Definition of Bid ah Allah SWT says: Or have they partners with Allaah (false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allaah has not ordained? [Qur an 42:21] The Prophet PBUH said: "Whoever among you lives after I am gone will see great disputes; you must adhere to my Sunnah and the way of the Rightly Guided Khulafa. Hold on to it and cling fast to it. And beware of newlyinvented matters, for every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a deviation" [Abu Dawud 4607, Sahih by Albani] On the basis of above ayah and hadith, the Scholars define Bid ah as Worshipping Allah in ways that Allah has not ordained or Worshipping Allah in ways that are not those of the Prophet PBUH or his Rightly Guided Caliphs Ibn Hajar said: And what is intended by his saying "Every innovation is misguidance" is whatever is newlyintroduced and has no evidence in the Shariah in neither a general way nor a specific way [Fath al-bari (13/253)] Ibn Rajab said: If anyone introduces something new and describes it as part of religion, when it has no basis at all in religion, then it is misguidance and it has nothing to do with religion [Jaami Uloom wa al Hikam (2/128)] To Summarize in three Points, the definition of Bid ah is: 1. Every belief or saying or action, which was invented after the demise of the Prophet PBUH and described as part of the religion 2. This newly invented matter is practiced with the intention of worshiping Allah and getting closer to Him 3. This newly introduced matter has no basis neither in Qur'an and Sunnah nor in the action of Companions. Bid ah may be divided into two categories: 1. Bid ah which constitutes kufr Categories of Bid ah Denying or affirming some notions about Allah, His Prophet and Qur an when they are far above from that. It also includes denying something obligatory or making something obligatory that is not obligatory, or making Haraam into Halaal and Halaal into Haraam. 2. Bid ah which does not constitute kufr It is less severe than the first one because it does not imply rejection of Qur an and Sunnah, and the doer of this Bida h will remain Muslim but he is Sinning and will suffer major consequences if not repented. Imam Barbahaari (d.329h) said: Beware of small innovations, because they grow and become large. This was the case with every innovation introduced into this Ummah. It started as something small, bearing a resemblance to the truth, which is why those who entered into it were misled, and then were unable to leave it. So it grew and it became the religion which, they followed, so they deviated from the Straight Path and thus left Islaam" [Sharah As Sunnah No. 7 (Arabic No.5), Tabqaat Hanabilya (1/179) and quoted by Albani in Hujjat Nabi (1/103) and Manasik Hajj wa Umrah (1/43)] Page 2 of 9

Every Bid'ah is Misguidance The Prophet PBUH said: "The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly-invented; every newly invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the fire" [Sunan Nasai 1579 and Ibn Majah 45, Sahih by Zubair Ali and Albani] The Prophet PBUH said: " And beware of newly-invented matters, for every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a deviation" [Abu Dawud 4607, Sahih by Albani] The Prophet PBUH said: If somebody innovates something which is not present in our religion, then that thing will be rejected" [Bukhari 2697 and Muslim 4492] Mu'adh bin Jabal RA said: "Ahead of you there are trials in which there will be a great deal of wealth, and the Qur'an will be so easy that believers and hypocrites, men and women, young and old, slave and free will all learn it. Then soon a man will say: 'Why don't the people follow me when I have read the Qur'an. They will not follow me until I innovate something else for them.' So beware of that which is innovated, for that which is innovated is misguidance" [Abu Dawud 4611, Sahih by Zubair Ali] The Prophet PBUH said: "There is not a deed that will take one to paradise except what I commanded you to do and no deed will take to hell except what I have forbidden you to do" [Mustadrak al Hakim 2136, Sahih Targheeb 1700 and Silsilah Sahiha 2866] The Prophet PBUH said: There is nothing by means of which one may draw close to Paradise and move far away from Hell but it has been explained to you" [As Sahiha 1803] Statements of Companions and Imams on Discarding Bid ah Abdullah ibn Masud