Poster Child 1 Corinthians 6:12-20; Leviticus 19:28; Exod 21:6 Central Idea: How can I honor God with my body as His Word commands? Introduction When I was a kid, I was one of those annoying ones. That phase that kids go through where they question everything and ask why all the time, I never stopped doing that. When my parents laid down the law, I wanted the commentary on why. Now I was wrong in thinking that if I didn t like their reasoning that I could disobey their rules, but it is a healthy practice to understand why a rule is put into place. Curiosity is a good thing in most circumstances. Laws eventually become inexplicable traditions that no one knows the reason for doing. If you never explain why a law is put in place, but continue to obey that law without question, eventually generations down the road, people will wonder why they do that. Some laws aren t eternal, but work best in certain situations. For instance, I wear a very heavy coat in winter time, because it s cold outside. I don t wear that winter coat in the summer time because it s warm outside. That is a tradition that I live by. But the reasoning is clear. What you will find is that the best laws have a good explanation that you can revisit. The not so good laws sometimes don t even make sense where they are instituted. Add to this conversation how to live holy in our world and culture. One of the more popular practices of our day is that of tattooing and body piercings. People now get what they call sleeves, which are tattoos the whole way up and down their arms. People are now piercing all parts of their body, and yes I said ALL! That s got to hurt! But how do we as believers address these issues for our lives? Text 1 Corinthians 6: All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, The two will become one flesh. 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 1

a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. I. Holiness brings us to a decision about what glorifies God and what doesn t. A. There are three categories that holiness is concerned with in our lives. i. The first step in seeking to be holy before the Lord is to find out what the Bible says about whatever God is laying on your heart as an issue. When it comes to this current trend of tattooing, the Bible has one verse specifically mentioning tattoos. ii. However, there are a couple of other verses that may refer to it as well. We will look at all of that in a couple of minutes, but I want to lay down some principles of how to deal with what we find in the Word. iii. Body piercings are a practice that is seen throughout the Bible, but not in the same way that they are done today. I ll explain that in a minute as well, but we start with principles. iv. We have been talking about being in a relationship with God rather than following rules set up by others. We need to seek God for what He wants us to do. But anyone who is involved in a relationship of any kind knows that there are rules. v. But these rules are part of the relationship. They do not stand on their own. So we come to an issue like tattooing or piercing, and as we search the Scriptures, we find some things, but how do we interpret it and use it for God s glory and pleasure? vi. I believe that the holiness God desires from us can fall into three categories: 1. Negative Holiness Sometimes there is outright sin that God wants us to stop doing. This is what I consider negative holiness. These are the things we are commanded not to do. It is clear in Scripture that God is not pleased with these things. These are things that we can speak to one another about and help one another keep free of. Sin is so obvious that when it is brought to our attention, we must repent to continue in holiness. There is no dispute. These are things like murder, adultery, and the like. 2. Positive Holiness There are other things in the Bible that are positively commanded, like Love your neighbor as yourself or keep you mind focused on these things. Another might be Submit to God, resist the devil. These are positive holiness commands, things that we are expected to be doing. We can exhort one another with these positive holiness commands. P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 2

3. Personal Holiness There are, however, a number of issues that the Bible either does not speak to or give us a yes or no answer on. These issues can be disputed and we can go back and forth all day on what the Bible says. We can make the mistake of speaking from the Bible s silence or forcing our own personal values or standards on others. These can cause division and problems among us. vii. In the matter of personal holiness, issues which are not as clear in Scripture, I believe that there are three very helpful guidelines for us to remember as we interact with one another. 1. First, let us allow the Holy Spirit to speak about these issues to His disciples rather than force them into our system. Jesus spent most of His negative comments on the religions leaders who forced their rules on others. 2. Second, let us be loving and kind in presenting our own standards, explaining why these are our standards, praying for one another as they search out what God expects of them, and most importantly, not judging or treating others differently as they work out their own salvation with fear and trembling. Love can do a lot of good for them, but judgment only separates us! 3. Third, let us respect those who have taken the time and effort to find out what God s mind on a matter is for them and who are being obedient to what they have discovered in that matter. Let us live in harmony. As long as we are agreeing on the Positive and Negative Holiness, we can give them the benefit of the doubt. Let us continue to build up one another! And let s let God be in charge of what He expects from all His children. Text Romans 14:13-16, Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 3

