God s Promise - Genesis 28:15 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.

God s Protection - Genesis 32:1-2 1 Now as Jacob went on his way, the angels of God met him. 2 Jacob said when he saw them, This is God s camp. So he named that place Mahanaim.
God s Protection - Genesis 32:1-2 1 Now as Jacob went on his way, the angels of God met him. 2 Jacob said when he saw them, This is God s camp. So he named that place Mahanaim. What is the ministry of Angels? To protect and provide for God s saints. Hebrews 1:14 II Kings 6:15-17 Matthew 4:11
God s Protection - Genesis 32:1-2 1 Now as Jacob went on his way, the angels of God met him. 2 Jacob said when he saw them, This is God s camp. So he named that place Mahanaim (two camps).
When we are drained physically, spiritually, and emotionally, God will protect and provide for us. Physically: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). Spiritually: But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you (John 14:26). Emotionally: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
Jacob s Plan (A) for Provision 32:3-8 Jacob s Preparation 32:3-5 Jacob s Desperation 32:6-8
Jacob s Preparation - Genesis 32:3-5 3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom. 4 He also commanded them saying, Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now; 5 I have oxen and donkeys and flocks and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.
Jacob s Desperation - Genesis 32:6-8 6 The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and the herds and the camels, into two companies; 8 for he said, If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the company which is left will escape.
Three Explanations for the 400 Men 1. Esau Expects Deception 2. Messenger Mix-Up 3. Esau Wants Revenge
Jacob s Prayer for Provision 32:9-12 Remembers God s Promise 32:9 Remembers God s Provision 32:10 Forgets God s Faithfulness 32:11-12
Remembers God s Promise Genesis 32:9 9 Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will prosper you,
Remembers God s Provision Genesis 32:10 10 I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant; for with my staff only I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies.
Forgets God s Faithfulness Genesis 32: Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, that he will come and attack me and the mothers with the children. 12 For You said, I will surely prosper you and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be numbered.
You cannot be fearless until you are faithful
Jacob s Plan (B) for Provision 32:13-20 Preparing a False Propitiation 32:13-16 Offering a False Atonement 32:17-20a Expecting a False Assurance 32:20b
Preparing a False Propitiation Genesis 32: So he spent the night there. Then he selected from what he had with him a present for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. 16 He delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, Pass on before me, and put a space between droves.
Preparing a False Propitiation Genesis 32: So he spent the night there. Then he selected from what he had with him a present (minchah; offering, gift, tribute) for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. 16 He delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, Pass on before me, and put a space between droves.
Offering a False Atonement Genesis 32:17-20a 17 He commanded the one in front, saying, When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong? 18 then you shall say, These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us. 19 Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, After this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and you shall say, Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goes before me
Offering a False Atonement Genesis 32:17-20a 17 He commanded the one in front, saying, When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong? 18 then you shall say, These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us. 19 Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, After this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and you shall say, Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goes before me
Offering a False Atonement Genesis 32:17-20a 17 He commanded the one in front, saying, When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong? 18 then you shall say, These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us. 19 Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, After this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and you shall say, Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us. For he said, I will appease (kaphar; make atonement for sin/ cover his face) him with the present that goes before me
Expecting a False Assurance Genesis 32:20b 20b... Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.
False Salvation 1. Professes Esau as lord 2. Prepares an offering for his sins 3. The offering goes before him 4. Expects it to atone for his sins 5. Wishes the offering to veil his lord s face from previous sin 6. Hope of restoring community with his lord. True Salvation 1. Profess Jesus as Lord 2. Accept His offering for our sins 3. Christ goes before us 4. Makes complete atonement 5. Christ s sacrifice veils our sin from God s face 6. Restores an eternal community with our Lord.
Jacob s Plan (C) for Provision 32:21-23 Protect the Covenant 32:21-23
Protect the Covenant Genesis 32: So the present passed on before him, while he himself spent that night in the camp. 22 Now he arose that same night and took his two wives and his two maids and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.
Symbolic Seas, Streams, and Rivers 1. Jordan Transitioning in life or out of life 2. Red Sea Deliverance from a heavy circumstance 3. Jabbok To be entirely emptied
God fights with us So that He can fight for us
God s Plan for Provision 32:24-29 Provokes Jacob s Surrender 32:24 Demands Jacob s Surrender 32:25 Blesses Jacob s Surrender 32:26-29
Provokes Jacob s Surrender Genesis 32:24 24 Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. Angel s Goal for Jacob 1. Surrender self-sufficiency 2. Realize the true source of all blessings Hosea 12:3-6
God Demands Jacob s Surrender Genesis 32:25 25 When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him.
God Demands Jacob s Surrender Genesis 32:25 25 When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him.
God Blesses Jacob s Surrender Genesis 32: Then he said, Let me go, for the dawn is breaking. But he said, I will not let you go unless you bless me. 27 So he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28 He said, Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.
John 21: So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these? He said to Him, Yes, Lord; You know that I love You. He said to him, Tend My lambs. 16 He said to him again a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love Me? He said to Him, Yes, Lord; You know that I love You. He said to him, Shepherd My sheep. 17 He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love Me? Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, Do you love Me? And he said to Him, Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You. Jesus said to him, Tend My sheep.
God Blesses Jacob s Surrender Genesis 32: Then Jacob asked him and said, Please tell me your name. But he said, Why is it that you ask my name? And he blessed him there.
Jacob s Praise for God s Provision Genesis 32: So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved. 31 Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penile, and he was limping on his thigh. 32 Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Jacob s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
Four Permanent Reminders 1. Place: Peniel ( The Face of God ) 2. Person: Israel ( God Fights ) 3. Pain: Limp (Sins of former walk) 4. Practice: Dietary Restrictions (national conviction)
Jacob. Heel Grabber Deceiver Rejected by father Outcast Servant Anxious Fearful No foundation False salvation Emptied, alone, crippled Israel. Recognized God s Provision Recognized God s Protection Received true salvation Received by family Remained imperfect Reminded of Jacob Ancestor of the Messiah
Challenge 1. What is it that you are not trusting God with today? 2. What is it that you are trusting in more than God today?