RA said: "Follow (the Sunnah) and do not innovate, for you have been given that which is sufficient and every innovation is misguidance" [Tabrani Majma Kabeer 8770, declared Sahih by Albani in Kitab ul Ilm (No. 54) by Abu Khaythamah and authenticated by Al Haythami in Majma Zawaid 853, Haythami said narrators are trustworthy] Ibn Masud RA said: "Verily today you have become upon the Fitrah, and verily you will innovate and innovation will be made for you, so then if you see an innovation, then adhere to the first era (i.e. the companions)." [Jami Uloom wal Hikam (28/29) and authenticated by Ibn Hajar Asqalani in Fath al Bari 13/253] Abdullah ibn Mas ud said: Moderation upon the Sunnah is better than exertion in innovation [Darimi 217, Strong Isnaad by Hussain Saleem Asad and Mustadrak al Hakim 352, authenticated by Ad Dhahabi in Talkhees] Hudhayfah ibn Yaman RA said: "Every act of worship which the Companions did not do, do not do it." [Al Itisaam by Al Shatibi 1/418 also Amr bil Ittiba wa nahi Al Ittiba by Suyuti (1/3) and authenticated by Albani in Hujjat Nabi (1/100) and Manasik Hajj (1/44)] Abdullah ibn Umar RA said: "Every Innovation is Misguidance, even if the people consider it to be something good." [Itiqaad Ahle Sunnah wal Jamah by Lalikai No. 126, related by al-bayhaqee in al-madkhal ilas-sunan (no. 139), and classed as Sahih by Albani in Talkhees Ahkaam Janaiz (1/83)] Page 3 of 9

Imaam Sufyaan Ath-Thawree said: "Innovation is more beloved to Iblees (Shaitaan) than sin, since a person makes repentance from sin but does not repent from innovations (because he thinks bid'ah is from the religion)". [Itiqad Ahle Sunnah wal Jamah by Laalikai No. 238 also quoted by Ibn Taymiah in Majmu Fatawa (10/9)] Imam Abu Hanifa said: "Cling firmly to the narrations and the way of the Salaf and beware of the newly invented affairs, for all of that is innovation" [Sawnul Mantaq wal kalam P.32 of Imam Suyuti.] Imam Malik said: "Whosoever introduces into Islam an innovation, which he deems is good, then he has claimed that Muhammad PBUH has betrayed (the trust of conveying) the Message, Allah SWT says: "This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islâm as your religion" [Qur'an 5:3] So whatever was not (part of) the Religion on that day, is not (part of) the Religion on this day" [Shatibi in AI-l'tisaam (1/29)] Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: "The foundations of the Sunnah with us are: Clinging firmly to what the Companions of Messenger of Allah PBUH were upon, taking them as examples to be followed, abandoning innovations, since all innovations are misguidance". [Itiqad Ahle Sunnah wal Jamah by Laalikai 1/156] Imam ash-shaafi reported a consensus among the scholars of the Sahaba, the Taba in and their followers that: "If a Sunnah of Allah's Messenger PBUH, becomes manifest to a person, he does not have any choice but to follow it, regardless of what other people say." [Ar-Risaalah Tabookiyyah of Ibn ul Qayyim (2/361) & Fulaani (p. 68)] Severe Warning for Followers of Bid ah The Prophet PBUH said: Whosoever honors an innovator he helped in pulling down Islam [Ash Shariyah of Ajurri 2040, Sahih by Zubair Ali] The Prophet PBUH said: "Some of my companions will come to me at Al-Haud (Al-Kauthar)] and after I recognize them, they will then be taken away from me, where upon I will say, 'My companions!' Then it will be said, 'You do not know what they innovated (new things) in the religion after you" [Sahih Bukhari 6582]. In another narration the Prophet PBUH said: I will say: Far removed, far removed (from mercy), those who changed (their religion) after me" [Bukhari 6584] The Prophet PBUH said: " Allah curses anyone who gives shelter to an innovator " [Muslim 5124] The Prophet PBUH said: "If anyone introduces an innovation, he will be responsible for it. If anyone introduces an innovation or gives shelter to a man who introduces an innovation (in religion), he is cursed by Allah, by His angels, and by all the people" [Abu Dawud 4530, Sahih by Albani] The Prophet PBUH said: "Allah makes repentance inaccessible to every innovator till he gives up Bidah" [Tabrani Majma Awsat 4202, Sahih Targheeb 54 and As Sahiha 1620 also Majma Zawaid 17457]. Narrated Abu Qilaba: "Never does a man introduce an innovation, except that he makes lawful the usage of the sword" [Darimi 99, Sahih Isnad by Hussain Saleem Asad] Page 4 of 9