B. There are principles that we can follow when the Bible does not speak directly to an issue we face. i. There is a wonderful part of Scripture that helps us in using the Bible s principles when we are not given a straight up command one way or the other on an issue we seek to discover God s mind on. ii. It s called by Paul matters of conscience. Paul explains them in Romans 14. He is discussing one of the big issues of his day, meat sacrificed to idols and he lays down principles of matters of conscience. iii. Let us not forget that Paul is discussing matters that the Old Testament law has put in place. There are laws against reveling before idols in food, laws against eating meat with the blood in it, etc. This is important for our tattoo topic. iv. Despite these laws that are already in God s Word and written, Paul gives us this idea of matters of conscience. He has been explaining how the law does not save us in Romans, and so he tells us to not judge one another, to consider how each of us will react to one another, and to consider our own standards. v. First, we are not to judge how another person walks with God. I am not the Holy Spirit. I cannot tell others what God will tell them. They must hear God speak to them! vi. I believe that we present ourselves a grave danger by speaking for the Holy Spirit. How will someone learn to hear God s voice if they can skip the hard steps of tarrying in His presence for an answer when they can just ask some authority in the church? We can set their growth in Christ back by years if they don t learn to seek God for answers! vii. Next, we can be guides without being judges. I am about to tell you what Scripture does and does not say about tattoos and piercings, and a number of other common things throughout this series. But I m not making the call on what God wants for you. That s up to you, and I ll respect you for whatever God tells you and what He puts as a standard for your conscience, just as I expect you won t judge me. viii. I think that one of the greatest sins that we commit as believers is judging others based on our standards of holiness, rather than God s standards. As I mentioned, there are yes and no answers in Scripture, and those are clear and fine to bring out. But there are also unclear areas that we should all be searching for God s answer. ix. This is not some subjective approach to holiness either. Let me give an example. I have no trouble with alcohol. I am not remotely interested in it, don t wonder what it tastes like, have never had it, and don t want it. You could put the finest wine or beer in front of me and I don t care. My P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 4

standard of not even interacting with alcohol could be seen by some as some awesome high standard that is impossible for others. Someone God saved out of alcoholism, who can t just have one beer, might think me some god or saint for my ability to have alcohol in front of me without drinking it! But that s not it at all. I m just not interested. I didn t struggle with it in my past. They could confuse my disinterest for holiness. x. We all struggle in different ways before we are saved, and those weak spots, those sore spots where the devil has made in-roads into our character and holiness, those are spots we must maintain discipline and high standards in so that we don t fall. Every person has different weak spots. And we can t presume to know them unless we get past judging to fellowshipping and ministering to them, until we are able to be trustworthy for them to ask us to help them in their struggles. If we judge them, we re not trustworthy and God can t use us to help them stay strong! xi. There is also an interesting relationship that needs to develop for us as believers and in our churches and in our interactions with one another. It is the same paradigm that we use to grow from infancy to adulthood. xii. In 1 Corinthians 13:11, Paul talks about growing up from childhood to manhood. He talks about putting away childish things. Elsewhere in the Bible, like in Hebrews, we are urged to go from milk to solid food. xiii. There is a growth as a disciple that starts in infancy and goes through adolescence and into adulthood. When you are new in Christ, you need someone to disciple you, to guide you, to help you find out what God wants and the Bible says. xiv. I believe it s imperative for us to speak authoritatively only on the positive and negative holiness the Scriptures give, and to teach principles of finding what God expects from us in these other areas of personal holiness. As a guide to a new disciple, let s spend our time on the clear Scriptures, and then teach them about matters of conscience. xv. There are so many who should be adults in Christ who are still infants, still stuck on the minor things. And part of the reason for this is that the church has not taught them how to think for themselves, research for themselves, and seek God for themselves. xvi. So at the very least, consider how I deal with tattoos and body piercings to fit into this personal holiness section of our lives, and my methods are much more important than my conclusions. Here is my method for the personal holiness seeking: 1. Allow the Holy Spirit to bring up the issue perhaps through engaging a desire you have to get a tattoo or body piercings. P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 5

