1 The Etiquettes of Jumu ah (حفظھ الله ( al- Anazi By Shaykh Badr ibn Muhammad al-badr (حفظھ الله ( Abdullah Translated by Abu Afnaan Muhammad All praise is due to Allah the Lord of All Worlds and prayers and peace be upon the seal of the Prophets and Messengers and his entire family. To begin: These are several of the etiquettes which the Muslim should adorn himself with on Jumu'ah. 1. Major ritual purification (Ghusl) It is a very strongly recommended Sunnah as per the correct opinion due to the hadeeth of Samarah in the Sunan and it has supporting evidences. It is also said that it is obligatory as to the apparent meaning of the ahaadeeth which contain the command to make ghusl. Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah stated: The ghusl is obligatory upon the one who has a foul odour, and it is recommended for the one who does not have an odour due to the hadeeth of Ibn Abbaas found in Abi Daawood. It has been narrated regarding the virtues of the ghusl of Jumu ah from Abi Qataadah from the Prophet الله علیھ و سلم) :(صلى Whoever makes ghusl on Jumu ah will remain pure until the next Jum 'ah. [Narrated by at-tabaraanee in al-awsat, by Ibn Khuzaymah in his Saheeh and declared saheeh by Ibn Hibbaan, al-haakim and declared hasan by al-albaanee in at-targheeb wa at-tarheeb] info@mpubs.org Page 1

2 The time of the ghusl (for Jumu ah) is when one wants (prepares) to leave to Jumu ah prayer. Whoever makes ghusl for Jumu ah then nullifies his wudhoo, it is sufficient for him to simply make wudhoo and not repeat the ghusl. This was reported by Maalik and others. 2. Wearing the best clothing It was narrated by al-bukhaaree from Umar that he saw an expensive garment at the masjid and said: O Messenger of Allah, (what) if I bought this for (you) for Jumu'ah and for delegations. Also, Ibn Khuzaymah narrated in his Saheeh: The Chapter of it Being Recommended for the Individual to Have Clothes for Jumu ah Other Than Those for Work. He narrated with his chain of narration from Aa`ishah that the Prophet said: There is no blame upon anyone of you if he found the means, to buy two thawbs (garments) for his Jumu ah other than his two garments for work. 3. Trimming the moustache and cutting the nails Imaam Ahmad stated that it was recommended to trim the moustache and clip the nails on Friday because it adds to cleanliness and Ibn Umar used to do it every Jumu ah. This was narrated by Ibn Wahb in his Muwwatta with a sound chain of narration. 4. As-Siwaak It is recommended to use the siwaak on Friday to remove any bad odour. info@mpubs.org Page 2

3 There is a hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim which proves this. صلى الله ( He Using the siwaak should be with the right hand due to the hadeeth of Aa`ishah: shoes, used to like using the right hand in making purification, putting on (علیھ و سلم combing the hair, using the siwaak and all his affairs. [Related by Abu Daawood and considered authentic by al-albaanee. Shaykh al-luhaydaan said to me that the siwaak is used with the right hand. Whoever does so with his left, there is no harm in doing so. I saw al- Allaamah al-fawzaan use the siwaak with his left. Ibn al- Uthaymeen stated: And he can clean his teeth with a toothbrush on Jumu ah as it entails additional cleanliness. 5. Using fragrant scents It is recommended that whoever attends Jumu ah adorns himself with a fragrant scent due to what has come in Saheeh Muslim: and that he touches (uses) scents. And in another narration: even if it s from his wife's fragrances. And it is better that the scent is Oud or burned scents and that he avoids colognes which contain alcohol due to the well-known difference of opinion concerning them. 4 Al-Bukhaaree mention in his Saheeh: The Chapter of The Fragrant Scent is for the Head and the Beard. Then he mentioned his chain of narration from the hadeeth of Aa`ishah: I used to see the glistening/shining from the scent he was wearing in the middle of his head where his hair parted and in his beard. (صلى الله علیھ و سلم) It also comes in some maraasil narrations of Abi Daawood: The Prophet used to apply fragrant scents to his head and beard. This narration, even though it is mursal, is (supporting) evidence of the narration of Aa`ishah. 6. Attending the prayer early It is recommended for whoever attends Jumu ah to come early due to the hadeeth: Whoever leaves for Jumu ah at the first hour, it is as if he sacrificed a camel... - the hadeeth. Also, the hadeeth of whoever hastens to come early and be of the first. 7. Getting close to the Imaam It is recommended to get close to the imaam so as to hear the khutbah well. And there is a related hadeeth related by Ibn Maajah. 8. Going to Jumu ah by walking And there is a related hadeeth in Ibn Maajah. The People of Knowledge recommend that the individual goes to Jumu ah by walking unless info@mpubs.org Page 4

5 the masjid is far, then he can ride so as to not miss Jumu ah. 9. Prayer and dhikr It is recommended for the one who enters the masjid to busy himself with prayer, glorifying Allah, reading the Qur aan and supplication, seeking the time of Jumu ah when the supplication is answered. Also, it is recommended to not speak about the affairs of the dunyaa. It is recommended to read Soorah al-kahf. There is a hadeeth regarding this of which there is a difference of opinion concerning its authenticity. The correct position is that it is authentic and several of the Huffaadh have deemed it as being authentic and from them, Shaykh al-albaanee..(صلى الله علیھ و سلم) It is also recommended to increase sending prayers upon the Prophet And the hadeeth regarding this are numerous and well known. Also, dhikr after Jumu ah is recommended. {And if the prayer is finished, then spread out throughout the earth and seek the bounties of Allah and remember Allah frequently} 10. If he enters the masjid, he is to sit at the nearest opening and not step over the necks of others He is to not sit with his legs up towards his chest holding them up with his arms wrapped info@mpubs.org Page 5

6 around them (muhtabi) and is not to interlock his fingers until the prayer is finished (then he can do so). He is not to play with anything which busies him from his prayer nor is he to supplicate for the one who sneezes nor is he to respond to the greetings of salaam during the khutbah as all of the above are considered lugh or idle speech which is prohibited on Jumu ah. It is narrated in the hadeeth that: Whoever engages in laghu (idle talk), there is no Jumu ah for him. Though there is a weakness in this narration, the Imaams have adopted the abovementioned position. info@mpubs.org Page 6