The worst Effect of Bid ah (Innovation) The worst effect of bid'ah is that it corrupts and replaces the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah PBUH. Hassaan Ibn Atiyyah said: No people introduce an innovation into their religion, except that Allah takes away its like from their Sunnah and then does not restore it to them until the Day of Resurrection" [Mishkat ul Masabih 188, Sahih by Albani also Darimi 98, Sahih Isnaad by Hussain Saleem Asad] Abdullah ibn Mas'ood RA lamented: "How will it be when the trials overcome you, in which the old grow senile and the young grow up. And the people take the bid'ah as the Sunnah, and when it changes they say the Sunnah has changed" It was then said, "When will that be O Abu Abdur rahmaan?" He replied: "When your speakers are many and your scholars are few, and your wealthy ones are plenty and trustworthy ones are few" [Darimi 185, Sahih Isnaad by Hussain Saleem Asad] On the authority of Hudhaifah bin al-yamaan RA: He once took two stones and placed one on top of the other and asked his companions: Do you see any light (passing) between these two stones? They said: O Abu Abdullaah! We do not see any light (passing) between these two stones except for very little. He said: By the One (Allah) in whose Hand is my soul! Verily, Bid`ah (religious innovation) will (soon) appear till nothing of the truth is seen except for the amount of light which you see (passing) between these two stones. By Allah! Bid`ah will circulate (so much) so that if something of it is left out, the people will say: The Sunnah had been abandoned. [Al Bid`a Ibn Wadhdhah 151 and Al Itisaam Ash Shatibi (1/86)] Acts of Bid ah must be Condemned Very Strongly The Prophet PBUH said: "There is no Prophet whom Allah sent to any nation before me, but he had disciples and Companions among his nation who followed his path and obeyed his commands. Then after them came generations who said what they did not do, and did what they were not commanded to do. Whoever strives against them with his hand is a believer; whoever strives against them with his tongue is a believer; whoever strives against them with his heart is a believer. Beyond that there is not even a mustard-seed's worth of faith" [Muslim 179] The Prophet PBUH said: Islam began as something strange and will revert to being something strange, so glad tidings to the strangers. It was said: Who are they, O Messenger of Allaah? He said: Those who correct what the people have corrupted [As Sahiha 1273] Amr Ibn Salamah narrated: We used to sit at the door of Abdullah Ibn Mas ud before the morning Prayer, so that when he would come out we would walk with him to the mosque. One day Abu Musa al-ash ari came to us and said: Has Abu Abdur-Rahmaan (i.e. Ibn Mas ud) come out yet? We replied: No! So he sat down with us until he came out. When he came out we all stood along with him, so Abu Musa said to him: O Abu Abdur-Rahman! I have just seen something in the mosque which I deemed to be evil, but - and all praise is for Allah - I did not see anything except good. Ibn Mas ud inquired, What did you see? Abu Musa replied: If you live, you too will see it. In the mosque I saw people sitting in circles awaiting the Prayer. In each circle they had pebbles in their hands and a man would say: repeat Allaahu Akbar (Allaah is greater) a hundred times. So they would repeat it a hundred times. Then he would say: repeat Laa ilaaha illallaah (There is none worthy of worship besides Allah) a hundred times. So they would repeat it a hundred times. Then he would say: repeat Subhaanallaah (How free is Allah from all imperfection) a hundred times. So they would say it a hundred times. Ibn Mas ud then asked, What did you say to them? Abu Musa said, I did not say anything to them. Instead I waited to hear your view, or what you declared. Then we went along with him, until he came to one of these circles and stood up and said: What is this I see you doing? They replied, O Abu Abdur-Rahman! These are pebbles upon which we are Page 5 of 9

