let s take a look. DON T BE TROUBLED! / Psalm 37:1 1.) Would you agree that in the very beginning of Psalm 37, the initial challenge or command is to make a firm decision that we are not going to allow trouble to trouble us? 2.) To refuse reminds us of the command to resist as seen in James 4:7. Take the time to write the last half of this verse below. 3.) If we are easily upset when problems come our way, then fear and worry can settle in and grip our lives. No wonder there are many instances when God s Word gives the command to refuse to become troubled. John 14:1 Let not your : ye believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:27...Let not your, neither let it be afraid. Matthew 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that 4.) Now in 1 Peter 5:8, how is Satan pictured in this passage? ye be not 5.) In the animal kingdom, isn t it the roar of the lion that commands attention and strikes fear in the minds of other creatures close by? YES NO Lesson #3 6.) If we react to trouble by becoming afraid; are we allowing Satan to gain an advantage? 7.) In fact, according to verse 9, what are we specifically instructed to do when Satan uses the fear factor to get an advantage over us? Run and hide Become a nervous wreck Resist the Devil

for this Psalm 37:3,40 Proverbs 3:5,6 Psalm 118:5-9 Isaiah 26:3,4 Always remember that you must literally choose to resist when problems come your way. Face them and prepare to overcome them in the Lord. Once you ve determined not to give into worry and fear, you are ready to follow the blueprint for victory that God has established throughout the remainder of Psalm 37. HAVE CONFIDENCE IN GOD! / Psalm 37:3 (Trouble comes to shake your confidence in God!) Lesson #4 Trust In The Lord : The biblical strategy to overcome trouble in this life starts with leaning on and having an unshakeable confidence in the Lord. And Lean Not : A strategy for failure is to lean or depend upon mere human understanding and ability. Perfect Peace : Those who learn to put their complete trust in the Lord, even in the midst of difficulty, will find themselves saturated with a powerful overwhelming peace from God himself. And Saves Them : We must understand that God specializes in rescuing his people from trouble in this life. I have every reason to believe that God means what he says and says what he means. Therefore I can depend on him to keep his word and come to my rescue in times of trouble! 1.) What are the first four words of Psalm 37:3? 2.) In your own opinion, why is this so important when dealing with troubled times? 3.) Now we could simply stir up a little self confidence and believe that we can handle problems on our own. What does the bible say about this approach? Write the words found in Proverbs 3:5 on the lines below. 4.) According to Psalm 118:8, in the midst of trouble who is more dependable? You can always depend on people. You can always depend on God. 5.) Keep in mind that if we are easily upset when problems come our way, then fear and worry will consume our attention. As you read Isaiah 26:3, notice what God gives to combat our fears and worries when we put our complete trust in him. No wonder this is at the top of the list. Thou will keep him in, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he. 6.) Would you say that being able to remain calm, knowing God has everything in control, is extremely important in times of crisis? 7.) Notice that in Psalm 37:40 the Lord promises to help, to deliver, as well as to save those who do what? 8.) From now on when trouble stares you in the face, what action are you going to take? Become paralyzed with fear. Worry that it may be worse than it looks. Trust in the Lord knowing God is at work.

for this Psalm 37:4 Philippians 4:4 Nehemiah 8:9-12 Proverbs 17:22 Your complete confidence in the Lord as you face troubled times has headed you in the right direction. Despite what the devil would try to say, God can handle any and all kinds of problems. He is the God who delivers his people out of all their troubles! Now get ready to discover the next step towards absolute victory. ENJOY YOURSELF IN THE LORD! / Psalm 37:4 (Trouble comes to steal your joy!) Lesson #5 Delight Thyself : Dwelling on God s goodness and entering into God s presence must continue to be the focus of God s people in spite of any and all circumstances. Rejoice In The Lord : An open expression of God s goodness with a heart of thanksgiving and a voice of praise is a powerful prescription for anyone traveling through troubled times. Is Your Strength : The word strength in this passage refers to a place of security, a stronghold. In other words, our focus on the goodness of God becomes a place of safety and refuge from the impact of the trials of this life. Dear Lord: Since my troubles are no problem for you, and since I ve placed my total trust in you. I have every reason to rise up and rejoice! 1.) Notice God s next challenge found in Psalm 37:4. Write down the first half of this verse, then notice God s response as well. 2.) What are some common responses of people who find themselves facing crisis times? Sadness Discouragement Excitement 3.) Would you say that finding enjoyment in the midst of troubled times is a bit unusual? 4.) Now look up Philippians 4:4, then write this verse below. 5.) After taking a good close look at this passage, answer the following questions. * Is this a strong challenge or simply a request? _ * What or who are we to rejoice in? * Has the Lord changed just because our circumstances change? * Can we really enjoy the presence of the Lord during troubled times? 6.) In fact, in Nehemiah 8:10, notice what the Bible declares will result if a person continues to hold on to an attitude of rejoicing in God s goodness....for the is your. 7.) If that doesn t encourage you to remain joyful, then notice the unusual words found in Proverbs 17:22. Keep in mind that modern day research is proving this verse to be unusually accurate. A doeth good like a, but a broken spirit. 8.) Have you ever noticed people often seem to suffer more when they are sad and discouraged over problems they are facing?