2. Search the Scriptures for what God says or doesn t say on the issue of tattoos and piercings. Is there a clear word for or against it? Where is that located? What do you feel the Spirit teaching you through your study? 3. Pray and seek God for His answer for you on these matters. Pay close attention to your conscience and how you feel about the matter. That will weigh heavily on His standard for you in this area. 4. Find out what others have said about them and their standards. There is wisdom in learning different perspectives on a subject. But take lightly others perspectives because this is a personal matter. 5. Make a decision and keep to it. Maintain that standard in your life and allow God to convict you when you fall short or get weak. Ask others that you can trust to help you stay accountable. Text Leviticus 19: You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes. 27 You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. 28 You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the LORD. II. Tattoos are getting popular, but how should Christians approach them? A. Tattoos have a history in paganism. i. So what does the Bible say about tattoos? There is indeed one verse that specifically refers to them, and then there are several that could at least be interpreted to be referring to tattoos. ii. Within the Levitical law, there is a command to not tattoo yourselves. It falls within the context of cutting the body for the dead as well. It is so clear and black and white in this section. iii. Some will consider the matter closed, that tattoos are not of God and that we must not have them. I read the context of verse 28 so that we could see an important principle when dealing with the law in the Old Testament. iv. Notice that the verse before it tells us that we re not allowed to shave our beards or sideburns. There s more going on than this command to not have tattoos. And its reasoning is right there in the same verse. v. Paul and a few other New Testament writers have laid down a principle about the Mosaic law. We are freed from the law by Christ. We don t have to follow the cultural and ceremonial laws as Israel did. He even charges that if we want to follow one of them, we must follow all. So if you hold P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 6

to not getting tattoos on the basis of verse 28, you must allow your facial hair to grow without being trimmed or cut, and a host of other principles, like no more cheeseburgers and not wearing any clothing with two fabrics. vi. I want to set up an understanding of the law in the Old Testament that may help us tremendously. Many scholars see three parts to Mosaic Law: 1. Moral Law. These laws are like the Ten Commandments and are forever laws. They are expected just as much of a practicing Christian as Israel. When we follow Christ, we will fulfill these moral laws. These are often repeated at least in part by New Testament writers. 2. Ceremonial Law. These laws have specifically to do with the temple and ritualistic worship. They have the context of temple, priest and sacrificial laws. There is no more temple, and Jesus is our ultimate sacrifice. They are helpful to us to see how precisely Christ fulfilled our sacrifice in our place! But we don t practice them today. 3. Civic Law. There were also a host of laws about the land of Israel, the culture and society of Israel, that applied to Israel while in the land. These also don t need to be followed by Christians. These include things like circumcision. They had the aim of showing Israel how to be holy, different and separate from the pagan nations around them. vii. This law about tattooing, and the laws around it, fall under civic laws. Therefore, although it is in black and white in the law, it is in a context of laws that we are not required to follow as Christians. viii. This law about tattoos is coupled with cutting your body for the dead. This tattooing that is prohibited, then, was a ritual tattooing to identify with the dead. People would cut themselves to endure the pain of loss when someone died, or even cut themselves for their gods and tattoo themselves to identify with those gods. See 1 Kings 18:28 where the prophets of Baal cut themselves to get Baal s attention on Mount Carmel. ix. The New Testament does not speak to the issue of tattoos specifically as it does the Moral Laws. This leads us to do a little more research. Could tattoos be part of anywhere else in the Bible? And what does the context of those places tell us about God s concerns? B. Tattoos fall under the principle of honoring God with our bodies. i. What is interesting about tattoos, other than their context in Leviticus of ritualistic pagan worship settings, is that God might actually use the imagery of tattooing in Isaiah! P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 7

ii. In Isaiah 49:16, God tells unfaithful Israel that He has engraved their name on His hands, like a tramp stamp. He is faithful to them always, but they have been unfaithful to Him, and He is stuck with the forever name of Israel on His hands. iii. The people of God may have tattoos in certain passages, like Isaiah 44:5. And even more, the special 144,000 are sealed with God s seal on their right hands or foreheads in Revelation, and that seal may be some type of tattoo, as the mark of the beast might also be seen that way. iv. In Revelation 3:12, Jesus promises the overcomer, the saint, that He will write His name on that person. All of these may be allusions to tattooing of some sort. But we cannot be sure. v. Suffice it to say, tattooing is not a crystal clear issue throughout the whole of Scripture, so I offer you these biblical principles on tattooing which apply to our use and stewardship of the body God gave us. vi. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 tells us for the first time that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit and that if we destroy that temple, God will destroy us. Indeed, when people mistreat their bodies, they come into diseases and all sorts of ills! vii. 1 Corinthians 6 reaffirms that our bodies are God s temple, but in the ending of that same section, Paul reminds us that our bodies do not belong to us but to Jesus because He saved us by paying the price we have not in His body. viii. There are a couple of things to consider if you are interested in tattoos. The first is the biblical advice that while it may not be spoken against strongly in Scripture, and may be permissible, it is not necessarily beneficial (1 Cor 6:12). ix. Aside from this is the advice of Romans 14 that we would hold standards that do not endanger the spiritual life of others in our community. If it will cause others to stumble, we are called to caring for others salvation ahead of our own desires. x. Finally, Solomon reminds us with great wisdom in Ecclesiastes 7:8 that the ending of a thing is more important than the beginning. If you get that tattoo at the age of 20, will you be in the same place of enjoying it at 70? xi. Tattoos fall under matters of conscience. If you have a high standard, while you are welcome to share it with other believers, do not impose it upon them or judge them for their weaker or lower standards. Let us live in peace with one another! If Jesus can see past our sins and low standards, then we can see past one another s when it is not directly sin. P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 8