counting takbeer, tahleel and tasbeeh. He said to them, Rather, count up your evil deeds. For I assure you that none of your good deeds will be lost. Woe be to you O Ummah of Muhammad PBUH! How quickly you head into destruction! These are the Companions of your Prophet PBUH and who are widespread. There are his clothes which have not yet decayed, and his bowl which is unbroken. By Him in whose Hand is my soul! Either you are upon a religion better guided than the Religion of Muhammad PBUH, or you are opening the doors of misguidance They said, O Abu Abdur-Rahmaan! By Allah! We only intend good. He said to them, How many there are who intend good, but do not achieve it. Indeed Allah s Messenger PBUH said to us, A people will recite the Qur aan, but it will not pass beyond their throats. By Allah I do not know, but perhaps most of them are from you Then he left. Amr Ibn Salamah said, We saw most of those people fighting against us on the day of Nahrawaan, alongside the Khawaarij. [Sunan Darimi, Hadith 204, Sahih Isnaad by Hussain Saleem Asad and Sahih by Albani in Silsilah Sahiha 2005] Amr ibn Zurarah reported that Abdullah ibn Masud RA stood by him when he was relating a story. He said: "O Amr! You have innovated a misleading bidah, or you are more guided than Muhammad PBUH and his Companions". Suddenly, Amr saw the people disperse from him till there was no one there. [Tabarani Majma Kabeer 8637 and Sahih Targheeb wa Tarheeb 60] Al-Ma`roor ibn Suwaid said: We went out with `Umar ibn Al-Khattaab RA and we came upon a place and the people rushed to pray there. `Umar said: What is the matter with them? They said: The Messenger of Allaah PBUH prayed here. `Umar said: Verily, those who came before you were destroyed because they followed such (practices) until they made them into places of worship. Whoever happens to be there at the time of prayer, let him pray there, and whoever is not there at the time of prayer, he should not pray there but continue his journey [Ibn Taymiya in Majmoo`-ul-Fataawaa, (1/281), Ibn Hajar in Fath Al Bari (1/569) and by Albani in Tahzeer Sajid (1/82)] Imaam Sa'eed ibn Al-Musayyib once saw a man praying more than two rak ah after the beginning of Fajr, making many bows and prostrations, and so he forbade him. The man said, O Abu Muhammad, is Allāh going to punish me for praying? Sa īd said: No, but He will punish you for contradicting the Sunnah [Sunan Kubra Al Bayhaqi 4234, Sahih Isnaad by Albani in Irwa Ghalil 2/236] A similar report was narrated from Imam Maalik. A man came to him and said: O Abu Abd-Allaah, from where should I enter ihraam? He said, From Dhu l-hulayfah, from where the Messenger of Allaah PBUH entered ihraam. He said, I want to enter ihraam from the Mosque, from near the grave (meaning the grave of the Prophet PBUH. He said, Do not do that, for I fear fitnah (trial, affliction) for you. He said, What fitnah is that? It is just a few miles I am adding. He said, What fitnah is greater than your thinking that you have found something good that the Messenger of Allaah PBUH failed to do?! I heard that Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And let those who oppose the Messenger s (Muhammad s) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them" [al-noor 24:63]. [Quoted by Shaikh Albani in Hujjat Nabi in the foot notes of No.22] Imam Al-Awzaa'ee said: "When Innovations emerge and the People of Knowledge do not show rejection against them, they become the Sunnah". [No. 18 (1/22) Sharaf Ashaabul-Hadeeth of al-khateeb al-baghdadi] Ibn Taymiah said: It was said to Ahmad Ibn Hanbal: Is a person who fasts, prays and make itikaf more beloved to you or speaking against the people of Bida?. He answered: If he fasts, prays and makes Itikaf then that is for himself, and if he speaks against the people of Bida then that is for the Muslims and that is better [Majmu Fatawa 28/ ] Page 6 of 9

Bid ah Hasanah A False Notion There can be no such thing like as bid ah hasanah ( good innovation ) because our Prophet PBUH said: Every bid ah is a going astray and every going astray is in Hell-fire. So, if anyone says that there is such a thing as bid ah hasanah, he is going against Prophet PBUH The People of Bid ah quote two evidences for proving that Bid ah Hasna (Good Innovation) is valid and can be invented, we will analyze both evidence one by one. 1. They quote a hadith in which Prophet PBUH said If anyone Starts a Good Practice The Prophet PBUH said: "Whoever starts a good tradition (Practice) which is followed, then for him is a reward, and the likes of the rewards of whoever follows him, there being nothing diminished from their rewards. And whoever starts a bad