for this Psalm 37:5,6 Isaiah 53:1-5 1 Peter 5:6,7 Matthew 11:28-30 Commit Thy Way : We are instructed to take the things of this life and roll them off on the Lord. Surely He Hath bore : Part of a prophetic statement revealing the purpose and plan for Christ s coming to this planet in the first place. He Careth for You : Here we see the motive or reason why Jesus Christ came to lift off of our shoulders the heavy burdens of this life. It s all because of his love for us. And I Will Give You Rest : The Lord offers his assistance in lightening the load of our lives so we can actually enjoy this life and not be so stressed or pressured by all that comes our way. Thank you Lord for not only your compassion, but also your willingness to personally bare the weight of my burdens in this life! If you haven t noticed already, the instructions given in Psalm 37 concerning what to do when trouble comes takes a person with a real determined spirit. We are not talking about just drifting through our problems, hoping everything will be alright. We re talking about taking a stand and refusing to allow difficulties and problems to defeat us! We choose refuse to lose our confidence and our joy in the Lord. Now let s take a look at what else can be done to gain total victory over our troubles in this life. TURN IT OVER TO THE LORD! / Psalm 37:5 (Trouble comes to weigh you down!) 1.) The opening phrase of Psalm 37:5 instructs us to do what? 2.) Since the word commit means to roll of on; could it be that the Lord seems willing to carry our heavy burdens for us? 3.) In fact, we see in Isaiah 53:4 that Jesus Christ came to offer himself as the burden bearer for the whole human race. Surely he (weakness) and (pains). 4.) Verse 5 goes on to share more about Jesus the burden bearer. Jesus was (bore our rebellion) (bore our perverted behavior) (bore our punishment) (bore wounds for our healing) 5.) Now after looking carefully at these two verses, does it appear that Jesus has shown himself willing to take upon himself our physical and spiritual concerns? YES NO Lesson #6 6.) In 1 Peter 5:7 we are given a personal invitation to give our troubles over to the Lord. Write this verse below. 7.) In fact, in Matthew 11:28-30 we see the heart of the Master concerning those who are burdened down with trouble. What does the Lord say in verse 30:? For my, and my.

for this Psalm 37:7 Numbers 9: Samuel 9:25-27 Psalm 46:9,10 Matthew 11:28-30 Mark 4:35-41 Philippians 4:6,7 Now if you are like a lot of people when facing a crisis, you find it can be very difficult to relax and experience a restful moment. Turmoil tends to bring about tension and great stress. Maybe you are a person who tends to even lose sleep when trouble comes. If that s the case, you will find this particular lesson to be a real source of help BE STILL IN HIS PRESENCE! / Psalm 37:7 (Trouble comes to ruin your rest!) Lesson #7 1.) Psalm 37:7 begins by simply instructing us to. Rest In The Lord : To rest or be still in the Lord, allows God to do what only he can do during times of great difficulty. The fact is our constant efforts of trying to solve our own problems can many times get in God s way. Be Still : The literal translation of this phrase means to let go, or in other words, release that which is hindering. I Will Give You Rest Notice not only does the Lord challenge us to rest, but he is ready and willing to even provide us with the rest that we need. Maybe it s time I stand back and simply get out of Gods way, allowing God the opportunity to do what only he can do! 2.) If there s ever a time when we desperately need to spend time in the presence of the Lord, it s during those days when troubles comes our way. Look up the following verses then draw a line from each verse to the appropriate phrase. Numbers 9:8 * We need to stop and remember how great our God is. 1 Samuel 9:27 * We need to stop and spend time with God in prayer. Psalm 46:10 * We need to stop and focus on God s Word. 3.) Notice in Matthew 11:28 Jesus promises rest to those who are burdened down with trouble. Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will. 4.) It would appear that Jesus himself was able to find rest when it looked as if everything was out of control. There is probably no clearer example of this than the story found in Mark 4: Answer the following questions below. * What kind of trouble did Jesus and his disciples encounter? * How serious of a crisis was it? * Were the disciples afraid for their very lives? * Would you say Jesus demonstrated a presence of peace in the midst of the storm? 5.) Now the reason why we need to move into his presence during our time of trouble is because in his presence there is peace, and where there is peace there is rest. Look at the beautiful promise in Philippians 4:6,7 given to those who choose to move into God s presence through seasons of prayer. Philippians 4:7 says:

