Glue here into Your Notebook Islamic Civilizations Vocabulary Foldable Directions: Cut out this foldable graphic organizer along the dotted lines and then fold and glue into your notebook. Underneath each term write a definition in your own words on one side and then draw a picture to represent the term on the other side of the flap. The Hijrah Qur an Hajj Mosque Caliph Sunni Shi a

Completed Vocabulary Sample Page Extension Activity: In addition to defining the terms in their own words and adding an image, I often have students use an open portion of their notebook page to write a short story using as many of the vocab terms as they can. We ll then share these in class (which are often amusing) and see how many they could get.

Directions: The revelations of Muhammad form the basis of the Islamic religion, a monotheistic faith. After learning about Muhammad and the beginning of Islam, complete the graphic organizer below. Take notes in your notebook underneath about each heading of Muhammad s life and its impact on the growth of Islam then draw symbols and imagery on the top of each flap. Note: Islam discourages the depiction of humans and animals, so try to represent each through patterns, shapes, words, and arabesque (the center shows Muhammad in Arabic).

Completed Origins of Islam Sample

Directions: Muhammad and his followers spread Islam. Complete this map of its spread by labeling important cities and regions as well as adding arrows & dates to show when and where Islam spread. Finally, complete the box at the bottom on its impact.

Completed Growth of Islam Sample

Directions: The main teaching of Islam is that there is only one God, Allah. All believers must carry out five duties known as the Five Pillars of Islam. After learning about each of the pillars, cut out the graphic organizer below and write each pillar and draw a picture to represent it on the top of the flap. Then, explain that Pillar of Islam on your notebook paper underneath.

Completed Beliefs of Islam Sample

Directions: After Muhammad's death, the Muslim community elected a new leader, known as a caliph, meaning successor. The first four Caliphs are known as the Rashidun Caliphate, meaning "rightly guided." After learning about the first caliphs and subsequent dynasties, complete the timeline below with their names, and years of rule, then take notes on the significant events of their caliphate on your notebook underneath.

Completed Caliphs of Islam Samples

Directions: A major split of Muslims occurred after the death of Muhammad. This split led to two branches of Islam: Sunnis and Shiites. After learning about the split, cut along the dotted lines and place glue only behind the title so that the 3 parts can be folded up and down. Under the title, explain what caused the Sunni-Shi a split in Islam. Then, under each flap, write characteristics that apply to that sect and then some that apply to both.

Completed Sunni-Shi a Samples

Fold and glue Fold and glue Literature Philosophy Directions: The Abbasid Caliphate is often known as the Golden Age of Islam. During this period, scientific knowledge and art spread and was encouraged. After learning about these developments, take notes on the categories below. Cut each one out then glue the folder into your notebook so that each scroll fits inside. Finally, explain the overall impact of Islamic culture on the World in your notebook. Science Medicine Islamic Achievements in its Golden Age Fold and glue Mathematics Art Calligraphy

Completed Golden Age Achievements Sample

Directions: The Seljuk Turks rose to become a powerful empire based in Anatolia. After learning about the rise of the Turks, cut out the graphic organizer below and take notes on each category under the flaps. Then draw a map of their empire in the center and identify key locations. Glue Here Onto 0000 Your Notebook Students of History -