tradition which is followed, then for him is the sin, and the likes of the sins of whoever follows him, there being nothing diminished from their sins" [Tirmidhi 2675, Sahih by Zubair Ali] Clarification: People of Bid ah misquote above hadith and changed its meaning as per their own desire, but actually this hadith is speaking about taking initiative of those deeds that are in Sunnah. It doesn t speak about Bid ah. Let s read the full story behind this hadith It was narrated that Jarir bin 'Abdullâh said: "Some Bedouins came to the Messenger of Allah wearing woolen gannents, and He PBUH saw their bad condition and that they were in need, so He PBUH urged the people to give in charity, but they were so slow that (his disapproval) could be seen in his face. "Then an Ansari man brought a purse of silver, then another came, then they came one after another, until signs of happiness could be seen in his face. The Prophet PBUH said: Whoever starts a good practice in Islam that is followed after he is gone, there will be written for him a reward like that of those who do it, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest. Whoever starts a bad practice in Islam that is followed after he is gone, there will be written for him a burden of sin like that of those who do it, without that detracting from their burden in the slightest." [Muslim 6800] As seen from the above full story, the good practice referred here was related to taking the first initiative in giving Charity, which is an established Sunnah and mentioned in Qur'aan and Ahadith. This hadith in itself is against Bid ah and cannot be used as evidence for promoting Bid ah. The Prophet PBUH did not say, 'Whosoever innovates a Bidah, rather he said, 'Whosoever initiates a good Sunnah' and Sunnah is the opposite of Bidah. A smilar hadeeth will further explain this hadith. The Prophet PBUH said: "Whoever calls others to guidance will have a reward like that of those who follow it, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest. And whoever calls others to misguidance will have a burden of sin like that of those who follow it, without it detracting from their burden in the slightest." [Muslim 6804] Therefore, the sentence Whoever starts a good practice in Islam means which is according to Guidance and Sunnah of our Prophet PBUH not as per the logic and Bid ah of later generations. So this claim of People of Bid ah is rejected and cannot be used as evidence. Page 7 of 9

2. They quote a hadith of Umar RA for Inventing a Congregational Prayer of Taraweeh in Ramadan Narrated Ibn Shihab: Abdur Rabman bin 'Abdul Qari said, "I went out in the company of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab one night in Ramadan to the mosque and found the people performing Salat (prayers) in different groups. A man performing Salat (prayers) alone, or a man performing Salat (prayers) with a little group behind him. So, 'Umar said, 'In my opinion I would better collect these (people) under the leadership of one Qari (reciter) [i.e., let them perform Salat (prayers) in congregation!]'. So, he made up his mind and he congregated them behind Ubal bin Ka'b. Then on another night I went again in his company and the people were performing Salat (prayers) behind their reciter. On that, 'Umar remarked, 'What an excellent Bid'a this is; but the Salãt (prayers) which they do not perform, and sleep at its time is superior than the one they are performing now.' He meant the Salat (prayers) in the last part of the night. (In those days) people used to perform Salat (prayers) in the early part of the night." [Bukhari 2010] Clarification: Before clarifying this hadith of Umar RA, let us first know the meaning of word Bid ah. The word Bid ah when used in religious sense as we seen in the definition of Bid ah above will be condemned, but the same word Bid ah can also be used in linguistic (Lughat) sense for example Allah SWT says: "The ب د يع ال سم او ات و الا ر ض 2:117] Originator of the heavens and the earth." [Qur'an Ibn katheer said: And bidah is of two types. Sometimes it is a bidah shar'iyyah (with its Shariah meaning), such as his saying, "For every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is misguidance..." and sometimes it is a bidah lughawiyyah (with its linguistic meaning), such as the saying of Amir al-mu'minin Umar bin al-khattaab regarding