To this period belongs the expansion in North Africa for which Uqbah ibn-nafi was in the main responsible. In the east the complete conquest of Khurāsān was undertaken (663-71) from al-basrah, the Oxus was crossed and Bukhāra in far-away Turkestan raided (674). Thus Mu āwiyah became not only the father of a dynasty but the second founder of the Caliphate after Umar. In securing his throne and extending the limits of Islamic dominion, Mu āwiyah relied mainly upon Syrians, who were still chiefly Christians, and upon the Syro-Arabs, who were mainly Yamanites, to the exclusion of the new Moslem immigrants from al-hijāz. Arabic chronicles dwell upon the sense of loyalty which the people of Syria cherished towards their new chief. Though as a soldier he was certainly inferior to Ali, as a military organiser Mu āwiyah was second to none of his contemporaries.