for this Psalm 37:8 Ecclesiastes 7:9 Proverbs 14:17 Ephesians 4:30-32 Matthew 5:21-26 James 1:19,20 Psalm 103:8 Psalm 145:8 Grieve Not The Holy Spirit : What we must clearly understand is that a bad attitude not only affects others, but is offensive to the Spirit of God as well. Slow To Wrath : It s important to be a person who responds carefully and cautiously to what others say or do. The Lord Is...Slow To Anger : Instead of lashing out and giving us what we deserve, the Lord chooses first to respond with mercy and grace in hopes that he can somehow salvage our lives even though we have miserably failed and fallen short so often. What a prime example! Just because trouble crosses my path doesn t mean I have to lose my cool and make things worse! Becoming irritable and angry at those around you while going through difficult times accomplishes nothing. In fact, Satan no doubt gets a thrill seeing you fussing and feuding with family and friends instead of taking it out on him. It s time to tame that temper if you really want victory in your life. REFUSE TO BECOME ANGRY! / Psalm 37:8 (Trouble comes to drive you to cause trouble!) 1.) Does Psalm 37:8 request or command us to watch our temper? 2.) According to Ecclesiastes 7:9 and Proverbs 14:17, a person who easily becomes angry is described as acting 3.) Not only do we find the command to resist anger in the Old Testament. Notice the New Testament challenge as well. Write down Ephesians 4:31 below. 4.) Instead, according to the very next verse, what should our attitude always be? Critical Angry Disrespectful Kind 5.) Are you aware that being irritable and angry with others, even while facing difficult time, affects your relationship with God? The reason we are told in Ephesians 4:31 to put away anger is because of how our anger affects the Holy Spirit. Take a look at verse 30. And the Holy Spirit of God 6.) Jesus went so far as to explain that having a bad temper was totally unacceptable. Notice his words in Matthew 5:21,22. What two actions in these verses will bring a person face to face with God s judgment? Lesson #8 7.) Now take note of the advice given in James 1:19. As Christians we find in this particular verse that we are to be 8.) Would you agree that to become angry during troubled times only creates more trouble? 9.) Finally let s consider God s example in Psalm 103:8 as well as Psalm 145:8. After reading these passages, what do we learn about God?

for this Psalm 37:27 Proverbs 24:29 1 Thessalonians 5:15 1 Peter 2:21-24 Luke 23:32-37 Matthew 7:12 Sad to say, but there are those who do more than just become irritable during times of trouble. Some respond by blaming others for their problems, and when that happens it s only a matter of time that a decision to get even soon arises. Bitterness towards others and the desire to give someone a taste of their own medicine only turns trouble into disaster. Once again Satan is pleased when we decide to do something destructive instead of something constructive. ONLY DO GOOD! / Psalm 37:27 (Trouble comes to get you into more trouble!) Lesson #9 Depart From Evil : We should choose not to respond to trouble by causing more trouble. Reviled Not Again : As our example, Christ demonstrated that a person should not choose to go down the road of retaliation. Father Forgive Them : Powerful words from the lips of Christ while hanging on the cross. Displaying a heart of love instead of hatred towards those who had come against him. This Is The Law : God s Word establishes a plan of action that requires us to treat others as we would want to be treated, no matter what the circumstances Since causing trouble brings more trouble back on me; why should I make life more difficult than it already is! 1.) There are actually two commands in this verse. What are they? 2.) Would you agree in every situation there is always a right thing and a wrong thing to do? 3.) Notice the words in Proverbs 24:29. In this passage, what is the wrong response concerning someone who may have brought trouble into your life? 4.) In fact, notice the clear command found in 1 Thessalonians 5:15. * What not to do.. * What to do.. 5.) There is probably no greater example of this than Christ himself. During the worst crisis of his life he refused to lash out at others and get even. Read the words of 1 Peter 2:21-24, then answer the following questions below. * What event is this passage describing? * Did Jesus choose to face this crisis and not blame others? * Was Jesus setting an example for others to follow? * What good was accomplished through this horrible experience of Christ? 6.) While hanging on the cross even Christ s own words displayed the goodness that remained in his heart in spite of the tragedy he was facing. Take a few moments and read the account found in Luke 23:32-37, then write down the words spoken by the Lord. 7.) According to Matthew 7:12, how are we to treat others at all times? The same way they treat us The way we want to be treated