his uniting them together for the Tarawih prayer and making them maintain this practice, "What an excellent innovation this is..." [Tafsir Ibn Katheer, Qur an 2:117] إ ن الا س لا م ب د أ غ ر يب ا 373] Another example is "Islam began as something strange" [Muslim In above ayah and hadith, we seen the usage of the word Bid ah in linguistic sense and it does not refer as Bid ah of Religion. Similarly, the saying of Umar RA What an excellent Bid'a this is is meant in linguistic sense not in religious sense because Umar RA did not invent anything new in religion, he just revived the forgotten Sunnah of Prophet PBUH which is praying Taraweeh in congregation with one Imam, and there are lots of evidence for this, some mentioned below. 1. The Prophet PBUH himself led the Taraweeh Congregation of Companions for 3 Nights but He PBUH abandoned it fearing that this Ummah will take it as an Obligation. Narrated Zaid bin Thabit: The Prophet PBUH took a room made of date-palm leaves mats in the mosque : Allah's Messenger offered prayers in it for a few nights till the people gathered [to offer the night prayer (Tarawih) (behind him)]. Then on (the 4th) night the people did not hear his voice and they thought he had slept, so some of them started humming in order that he might come out. The Prophet PBUH then said, "You continued doing what I saw you doing till I was afraid that this (Tarawih prayer) might be enjoined on you (made obligatory on you), and if it were enjoined on you, you would not continue performing it Therefore, O people! Perform your Salãt (prayers) at your homes, for the best prayer of a person is what is performed at his home except the compulsory (congregational) prayer" [Bukhari 7290 and 6113] Page 8 of 9

Jabir RA narrates The Prophet PBUH led them in prayer during Ramadan. He PBUH performed eight rakats followed by witr. [Ibn Hibban 2401 & 2406 Hasan Lighairih by Albani, Ibn Khuzaymah 1070, Hasan Isnaad by Aazmi] We can see in above ahadith that our Prophet PBUH himself led Companions in Taraweeh Congregation, Umar RA was not the first one to introduce this, he just followed the Prophet PBUH and revived his Sunnah. 2. The Prophet PBUH gave permission to Companions to lead Taraweeh in Congregation Narrated Jabir RA that Ubayy Ibn Ka ab RA came to the Messenger of Allah PBUH and said, I did something yesterday night the Messenger of Allah said, What did you do? he said, Some women came to my house and said they did not know much Qur aan so we shall pray behind you and will listen to the Qur aan. So I led them in 8 raka hs of prayer and offered the Witr prayer. The Messenger of Allaah PBUH remained silent (and thus it became the Sunnah) [Majma Zawaid 2387, Haythami said Isnaad Hasan]. Note: In this hadith the Prophet PBUH gave his approval to Companions to lead others in Taraweeh Congregation. 3. Umar RA shifted the time of Taraweeh from Last Part of Night to just after Isha Prayer, this is also proven in Sunnah. Umar RA ordered that people should pray Tarawih behind an Imam after Isha Prayer, so that weak and labor class who cannot wake up in the last part of night can pray along with Isha and get the reward of Qiyam ul Lail (Taraweeh). This action of Umar RA was probably based on this hadith of Prophet PBUH, which says that if staying in night is difficult for people they can pray after Isha and it will be counted as if they prayed in the last part of night. The Prophet PBUH said: "Indeed this staying awake at night is exhausting and difficult, so after any one of you prays witr, let him pray two rak ahs. If he wakes up, this is fine, otherwise these two rak ahs will be counted for him (As Tahajjud)" [Sunan Darim 1635, Husain Saleem Asad said Isnaad Sahih and Mishkat al Masabih 1286, Sahih by Albani] But even after making this time change, Umar RA still considered the Prayer in the last part of night is more virtuous in reward, He said in the same hadith: "But the Salat (prayers) which they do not perform, and sleep at its time is superior than the one they are performing now" [Bukhari 2010] Therefore, all the changes Umar RA made with regard to Taraweeh prayer was actually as per the sayings and actions of our Prophet PBUH, he just revived those sayings and actions, which can never be called as Bid ah. May Allah SWT guide us towards Straight path, the path of Noble Companions. Ameen Page 9 of 9
