2 Make copies of the worksheet.(see attachments) Preparation (approximately 10 minutes) Stage Procedure (approximately 45 minutes) 1 Teacher initiates a class discussion about Ramadan. Ask students questions. If students are hesitant to speak, let them write their answer down first and then discuss. 2 Teacher hands out the text. Difficult words written on the whiteboard can be used for a review game later. Students read text and scan for any difficult words. Circle these words and then write them on the whiteboard. 3 Teacher read the text to the students. Students listen and fill in the blanks. 4 Teacher monitors students while they answer the questions. If time allows, ask students to translate or define the underlined words and use each of them in a sentence. Students work individually to answer questions Students translate the underlined words into Bhs. Indonesia and use each word in a sentence. 5 Play Fly Swat vocabulary game with the words written up on the whiteboard if time allows. To play the Fly Swat games 2 students come up to the board. The teacher defines a word and the first student to swat the correct word gets the point.

3 Stage Procedure (approximately 45 minutes) Variations and Special notes: This activity was used during the fasting month of Ramadan when class time was shortened and students seemed to have low energy. You can give a more difficult version of the text (see attachment) to more advanced students. You can also use this for other holidays (see Thanksgiving Text, also attached.) Previous Knowledge Needed: Introduction to report text (generic structure) This lesson plan was originally publish in No What, What, a collection of lesson plans and classroom activities developed by Peace Corps volunteers and their Indonesian counterparts.

4 Attachment 1 for Ramadan Report RAMADAN Conversation 1. Do you celebrate Ramadan? What is your favorite thing about the fasting month? 2. What is usually your activity for Eid ul-fitr? Ramadan is the ninth (9th) lunar 1 in the Islamic calendar. Muslims all over the world fast during this month from the sunrise to 2. During fasting, Muslims go without eating, 3 and sexual activity as commanded by God in the Quran. Fasting is an important part of Ramadan. Muslims all around the world will not eat food or drink from morning until sunset. At sunset, the family will gather the fast-breaking meal known as Iftar. The meal starts with the eating of a date -just as Prophet Muhammad used to do. Then it's time for the Maghrib prayer, which is the fourth of the 4 daily prayers. If a person is 5 and not sick, then they should start participating in fasting at the age of puberty. People who are old or sick are not required to fast. Also not required to fast are: 6 women, women who are menstruating, and women breast-feeding their baby. Lastly, those 7 (musaafir) are exempt, but must 8 the missed days later. In addition to fasting, Muslims are encouraged to read the Qur'an. Some Muslims read the entire Qur'an by means of special prayers, called Tarawih, which are held in the mosques every night of the month, during which a whole section of the Qur'an is recited. Ramadan is also a time when Muslims are to focus on purity. During this month people should honor God through prayer, charity, kindness and helping others. Since it is a festival of giving and sharing, Muslims prepare special foods and buy gifts for their family and friends; this can involve buying new clothes, shoes, etc. Charity is very important in Islam. When walking down the streets of Cairo in Egypt at the time of the sunset prayer (Maghrib), people can be seen giving out dates and water to the poor. In Egypt, free public places for people to eat are set up during the holy month. They are organized by the wealthy, to give poor people some food during iftar time. The holiday of Eid ul-fitr marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan, after another new moon has been sighted. Eid ul-fitr means the Festival of Breaking the Fast. Food is donated to the poor (Zakat alfitr); everyone wears new clothes; and communal prayers are held in the early morning, followed by eating together and visiting relatives and friends. 5 Attachment 2 for Ramadan Report ramadan Ramadan is the ninth (9th) lunar month in the Islamic calendar. The word Ramadan comes from an Arabic root, as in ramida or arramad - meaning intense heat and shortness of rations. Muslims all over the world fast during this month from the sunrise to sunset. During fasting, Muslims go without eating, drinking and sexual activity as commanded by God in the Quran. Fasting is an important part of Ramadan. Muslims all around the world will not eat food or drink from dawn (morning) until sunset. At sunset, the family will gather the fast-breaking meal known as Iftar. The meal starts with the eating of a date just as Prophet Muhammad used to do. Then it's time for the Maghrib prayer, which is the fourth of the five daily prayers, after which the main meal is served. Muslims should start participating in the fasting ritual at the age of puberty, if they are healthy and have no illnesses. The elderly (people who are old) and the ill (sick) are not required to fast. Also exempt are pregnant women, women during the period of their menstruation, and women breast-feeding their newborns. While children are not required to participate, many children try to complete as many fasts as possible as practice for later life. Lastly, those traveling (musaafir) are exempt, but must make up the days they miss. In addition to fasting, Muslims are encouraged to read the entire Qur'an. Some Muslims perform the recitation of the entire Qur'an by means of special prayers, called Tarawih, which are held in the mosques every night of the month, during which a whole section of the Qur'an is recited. Therefore the entire Qur'an would be completed at the end of the month. Ramadan is also a time when Muslims are to focus on purity, spiritual cleansing and enlightenment. During this month people should honor God through prayer, charity, good deeds, kindness and helping others. Since it is a festival of giving and sharing, Muslims prepare special foods and buy gifts for their family and friends and for giving to the poor and needy who cannot afford it; this can involve buying new clothes, shoes, etc. There is also a social aspect involving the preparation of special foods and inviting people for Iftar. 6 Attachment 3 for Ramadan Report Thanksgiving Day: The Fourth Thursday in November In the United States, Thanksgiving is a time for tradition and sharing. People gather with family and friends on the fourth Thursday in November to enjoy a traditional meal and to give thanks for the many blessings in life. Even if family members live far away they will try to come together for a family reunion at Thanksgiving. The American Thanksgiving holiday began almost four hundred years ago. In 1620 a ship named the Mayflower, with more than one hundred people, left England and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the New World. Most of the travelers were from a religion group called the Separatists. They had separated from the Church of England because they no longer agreed with its beliefs. Separatists were not allowed to live in England, so they left for religious freedom. After the separatists left England, their ship arrived in America at an abandoned Indian village. They called their new home Plymouth. Their first years in Plymouth were very difficult. Most of the Pilgrims, as they called themselves, had come from cities in England and did not know how to live in the wilderness. They didn t know how to hunt for meat or farm. After one year in America, half of the people died from disease, hunger, and the cold winter. Thankfully, in March 1621 the Pilgrims met a group of Indians called the Wampanoag Indians. They made a deal; the Indians would help the Pilgrims find food if the Pilgrims help to protect the Indians from a rival Indian group. So, the Wampanoag Indians taught the Pilgrims how to farm, fish, dig for clams, and hunt animals. By November 1621 the Pilgrims already learned how to survive, and they were successful. They had bountiful crops of corn, beans, pumpkins, etc. To say thank-you to the Indians, the Pilgrims planned a celebration of thanks and special day of prayer. They invited the Indians who brought 90 people. There was so much food! They are turkeys, deer, fish, clams, corn bread, cranberries, and pumpkins. Today, because Thanksgiving is a day for sharing, many organizations offer free meals to the poor people, especially the homeless. Communities have food drives for needy families during the holiday.