for this Psalm 37:34 Psalm 27:14 Psalm 130:1-6 Proverbs 20:22 Psalm 40:1-3 Isaiah 40:28-31 Wait On The Lord: Patiently waiting on God with an unwavering expectation and total confidence in his ability and willingness to help. I Waited Patiently: The psalmist declares his willingness to be patient for God s response to his prayer; fully confident the answer was on the way. They That Wait... Shall: Confirmation that our confidence in the Lord brings about a personal response from the Lord. And you thought all you could do was worry when troubles came knocking at your door. Instead you are being given a powerful strategy from the Lord and all you have to do is begin to put that strategy to work in your life from this point on. Yes there can be victory in the midst of trouble! Now there is one more important ingredient to consider as you prepare to face those troubles down the road. It s the step that puts faith right in the middle of it all. Pay very close attention to God s final challenge! WAIT WITH EXPECTATION! / Psalm 37:34 (Trouble comes to shatter your faith!) 1.) The first four words of Psalm 37:34 says: 2.) Keep in mind we are talking about having an expectation that God is involved, in control, and about to do whatever is necessary to bring you through. Notice the words in the following passages. Psalm 27:14 Psalm 130:5 Proverbs 20:22 on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart I for the Lord, my soul doth, and in his word do I hope....but on the Lord, and he shall save thee. 3.) King David had a great faith in the Lord, even during crisis times. Note the passage in Psalm 40:1-3. Specifically what did he do in times of trouble? 4.) Did his waiting on the Lord with great expectation pay off? 5.) List 5 things God did for David as he kept his faith in the Lord? Lesson #10 * I must possess an unwavering confidence in the Lord in spite of what I feel, what I see, or what I hear. My expectation in what God can do must outweigh any and all my fears! * * * * 6.) Finally, notice God s promise to anyone who will wait on the Lord with an unshakeable faith in God. Write down the words of Isaiah 40:31 below.

for this Psalm 20:1-4 Psalm 91:1-16 Shadow Of The Almighty: Those who choose to live and walk in God s Presence can expect to enjoy the benefits of God s peace and protection. He Shall Cover Thee: The term cover in this passage means to surround or border with a hedge; providing a place of safety. His Angels: Here we discover that God has assigned angelic beings to accompany us as we walk through this life. I Will Deliver Him: God not only hears and sees the troubles that come against his people; he also has promised to devise strategies that deliver or free us from the entanglements and dangers that we encounter. What a comfort to know that God has personally promised to not only watch over my life, but also to intervene in dramatic ways if necessary! For most of this series we have focused our attention on what we should do when trouble comes our way. Hopefully the next time you come face to face with adversity, you will apply the truths you have learned. Not only does God s Word outline what we should do; but the Bible also explains what God will do as a result. Prepare for some exciting news! NOTICE WHAT GOD WILL DO 1.) Notice the expectation the psalmist had in the Lord as he prayed in Psalm 20:1-4. Answer the following questions below. * Can we expect God to hear our cry? * Can we expect God to defend us? * Can we expect God to send help? * Can we expect God to strengthen us? * Can we expect God to remember & receive our worship? * Can we expect God to even answer our hearts desire? 2.) One of the most commonly read passages of scripture for those who go through crisis times is Psalm 91. Notice the beautiful picture of God s protection in these verses. Specifically focus on verses 1, 4 & 5. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide. He shall cover thee, and under shalt thou trust Lesson #11 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror, nor for the. 3.) In this chapter we see not only does God become personally involved in our time of crisis; he also dispatches others to assist us as well. After reading verses 11 & 12, who are these individuals and what are they assigned to do? 4.) For those who love the Lord, what does God promise to do? Notice verse 14. Nothing at all A little pity Will deliver or rescue them 5.) When the child of God calls on the Lord in time of trouble, what four things will God do according to verse 15?

In fact, he is always ready to make our problems his. Praise The Lord : We need to realize that our praise and worship has a powerful impact in the realm of the spirit, just as it did in this situation. Valley Of Berachah : Their valley of crisis became known as the valley of blessing. God turns our troubles into triumph. After evaluating the situation fully, what words in verse 12 did King Jehoshaphat use to describe just how bad things were at that point in time? 2.) Even though the situation looked disastrous, instead of focusing the attention on the disaster at hand, what did Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah decide to do? Look at the final phrase of verse 12? (Note the picture of prayer found in verses 3,4, & 13. What an example!) 3.) The Lord responds to their cry and encourages them with some most unusual words found in verses 15 & Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is. Ye shall not in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord 4.) Instead of being consumed with worry and fear, what did God s people immediately begin doing after they heard God s words of encouragement? They ran and hid They panicked They worshipped God 5.) Who led the people towards the battlefield? 6.) What were the words of their song as they marched forward? 7.) What took place when they began to sing unto the Lord? Mass confusion among the enemy Lesson #12 The enemy killed each other 8.) When God s people finally arrived on the battlefield, what did they see?
