1 Cheder Lubavitch Arizona Parent Handbook 5775 Dear Parents, Welcome to another great year at Cheder Lubavitch Arizona! This booklet will provide an outline of basic information about the policies and procedures of Cheder Lubavitch Arizona. Please read through the handbook to become familiar with its contents. We hope to encourage children to become responsible and motivated learners with an excitement for Yiddishkeit, Chassidishkeit, and for being a Jew. Cheder Lubavitch Arizona strives to inculcate our children with yiras shamayim, bitachon and emunah, which are the foundations for a Jewish person. We will also be placing much emphasis on ahavas yisroel and mashiach u'geulah. Our staff aims to maximize possibilities for successful learning by providing a rich and educationally sound environment, along with individualized student guidance and attention to the needs of each child. This unique combination will promote a love for learning, self-respect and positive self-esteem. We endeavor to do this all in a safe and orderly fashion. We are still a new school, and there is always room for advancement and improvement. As parents, you are a great asset to our growth, and we welcome your comments and suggestions. Please remember that we are all working together to make this a school we are proud of, and any suggestions or criticism should be presented in a constructive and respectful manner. 2 School Hours Arrival: Students are expected to be in school by 8:30 am. Children may start arriving at 8:25 am. Please do not bring your child to school before this time since there will be no supervision. Punctuality: We like to greet our students warmly and individually at the start of the day. Therefore it is important that your child comes on time so that he/she can start the day off correctly. Dismissal and Departure: School ends promptly at 3:30pm. Pickup will be from 3:30pm - 3:35pm. Students will be waiting in the hallway by the preschool exit to facilitate an easier pickup for the parents. The afternoon teacher will see to it that each child is safely delivered to his/her parent or carpool. We realize that there are unexpected situations that may cause delays in pickup, please be advised that late fees may apply if a parent consistently arrives after the 3:30-3:35 pickup time. Early Pick Up: Should your child have to leave early or in the middle of the day, the school should be notified either by calling, ing, or by sending a note to your child s teacher. This will enable the teacher to have your child ready. Attendance/Absence: It is to the advantage of the student to have a good attendance record. Attendance and lateness will be monitored and recorded. Any student who is absent is responsible to make up the missed work. As our classes are small, it is always helpful for a teacher to know if a student will not be in school (due to a simcha, etc.) Homework: Homework assignments are an integral part of the planned curriculum, and are necessary to make learning permanent. Due to the fact that we feature a dual program, parents should expect their children to have homework, in both Judaic and General Studies. A child should not spend "all night" studying. The following is the amount of time allotted to each grade for homework: First Grade: minutes

3 Second Grade: minutes 5-10 additional minutes can be added to each grade, not to exceed one hour. If you see your child spending more time than indicated, please write a note to the teacher. Health Illness and Medication: Please do not send your child to school, if he/she is showing any sign of illness. Any contagious or communicable illness must be reported to the school. Your child must remain at home when any of the following conditions are present: -Fever (A child should remain fever-free for a full 24 hours before returning to school.) -Respiratory: Breathing difficulties, wheezing or coughing, significant colds. -Vomiting -Diarrhea -Undiagnosed rash -Sore Throat/strep -Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) -Head Lice -Impetigo -Other Communicable Diseases After having had a communicable disease a child may return to school upon certification that he/she has been absent for the necessary isolation period: -Chicken Pox: 6 days, all lesions are dry and crusted -Streptococcal infection including sore throat and scarlet fever: no sooner than 24 hours after start of oral medication or an injection. -Head lice : all nits and lice are totally removed. -Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): at least 24 hours after the start of medication and no drainage present. -Teachers and staff members are not permitted to administer or dispense Tylenol or any other medication without parental permission. Illness or Injury in School: If a child becomes ill during the day, we will call you at the numbers we have on file. Thus, it is important that you keep us informed of any phone number changes. If you cannot be reached, we will call the emergency numbers on file for your child. In case of a minor injury, we will administer reasonable first aid as necessary.

4 Your child will be kept as safe and as comfortable as possible at school until you or your emergency person can pick him/her up. In case of severe illness, G-d forbid, when you or any emergency contact cannot be reached, we will consult with the emergency medical number you have on file. Food & Kashrus Allergy Allert: Please be aware that the Cheder campus is a peanut and nut free facility. Students may not bring any products containing nuts or peanuts. Lunch: We ask that parents provide their children with lunches and snacks that conform to the laws of Kashrus and good nutrition. Children should eat their own lunch. Please send food your child likes and will eat. The school does not allow sharing food or snacks. Birthday Parties: A Jewish birthday marks a special day. We encourage children to celebrate by sharing a Torah thought, giving tzedakah, making a hachlata, saying a bracha and sharing a special treat and/or activity with their class. For his/her birthday your child may bring in a snack, something to learn and share, a small denomination of coins for tzedakah,etc. Please note that since the Rebbe has given us guidelines about how to celebrate a birthday, it would be appropriate that the birthday farbrengen take place during Limudei Kodesh. When sending treats for a birthday, please bear in mind that they are still in school and expected to continue learning. No home baked goods may be distributed. The Chabad kitchen is available to use for baking if needed. All foods brought in must have the appropriate kosher symbols and be pareve/ cholov yisrael and pas yisroel when applicable. Please inform the class teacher several days in advance of the birthday so that he/she may plan accordingly.

5 Dress Code Uniform Policy: Appropriate dress plays an important role in the dignified atmosphere of the Cheder. All students are required to wear a uniform. They may wear Shabbos clothes on specific Chassidishe Yomim Tovim. Sweaters: Students can wear any solid navy, gray or black sweater or sweatshirt. No logos or words are allowed. If you would like to order a Cheder sweatshirt please contact Rachel Welner. Shoes: Oxfords, sneakers, closed-toe shoes, and open toe shoes with socks are acceptable. For safety reasons crocs and flip flops are not permitted. Boys: Pants: Navy or khaki trousers. No corduroy, cargo (many pockets), or wind pants. Shirts: Light Blue, white or maroon polo shirt Girls: The laws of tznius must be kept at all times. Shirts/Skirts: Light blue, white or maroon polo shirts Navy (pleated) skirt that must cover the knee when standing AND sitting Tights or knee socks must be worn at all times. Hair should be neatly combed. Longer hair must be pulled back. Parent and Teacher Communication Conferences: Parent-Teacher conferences are held twice a year. Please plan to attend the conferences. The conference dates are listed on the school calendar.

Student Expectations Chassidishe Standards: Yiras Shamayim and Chassidishkeit will be emphasized constantly. It is important for parents to hold these standards at home in order to ensure that these values are properly internalized. Cheder students are expected to be models of bnos chabad and talmidim of a chassidishe chinuch. This includes speech, dress and actions. Students should only be found in appropriate environments, use aidel language and have parental supervision over media outlets. Middos Tovos: Cheder puts a prime focus on middos. This includes: No Bullying Keeping hands to yourself. No name-calling. No laughing at another student. No leaving other students out (cliques.) This applies both inside the classroom and during recess.