xii. If you feel that the Levitical law is a moral one and not a civic one, that is a position you may hold, but you must also follow the rest of these laws in the same section. Text Exodus 21:1-6 1 Now these are the rules that you shall set before them. 2 When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. 3 If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master s, and he shall go out alone. 5 But if the slave plainly says, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free, 6 then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever. III. Body Piercings and Jewelry have been around, but how should Christians address them? A. Body Piercings have a history in slavery in the Bible. i. While some may suppose that Leviticus 19:28 also deals with body piercings, it does not. The cutting of the body for the dead has nothing to do with the common practice of piercing ears for jewelry and adornment. ii. However, the piercing of ears is indeed mentioned in the Old Testament law under the issue of Hebrew slavery. The context is that of a Hebrew slave who does not wish to be freed from his master in the seventh year. iii. The law made a special circumstance for a slave that got married during his slavery and built a family. According to the law, the wife of the man and his children belong to his master. iv. In such a case, the man would leave in the seventh year without his family because he was no longer that master s slave. But this law allowed for the family to be together. v. It gave the man the right to stay on as a slave forever, skipping the freedom of the seventh year when all things are restored to each Israelite. It also allows the man to stay with his family. vi. The way to signify this was by piercing or boring the man s ear with an awl so that he would always be that master s slave, and always connected to his family after he started his slavery. vii. These are the only circumstances related to piercing in the Bible, other than piercing of Jesus for our sins and healing. And it is found in civic laws for Israel as well. This law specifically stipulates between a Hebrew master and a Hebrew slave. B. Body Piercings and jewelry are common, but can be used wickedly. P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 9

i. As for the rest of God s Word, ear piercings were expected to wear the jewelry that is mentioned from time to time in the Bible. Today s issue of piercing other parts of the body is not really addressed in Scripture. ii. Sometimes the jewelry that the people would have would be positive. For instance, Rebecca is given jewelry as part of her family s wealth and as a gift to be adorned for beauty. iii. But other times, the jewelry can be seen as negative, like when the people who were given jewelry by the Egyptians melted it down and made a golden calf to worship in the wilderness at Mount Sinai. iv. Throughout Scripture, jewelry can be used for good or for bad. The cutting of the body, however is dealt with in Leviticus 19:28. Those who cut themselves would do it to identify with the dead. v. Today, there is a group of people that are called cutters. They make cuts in their body to feel something because they say they are numb to this world. They are essentially saying that they are dead to the world, and cutting is a way of feeling something. It is a reverse identification with the dead. vi. In such a case, we need to minister to these people and show them God s grace and the power of God s gospel. They need to know that they are loved and that they can feel some wonderful things because of Christ and His sacrifice! vii. I would issue a word of caution to piercing the body. There is overkill, like piercing your ear 20 or 30 times. We must be careful to not be excessive. viii. One other word of caution: I don t believe we would uphold the principle of our bodies being God s temple if we put holes all through them. Conclusion When it comes to matters of personal holiness and conscience, we need to have the freedom to seek the Lord through His Spirit and His Word, and to get wise counsel from other believers whom we can trust, who have walked with God longer. We need to have the freedom to address one another as mature brothers and sisters in Christ, not as parents to infants. We don t want to be like the Pharisees but we want to build one another up, encourage one another, and keep one another accountable so that we might all finish this race and win the prize! Action Points What is the Spirit saying to you about tattoos and piercings/jewelry? Does He bring it to your attention or do others? Do you personally consider the evidence for tattoos in the Bible as strongly against or neutral? Search out the Scriptures and ask for wisdom on the matters that are under personal holiness and conscience. Work out your salvation with fear and trembling. P s & Q s Holiness Series Page 10
